David R. Graham
Homeschoolers and the United States Military Academy are a perfect fit . Let me tell you about it. First of all, numerous Army families stationed at West Point homeschool their own children. See also this . Many Graduates of the United States Military Academy homeschool their children. Secondly, Mary and I are long-time Washington State homeschooling parents. We participated and contributed locally and nationally through the development and expansion stages of the movement. One of our homeschooled children is a Mountaineer and Diesel Technician and two are Cadets at the United States Military Academy (USMA, also known as West Point). One of our homeschooled children graduated at USMA 2 June 2001 as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry, United States Army. He will be stationed at Fort Lewis after Officer Basic, Airborne and Ranger Schools. He wears Air Assault, German Combat Infantry and Special Forces Combat Diver Badges and has leadership training as a Cadet Officer in the United States Corps of Cadets and as an Acting-Second Lieutenant in a Military Intelligence unit. Another of our homeschooled children is now (Fall 2001) in her second year as a member of the United States Corps of Cadets.

Public Military Academy Brings Clash of Cultures
NANCY TREJOS / Washington Post 22dec02
For Pr. George's Teens, New Marching Orders Troubled High School's Transformation Into Public Military Academy Brings Clash of Cultures Christopher Woody insists that Forestville Military Academy hasn't done him any good, that he shouldn't have to put up with teachers who scream at him like he's a soldier, that his mother's raising him just fine without the Army's help. He has spent the past four months the entire first quarter of ninth grade fighting change with the fierce determination that the school wants him to apply to his conduct and his studies. But whether he will ever credit Forestville, the Christopher who first roamed its halls in August wearing baggy jeans and shoulder-length cornrows is not the same 14-year-old who today knows how to march, dresses for school in a uniform and responds to teachers in Army speak, barking "hooah" and "yes, sir." Christopher is part of an experiment in public education, an attempt to impose military discipline onto a struggling campus that was known as Forestville High School until this year. A growing number of U.S. school systems, including those in Chicago and Oakland, have turned to the military to play a larger role in teaching teenagers in the hope that rigid structure and a no-nonsense approach can lead to academic success. "I was getting desperate," Christopher's mother, Linda Woody, said of her decision to send him to the academy. "I felt like, I know this child is bright, I know he's creative. He's not dull. We can expect more from him."

On January 24th, 1862, the Territorial Legislature of Washington specified that one of the University of Washington's four original institutional departments would be dedicated to the study of military science. Although the creation of a Military Department was mandated at the opening of the Civil War, it was not until the late 1870s that plans were developed. Finally, in 1882, the University President established a Military Department and in 1884, an active program was in place. The Kinnear Husky Battalion takes it name from Cadet Captain C.A. Kinnear. Cadet Captain Kinnear led a group of University of Washington cadets during an operation to assist the Seattle authorities in quelling the City Riots of 1886. For their assistance to local authorities, General John Gibbon presented the Battalion with a silk 38-star American flag. This flag is still on display on the ground floor of Clark Hall, outside the Military Science Department's offices.

Washington's military intervention deepens -
in the Philippines
by Eduardo R.C. Capulong
International Socialist Review, May-June 2003
The Philippines and the United States resumed joint combat operations in mid-April, renewing their ~ "Balikatan 03-1" (shoulder-to-shoulder) offensive against Muslim rebels in the southern region of Mindanao. Unlike last year's "exercises," which were confined-at least formally'-to Mindanao and lasted six months (see ISR 22, March-April 2002), U.S. and Philippine officials now say that Balikatan 03-1 will be open-ended. Operations will include points north, and target not only the kidnap-for-ransom group Abu Sayyaf, but also the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Maoist New People's Army (NPA).
Balikatan 03-1 will encompass "many places," said President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, among them the southern Sulu and Mindanao islands, middle Visayas region, and northern provinces of Cavite, Quezon, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac and Pampanga. Backed by $100 million in U.S. military aid, it will involve as many as 2,000 U.S. soldiers and thousands of Filipino troops.
The resumption of joint operations comes amid a sharp escalation of hostilities between government and rebel forces, particularly in the south. Already reeling from decades of war, the Philippine military staged another major offensive in February in Mindanao against the MILF. Torpedoing peace negotiations that were underway, government forces attacked MILF bases in the resource-rich Liguasan Marsh. Thus far, the operations have killed more than 200 and displaced 200,000 people.

Restoration of Historic African-American Armory
Wins National Preservation Honor Award (Washington, D.C., October 18, 2000) - The Chicago neighborhood of Bronzeville could have been just another story of urban blight and decline. But this African-American district chose hope over apathy and rallied around its most cherished landmark, the crumbling Eighth Regiment Armory.
The Armory Before Restoration The 1914 building, headquarters for the African-American "Fighting Eighth," which fought in the 1916 border conflicts with Mexico, was the first U.S. Armory built for a regiment trained and commanded entirely by African Americans. After being decommissioned in the 1950s and standing vacant for almost 50 years, it has been transformed into a public military academy and an anchor for the district's rebirth. Today the academy houses an 800-seat auditorium, a drill hall, gun range, 20 classrooms, two libraries, and the nation's first museum of African-American military achievement. The school is the first military academy in Chicago's public school system. The National Trust today announced it will recognize the project with a 2000 National Preservation Honor Award. National Trust President Richard Moe will present the award on Thursday, Nov. 2, during the National Trust's National Preservation Conference in Los Angeles.

The Establishment of the United States Military Academy
When George Washington first proposed the establishment of an American military academy in 1783, critics viewed such a facility as a breeding ground for a military aristocracy that would eventually undermine the young American democracy. However, within twenty years after Washington’s first proposal, the United States Military Academy at West Point officially opened on March 16, 1802. Over the course of West Point's 202 year history, some of the greatest tactical and strategic minds have walked its halls. Distinguished and brilliant individuals such as Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, "Stonewall" Jackson, Dennis Hart Mahan, Douglas MacArthur, John Pershing, and George S. Patton refined their knowledge of the art of war within the walls of West Point - and left an indelible mark on the course of military history.

High on the side of Rocky Butte, lies Hill Military Academy, occupying 150 acres of wooded hill-side. From its Campus a gorgeous view of the Columbia River valley, far below, unfolds its beauty; Oregon's three great Mountain Peaks, Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, and Mt. Crowning the Butte is the Joseph Wood Hill Memorial Park, honoring Dr. J. W. "This school was later moved to Milwaukie, then to Oswego and finally to Portland, in 1870, and its name changed to Bishop Scott Grammar and Divinity School in honor of the first Episcopal Bishop of Oregon Territory, and was under the direction of the Right Reverend B. Government-financed chaplains have been a long-standing fixture in the U.S. armed forces, despite the arguments of those who claim the practice amounts to unconstitutional government support of religion. This enduring relationship faces a new challenge as a result of support for the pro-life movement among military chaplains. At the center of the controversy are new military guidelines instructing chaplains to "actively avoid" political advocacy. The guidelines were issued in June after Roman Catholic chaplains urged parishioners to participate in the national "Project Life Postcard Campaign," which was cosponsored by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. In the campaign, Catholics were encouraged to write postcards to their members of Congress expressing support for a legislative ban on the late-term partial-birth abortion procedure. President Clinton ultimately vetoed the ban (CT, Nov. 11, 1996, p. 94). LOBBYING BAN INVOKED: Military officials determined that the Catholic postcard campaign violated laws prohibiting government employees from lobbying for legislation.
