About Us In January 1888, 33 people came together in Washington, D.C. They were a disparate group that included a teacher, lawyer, topographer, banker, military officer, and naturalist.
They all had one quality in common: curiosity about the world and everything in it. They organized the National Geographic Society and stated its purpose: the increase and diffusion of geographic knowledge.
For more than 116 years the National Geographic Society has supported and chronicled the achievements of some of the world's most accomplished explorers. In 1996 the Society organized its grantmaking, scientific, and educational programs under one banner, Mission Programs.
Mission Programs undertakes expeditions and scientific investigations; encourages geography education for young people; promotes natural, historical, and cultural conservation; and inspires the public through vibrant exhibits and live events.
