The Metropolitan Police Department has licensed private security officers in the D.C. public school system despite past arrests on charges of assault, cocaine possession and passing counterfeit money, according to a draft report by the D.C. inspector general.
"There are contracted security personnel working in [public schools] who may pose a risk to the secure environment of students and staff," the draft document states.
"There is no assurance that all contracted school security personnel possess the requisite skills to ensure the safety and security of ... students and faculty," according to the report, which has not yet been finalized.
The Washington Times has obtained a copy of the draft.

THE WASHINGTON TIMES
The D.C. public school system has left vacant many key positions in the 13-employee internal watchdog office that scrutinizes how it spends and manages an annual budget of more than $1 billion, financial records show.
The school system's office of compliance last year received funding for 10 auditor jobs. But pay records show that at one point the system had left nine of the auditor positions unfilled, but employed two directors and a management analyst.
John M. Cashmon, director for the compliance office, said hiring has soared since last year. As of last week, he said, only two of the office's auditor positions remained unfilled.
"It has not been a quick process," he said, citing a lag in budget approvals and personnel descriptions last year.
Although several auditors have been hired since last fall, Mr. Cashmon said, the compliance office has had trouble finding candidates to scrutinize city school system financial records.

    INTRODUCTION
Pesticides, a diverse group of toxic chemicals, are widely used in agricultural production, in factories and offices, in homes and restaurants, and in schools. Schools, with their kitchens and cafeterias, athletic fields and playgrounds, classrooms and offices, are regularly treated with a variety of pesticides. An increasing body of scientific data on the potentially harmful effects of pesticide exposure on people and the environment rightfully raises concern about the broad use of these toxic substances. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, "All pesticides are toxic to some degree. This means they can pose some risk to you, to your children and pets...." The commonplace, widespread use of pesticides is both a major environmental problem and a public health issue.

Afterschool programs at Washington School
May 2005 We are enrolled in Washington School for the fall and I am a little confused about the after school offerings. We are looking at Kids Club, Berkeley Learns/EDC, and the sports one directly but would appreciate input from anyone with direct experience in these programs. My child will be entering the fourth grade. Thanks. sharon Jan 2003 Can anyone recommend 2nd grade teachers at Washington or Thousand Oaks who are good with bright students? Our first- grader son is way beyond grade-level in reading and math. He currently goes to Washington, but we are also considering trying to transfer to Thousand Oaks which is closer to our house. Leo Hi- I am looking into Washington and Cragmont for my daughter and am interested in getting feedback from parents regarding the school community and quality of upper grade teachers. Thank you- Jackie We've been happy with our son's experience at Washington School. The principal is very energetic, as is the magnet coordinator. There's a spirit of real caring among the staff. The school's location, near downtown Berkeley, allows for wonderful enrichment activities: the kids walk to the Y for swim lessons (funded by the PTA), walk to Zellerbach for performances. My child has had excellent teachers K-3. The school's diverse population (including English learners) seems to function well together.

LAWYERS AND WARS
A Symposium in Honor of Edward R. Cummings, JD '75
“Lawyers and Wars” will explore various deeply-rooted questions that have been central to Ed Cummings's outstanding career, such as the balance of humanitarian requirements and military necessity; the definition and redefinition of lawful combatancy; the continuing efforts to maintain clear distinctions between the jus ad bellum (law on when a state may resort to war) and the jus in bello (law governing conduct after warfare begins); the desire for general rules, yet the concern over specific means and methods; and the intersection of human rights law and international humanitarian law. The symposium will take place at the Law School in Washington, D.C. on Friday, September 30, 2005, from 8:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. The aim is to bring together leading scholars and practitioners in the field who have been associated with Mr. Cummings during the course of his remarkable career. The symposium will consist of three panels, a lunch, and the 2005 Susan N. and Augustus diZerega Jr. Lecture, all of which are described below. Further, Ed will receive the University’s J. William Fulbright Award for Distinguished Public Service, which was recently awarded to another prominent law school alumnus, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid.
