A speech delivered at the Meydenbauer Center, Bellevue
Saturday, June 19, 1999 Note: Another version of this speech appeared in the Aug. 29, 1999 issue of the Seattle Times. It's an honor to be here among so many people who have devoted their lives to the demanding work of educational reform. I'd like to start by acknowledging the tremendous achievement of John Goodlad in putting this conference together. John is of course a faculty member of our College of Education, so ably led by Dean Allen Glenn, at the University of Washington, as well as being one of the foremost thinkers and writers about educational issues for many years. I want to talk to you today about why institutions of higher education-and particularly public research universities-have a responsibility to K-12 education. Then I want to describe some ways in which we are currently trying to fulfil that responsibility at my own institution, the University of Washington. I begin with a simple premise. If there ever really was a time when higher education held itself apart from the broader educational system-aloof and elite-that time has passed. For several reasons, we no longer have the luxury of just minding our own educational business.

With the end of the cold war, the role of the research university has changed. In this speech, President McCormick argues that institutions of higher education should establish a "new social compact" with the public by working to solve society's most pressing needs. Foremost among these needs is the health of America's K-12 educational system. President McCormick delivered this speech at the Maydenbauer Center in Bellevue, Washington on Saturday, July 19, 1999. Another version of this statement was published in the August 29, 2000 edition of the Seattle Times The University of Washington's Partnerships
