Pray for the President as he turns his attention to the appointment of a second Supreme Court Justice, asking God for wisdom and help in the process. As President Bush has now begun to consult with several senators, pray for wisdom as they meet, asking God to clearly guide in this vital decision. Pray for President Bush as he welcomes to the White House King Abdullah of Jordan on September 22 to discuss with the King his initiative in promoting moderate Islam, reform in Jordan and other regional issues. Pray for President Bush and members of his team as on September 22 and 23 he visits people in Houston and other cities with large numbers of hurricane Katrina evacuees, praying that his support and presence will bring great encouragement and comfort to workers, evacuees and government officials, and that contacts made will result in many more people being helped. Pray for Frances Fragos Townsend, newly appointed by President Bush to investigate the problems surrounding federal response to Hurricane Katrina, as she now begins the process of looking in to this important matter. Ask God to bring to light everything pertinent, guiding her and those she selects to find key answers that will help our nation respond appropriately in the future.

Fifty-five years ago, the representatives of 12 nations gathered here in Washington to sign the North Atlantic Treaty, which established the most successful military alliance in history. Today, we proudly welcome Bulgaria Estonia Latvia Lithuania Romania Slovakia and Slovenia. We welcome them into the ranks of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. When NATO was founded, the people of these seven nations were captives to an empire. They endured bitter tyranny, they struggled for independence, they earned their freedom through courage and perseverance. And today they stand with us as full and equal partners in this great alliance. It has been my honor to host the Prime Ministers of each new NATO member in the Oval Office. I want to thank them for their friendship; I want to thank them for their leadership. I look forward to working with them to make the world more peaceful and more free. Welcome to America.

Commander of the American forces during the American Revolution American Revolution was chosen commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. After many setbacks, he accepted the surrender of British general Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781. After the war Washington retired to his Virginia estate, Mount Vernon, but in 1787 he re-entered politics as president of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, and was elected US president in 1789. He attempted to draw his ministers from all factions, but his aristocratic outlook and acceptance of the fiscal policy championed by Alexander Hamilton alienated his secretary of state, Thomas Jefferson, who resigned in 1793, thus creating the two-party system.

Washington's Farewell Address The Senate tradition began on February 22, 1862, as a morale-boosting gesture during the darkest days of the Civil War. Citizens of Philadelphia had petitioned Congress to commemorate the forthcoming 130th anniversary of Washington's birth by reading the Address at a joint meeting of both houses. Tennessee Senator Andrew Johnson introduced the petition in the Senate. "In view of the perilous condition of the country," he said, "I think the time has arrived when we should recur back to the days, the times, and the doings of Washington and the patriots of the Revolution, who founded the government under which we live." Two by two, members of the Senate proceeded to the House chamber for a joint session. As they moved through Statuary Hall, they passed a display of recently captured Confederate battle flags. President Abraham Lincoln, whose son Willie had died two days earlier, did not attend. But members of his cabinet, the Supreme Court, and high-ranking military officers in full uniform packed the chamber to hear Secretary of the Senate John W. Forney read the Address. Every year since 1896, the Senate has observed Washington's Birthday by selecting one of its members, alternating parties, to read the 7,641-word statement in legislative session. Delivery generally takes about forty-five minutes. In 1985, Florida Senator Paula Hawkins tore through the text in a record-setting thirty-nine minutes, while in 1962, West Virginia Senator Jennings Randolph, savoring each word, consumed sixty-eight minutes.

After his father died when George was eleven, George's mother, Mary, a tough and driven woman, struggled to hold their home together with the help of her two sons from a previous marriage. Although he never received more than an elementary school education, young George displayed a gift for mathematics. This knack for numbers combined with his quiet confidence and ambition caught the attention of Lord Fairfax, head of one of the most powerful families in Virginia. While working for Lord Fairfax as a surveyor at the age of sixteen, the young Washington traveled deep into the American wilderness for weeks at a time.
