Vol 4, Issue 3, Topic: Elementary and Secondary Education Vocational Education Offerings in Rural High Schools By: Lisa Hudson and Linda Shafer This article was originally published as an Issue Brief. The sample survey data are from the NCES Fast Response Survey System (FRSS)
A great deal is known about high school vocational coursetaking, including which students take more rather than less vocational education (see Levesque et al. 2000 Tuma 1996 ). Less is known about vocational education offerings and the types of schools that provide various types of vocational education programs. To help fill this gap, this Issue Brief uses data from the 1999 "Survey on Vocational Programs in Secondary Schools" (see Phelps et al. 2001 ) to examine systems for delivering vocational education and the offerings provided by public high schools in urban, suburban, and rural areas.
The 1999 "Survey on Vocational Programs in Secondary Schools" This survey asked administrators of public high schools to classify their school as "comprehensive" or "vocational" in focus.

Before enrolling in a vocational or correspondence school, do some homework. In the washington, DC, area, call 202205-5770. For More Information
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/services/votech.htm
Search: Facts for Consumers PDF Version Choosing a Career or Vocational School Whether you're new to the job market or looking to enhance your skills, a private vocational or correspondence school can be an excellent starting point for furthering your career. These schools train students for a variety of skilled jobs, including automotive technician, medical assistant, hair stylist, interior designer, electronics technician, paralegal and truck driver. Some schools also help students identify prospective employers and apply for jobs. While many private vocational and correspondence schools are reputable and teach the skills necessary to get a good job, others may not be as trustworthy. Their main objective may be to increase profits by increasing enrollment. They do this by promising more than they can deliver. For example, they may mislead prospective students about the salary potential of certain jobs or the availability of jobs in certain fields. They also may overstate the extent of their job training programs, the qualifications of their teachers, the nature of their facilities and equipment, and their connections to certain businesses and industries.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION: APRIL 23, 1997 As part of its ongoing periodic review of its rules and guides, the Federal Trade Commission is seeking public comment about whether to amend its Guides for Private Vocational Schools to add a provision to prohibit deceptive claims about future employment or job placement success. Comments must be filed with the Commission by June 23, 1997. The Guides for Private Vocational Schools, which have been in effect since August 1972, provide guidance about acceptable or unacceptable claims in advertisements or promotional materials for resident or correspondence courses or training or instruction programs by private career or vocational schools. Specifically, the guides pertain to claims about the nature of the school, its accreditation, methods of teaching, affiliation with other agencies or institutions, and available financial assistance. In April, 1996, the FTC requested public comments about the overall costs and benefits of the guides and their regulatory and economic impact. Comments received at that time indicated broad support for retaining the Guides. Based upon those comments and its own independent assessment of the need for the Guides, the Commission has preliminarily determined to retain the Guides.

  • Born: Birthplace: Franklin County, Virginia Died: Best Known As: First head of the Tuskegee Institute
Born a slave and deprived of any early education, Booker Taliaferro Washington went on to become America's foremost black educator of the early 20th Century. He was the first principal at the Tuskegee Institute, where he championed vocational training as a means for black self-reliance. A well-known orator, Washington also wrote a best-selling autobiography and advised Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft on race relations. His rather flaccid nickname of "The Great Accommodator" provides a clue as to why he was later criticized by W. E. B. Du Bois and the N.A.A.C.P. FOUR GOOD LINKS

Nature of the Work
Working Conditions ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Booker T. Washington Booker Taliferro Washington April 5 November 15 ) was an African American educator and author . He was born into slavery at the community of Hale's Ford in Franklin County, Virginia . After he and his mother were freed, as a young man he made his way east from West Virginia to obtain schooling at Hampton in eastern Virginia at a school established to train teachers. In his later years, Dr. Washington became a leading educator and was a prominent and popular spokesperson for African American citizens of the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century. Although labeled by some activists as an "accommodator", his work cooperating with white people and enlisting the support of wealthy philanthropists helped raise funds to establish and operate dozens of small community schools and institutions of higher education for the betterment of black persons throughout the south. Within the context of the times he did much to improve the friendship and working relationship between the races.
