500 Washington Street Map and Written Directions When did the library open in its home away from home? Monday, January 3rd, Y2K Where do I return my books? Outdoor book returns are installed at the library door and in the parking lot.
Why did the library move?
The need for barrier free access is something that will touch us all at some point in our lives. Handicapping conditions are, at the very least, temporary. At worst, they can render us unable to earn an income or enjoy the pleasure of a good book. The Chelsea District Library commits to this community that all library district residents, with or without handicapping conditions, will be able to use public library and information resources. The Library Board and the School Board have engaged in a collaborative effort to maximize the use of the public facilities of Chelsea. Together, these two public boards are providing barrier free public library services for the first time to the Chelsea community by putting public school facilities back into use until they are reclaimed in three years for expanded classroom needs.

Wake County Public Libraries
The Wake County Public Libraries' Online Catalog has many useful features. Did you know you can look up a book and find out whether your branch of the library has it on the shelf? If you have a public library card and a PIN (a four digit secret number you use like a password), you can even request a book from any branch and it will be delivered to the circulation desk of the branch you prefer and held for you to pick up. They'll even call you when it is ready for you! If you have a public library card, but no PIN, just carry your library card to your favorite branch and ask them for a PIN. They will let you choose a number you can easily remember.

We hope that our materials will enlighten, inform, entertain, and encourage lifelong reading habits! Our staff is ready to assist parents, teachers, and students! We want media to be a positive, exciting experience! Audio Cassette Kits Internet Books Media Center Hours ... CD-ROM's - Kindergarten students may check out 1 book. After Christmas break, kindergarten students may check out 2 books. One book will be an Everybody book, and one book will be from the Easy Read section of the library. Kindergarten students will also receive a drawstring bag. They will place their Easy Reader in this bag so that it doesn't get lost. Students in 1st grade through 3rd grade may check out two titles at a time. One of these books may go home, and the other book must remain at school. Students in 4th grade and 5th grade may check out 2 books; however, more books may be checked out if needed for research. Books and materials are arranged in several areas within our media center: Audio Cassette Kits (These kits are only found at the Lincoln Media Center.) We have many book/tape kits that Lincoln students may check out. Read along tapes are a great way for our emergent readers to learn to read.

The Relationships Among Achievement, Low Income, and Ethnicity Across Six Groups of Washington State Students Executive Summary We are pleased to provide this technical report on the relationships among student achievement, income, and ethnicity as the first publication for Washington educators by the Washington School Research Center. The questions addressed by these analyses are important considerations for all of us concerned with improving education in the state of Washington. Media reports that highlight the different achievement levels of various ethnic groups of children are common. These differences are a source of great concern among community groups, and rightfully so. Yet, those of us who work with data and statistics on a regular basis are acutely aware of the dangers inherent in reporting group achievement results that consider only one characteristic for creating those groups. Factors affecting student achievement are varied and complex, and failure to consider multiple factors may lead to erroneous or simplistic answers to very complicated questions. In this report, professors Abbott and Joireman address the question of differences in school level achievement depending on the ethnic composition of the student population, so often reported in the media, while at the same time considering the income levels of the students' families. They begin this effort with a brief review of research conducted elsewhere on this topic, and conclude that previous research has shown that "income is generally a better predictor of student achievement than ethnicity."

Whole Language in an Elementary School Library Media Center. ERIC Digest.
The change from a basic skills to a whole language approach precipitates vast changes in the school library media center. This digest will examine these changes, specifically at the elementary school level, in terms of three curricular foci: theme studies, process writing, and literature-based reading. It will also discuss the new demands placed upon the collection and the school librarian.
THEME STUDIES
Theme studies are not unlike the units of study many teachers have taught for years. The main difference is that theme studies rely upon children's literature instead of textbooks. Children explore a topic in far more detail and spend much longer on each theme than in a textbook-driven program. Children engaged in a theme study use the school media center to seek information about specific topics. They also use works of various genres to supplement their research. Fiction, for example, demonstrates attitudes and behaviors, the reasons to use the information found in nonfiction books. Poetry can provide an aesthetic dimension to the theme study topic. Thematic studies require large numbers of trade books, which the children use with the teachers to build the content of their instructional program. Librarians must work cooperatively with teachers to assure that resources are available in the media center when needed. At certain times of the year, pulling books can be a full-time job for the media specialist.
