The Washington Times April 11, 2005 by J. Michael Smith HSLDA President Home-schoolers finally have broken through in the military after a long effort. In a 2005 memorandum from the Department of Defense, home-schoolers were "afforded priority enlistment such that no practical limit shall apply." It was not always this way. Ever since home-schooling's re-emergence in the late 1970s, home-school graduates have had a difficult time navigating the bureaucracy of the U.S. military. The military has three tiers whereby recruits are admitted. New recruits with nontraditional high school diplomas are placed in Tier II, which was designed for people who are thought to possess fewer skills and abilities. Starting a military career in Tier II rather than Tier I disqualifies recruits from making significant upward progression. Because of this policy, home-school graduates effectively were excluded from fully serving their country. This situation underwent a temporary change in October 1998, when Congress started a five-year pilot program to give home-schoolers fair access to the armed services. The program was scheduled to expire in September 2003 but was extended for one year. Unfortunately, the military allowed the pilot program to expire in October 2004. Home-school families turned to Home School Legal Defense Association for assistance.

Looking up the Hudson, West Point
Taking the Long View, 1851-1991
On March 16 , 1802, Congress approved legislation establishing the United States Military Academy at West Point , one of the oldest military service academies in the world. Strategically located on the west bank of the Hudson River 50 miles north of New York City, West Point has been continuously occupied by U.S. troops since January 20, 1778. George Washington established his headquarters there in 1779. In 1780, Benedict Arnold , then in command of the post, tried unsuccessfully to betray it to the British.

Colonel Sylvanus Thayer, superintendent at West Point from 1817 to 1833 is credited with instituting the high standards of discipline and scholarship for which the Academy is known today. Under Thayer's tenure, cadets were trained as civil engineers as well as soldiers. After graduation from West Point, commissioned officers put their technical skills to work for the U.S. government in construction of canals, roads, railroads, and other internal improvements needed to facilitate westward expansion. West Point Museum — The museum is behind the Visitors Center and is open daily from 10:30 AM - 4:15 PM. It contains one of oldest and largest diversified public collections of military artifacts in the Western Hemisphere. The museum is one of the departments of the United States Military Academy and supports cadet academic, military and cultural instruction. Its collections cover all of US military history including many exhibits and displays from the American Revolution. The collection actually began with material brought here after the British defeat at Saratoga in 1777, twenty-five years before the founding of the military academy in 1802. The first floor contains the “West Point” Gallery” and the “History of Warfare” Gallery. The “West Point” Gallery begins with the garrisoning of West Point during the Revolutionary War and chronicles the history of West Point and the academy. Exhibited artifacts include the sword of Polish patriot Thaddeus Kosciuszko, who engineered many of West Point’s early fortifications.

http://www.gly.uga.edu/railsback/BS-WP.html
Gneiss at West Point Many of the builings and retaining walls at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, are made of gneiss. Washington Hall at the United States Military Academy is built of gneiss (see below), a metamorphic rock typically resulting from intense metamorphism, often during mountain-building events. Metamorphic rocks form a belt of outcrop in the Appalachians from the Piedmond of the southeast to New England, and West Point sits at one of the narrowest segments of that metamorphic belt. The Appalachians have along history of metamorphism and deformation, with the most recent event about 300 million years ago. Today gneisses like that below provide the building stone for Washington Hall, which is shown above, with the Chapel behind it and up the hill. West Point also sits where the Hudson River cuts through the Appalachian metamorphic belt, so that the uplands of erosion-resistant metamorphic rocks provide commanding views of a key waterway connecting the American interior with the Atlantic coast (see map below). That's why West Point was a key fortress in the American Revolution, and why Benedict Arnold's plan to turn the fortress over to the British in 1780 would have dealt a serious blow to American military strategy. After the revolution, the fortress on the metamorphic heights over the Hudson became the military academy for which West Point is famous today. Back to the Index for these pages

Students, parents decry ‘propaganda,’ while school officials see a distraction. When student Mariah Ahern learned that military recruiters were landing a Blackhawk helicopter at Bainbridge High School Thursday, she went into battle mode. "It’s war propaganda," said the BHS freshman, who learned that Blackhawk helicopter tours were to be part of Career Fest while reading the school district bulletin. "I was a little bit horrified." Ahern asked her mom Karen, a seasoned peace activist, for help getting the helicopter visit stopped. Protest signs were made and hundreds of emails went out to parents, students, pacifists and religious groups, sounding the alarm. Within 12 hours, school officials had grounded the Blackhawk visit.

West Point, NY 10996-2099
Perhaps one of the most famous tourist attractions in the world, the United States Military Academy at West Point has much to offer in the way of history and culture. It is the nation's oldest service academy and has operated since 1802 at the site of the nation's oldest military post in continuous operation. During the Revolutionary War, West Point was the site of a permanent garrison of Washington's troops. Here a massive iron chain was thrown across the sharply angled Hudson River to Constitution Island , preventing the British from using this all important waterway. The history here would fill a book and no doubt has filled several. Visitors begin in the Visitors Center where they will see interesting displays and movies covering a cadet's stay at the Academy. Then on to the Museum. The Museum holds a diversified collection of 16th through 20th century arms, uniforms, flags, military art, and West point memorabilia, as well as trophies of wars since the Revolution. More than 2,000 artifacts document military activities from ancient Egypt through Desert Storm. Military buffs will spend hours in here alone. This is an impressive collection! A Self-Guided or Guided Tour of the grounds will reveal a great number of historical and educational sites, including the famous Cadet Chapel, Fort Clinton, Fort Putnam, and monuments to Patton, Kosciuszko, Thayer, MacArthur, Washington, and other important figures. The grounds are beautiful and the vistas of the Hudson are breathtaking.
