American Indians of the Pacific Northwest Building the Digital Collection The University of Washington Libraries received an award in the 1997/98 round of the Library of Congress / Ameritech National Digital Library Competition to support the digitization of this collection of text and photographs. The university led a consortium that also included the in Spokane, and the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle. As encouraged by the guidelines, the image files and most of the web pages describing the source collection and the project are mounted and maintained at the University of Washington as one of its Image Collections Descriptive records were delivered to the Library of Congress for indexing as part of American Memory. For more detail on different aspects of building this digital collection, follow the links below. Links marked are to pages mounted at the University of Washington.
  • Digitizing the Collection
The digital images of the heterogeneous pictorial and textual material in this collection were captured using a variety of scanners. Most items were scanned directly from originals, but photographic intermediates were sometimes used. The textual materials have not been transcribed or converted, but are presented through a page-turning interface. This interface is one component of the CONTENT system used by the University of Washington Libraries to manage the collection and deliver a local presentation of the collection. The CONTENT Software Suite is developed and supported by the Center for Information Systems Optimization in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington. For a fuller discussion of the creation of these digital reproductions, including details of scanning equipment and image formats, see

Library Staff Development Programs:

Staff Development and Training Budget
The largest percentage of the staff development and training budget is spent to pay registration fees for individual employees (librarians, classified and professional staff) to attend campus, local and regional continuing education events. Each biennium, between $25,000 and $29,000 is spent on this program with more than 150 different individuals applying for funding and time off. The approximate cost of each grant is $100. Some employees apply for several. These are not travel funds, which are handled directly through Libraries administration. The employee fills out a simple application form for time off and funding and gets appropriate approval and signatures. The money is used in a variety of ways, such as:
  • Taking a class from the Univ. of Washington Training and Development catalog Pursuing a certificate program through Univ. of Washington Training and Development. Certificates are offered in written/oral communication; fiscal management; human resources management; and, supervisory skills.

Student Employees Recognition and Scholarship Program
Each May the Libraries sponsors a Library Student Employee Appreciation Week and awards scholarships to student employees. Libraries Staff Development and Libraries Development coordinate the program. During the appreciation week, each unit is sent posters based on the theme (2001 theme: "We Can Count on You!") and urged to recognize their student employees during the week. A half-page ad is taken out in the campus student newspaper to publicly thank our 500+ student employees. Students who have worked in a library (main campus and/or branch campuses) for at least one full quarter are eligible to apply for scholarships that are funded through the efforts of the Libraries Development Office. In 2001, 10 scholarships of $500 each were awarded. Students must:
  • fill out an application
answer an essay question (What are the most important, interesting and surprising things you have learned while working at the University of Washington Libraries?)

University of Washington Libraries International Inter-Library Loan
The University of Washington Libraries in Seattle have strong holdings in indological subjects, so it is of special interest that they have a policy for loaning materials from their circulating collections to libraries even outside America. The message below, from Irene Joshi, gives details. The UW libraries catalogue is also available here through the INDOLOGY web page. Message-Id: Date: Fri, 6 Oct 1995 20:52:44 BST Reply-To: indology@liverpool.ac.uk From: Irene Joshi To: Members of the list Subject: Overseas loans This is in response to a query by Allen Thrasher regarding US libraries loaning overseas. The University of Washington Libraries, Seattle which owns an important collection of South Asian materials does, through its Resource Sharing Program, loan material from its circulating collections to libraries overseas. In addition to the usual fees, all material is shipped airmail which adds to the costs. Our catalog is available through the South Asia Gopher columbianet.columbia.edu (Clioplus etc.) For further information on loans please contact Resource Sharing 206-685-8049 or librss@u.washington.edu

Virtual Museum Project Explores Cultures of the Northwest Olympic Peninsula
The Institute of Museum and Library Services is a primary source of federal support for the Nation's libraries and museums. Many grants promote preservation of native cultures, international education and exchange. The Community Museum project at the University of Washington featured here is one example. A list of selected examples is also available.

With the expansion of computer technology and digital communication to some of the most remote corners of the earth, there is growing concern that the cultures, languages, and lifestyles of the world minority populations-especially indigenous peoples-are seriously threatened. Through its grant programs, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) promotes awareness, appreciation, and preservation of the diverse cultures found in the states and territories of the United States. In fact, many IMLS programs use the very technologies that appear to threaten the continuation of diverse cultures as a means to ensure their preservation. One such program is the Community Museum Project, www.communitymuseum.org
