Washington Youth Voice Directory INTRODUCTION According to the federal census taken in 2000, more than 25% of Washington State's residents are under 18 years old. How are young people included in decision-making across Washington's communities? In our work across the state, The Freechild Project has found young people and adults working statewide to make youth voice heard, respected, and acted on. Included here are many of the programs we've found that specifically promote youth voice. POINTS TO PONDER: While there is NO ONE "youth voice" in Washington State, or anywhere else, we use the term as a simple connection point - not as a simplistic negation of the diversity or uniqueness of different young peoples' voice. Do you find this true? RESOURCES: The following are programs and opportunities in Washington state where young people can become actively engaged in their communities. Each has its own attributes and challenges, and offers young people varying amounts of support and authenticity. These organizations are listed in NO PARTICULAR ORDER. For more information on any of these programs, go to their website or contact them directly.

Topics: war/peace Gamers line up for their turn to practice shooting people in the America's Army booth at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo. Years of writing about public relations and propaganda has probably made me a bit jaded, but I was amazed nevertheless when I visited America's Army , an online video game website sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). In its quest to find recruits , the military has literally turned war into entertainment America's Army " offers a range of games that kids can download or play online. Although the games are violent, with plenty of opportunities to shoot and blow things up, they avoid graphic images of death or other ugliness of war, offering instead a sanitized, Tom Clancy version of fantasy combat. One game, Overmatch , promises "a contest in which one opponent is distinctly superior ... with specialized skills and superior technology ... OVERMATCH: few soldiers, certain victory" (more or less the same overconfident message that helped lead us into Iraq).

Three Organizations Prepare for Next Disaster
As disaster relief and human service organizations begin to transition from providing immediate emergency services to attending to the longer-term needs of Hurricane Katrina victims in the devastated areas and across the country, the Red Cross, The Salvation Army and United Way of America join together to ensure victims receive the kind of services each organization provides to those in need. American Red Cross
The role of the Red Cross is to build a bridge of assistance by providing food, shelter, counseling, financial assistance and other emergency needs for victims of disaster until they can access more permanent aid provided by local, state and federal agencies. After the emergency period ends, the Red Cross assists by coordinating services with other agencies such as The Salvation Army and United Way to help families affected by disasters. The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army has an extensive disaster response and recovery infrastructure able to meet the short-term and long-term needs of disaster survivors. Through its partnerships with other faith-based and non-faith based organizations, and its long-term working relationships with federal, state and local governments, the Army is prepared to provide food, clothing and shelter in the aftermath of storms, and then utilize its network of nearly 1,300 major centers of operation, and the collective efforts of nearly 50,000 officers and employees across the United States to assist survivors with long-term recovery needs that include counseling, pastoral and medical care, child care, senior citizen care and financial assistance.

There is a rather cryptic article in tomorrow's New York Times about Jack Abramoff's first brush with the Advertisement law back in 2002 and how he got unbrushed This is the case in late 2002, when the Acting US Attorney in Guam opened a criminal probe into Jack Abramoff's lobbying activities in the US Pacific island protectorate. Yet days after federal prosecutor Frederick A. Black notified the Justice Department's Public Integrity section of his inquiry into Abramoff, he was demoted. And his new bosses barred him from pursuing any other public corruption cases. That brought the entire Abramoff investigation to halt. Administration officials argue there was nothing out of the ordinary with an acting US Attorney being replaced by a permanent apppointee. But Black had been the 'Acting' US Attorney in Guam for
