George Washington
Presidents of the USA Washington Timeline Washington Timeline Quiz/Printout Answers ... Answers John Adams , first Vice-President of the USA George Washington, first President of the USA George Washington (1732-1799) was the first President of the United States of America. He served as President from April 30, 1789, until March 4, 1797 (two terms). His Vice-President was John Adams (1735-1826), who was later voted the second President of the USA. Early Life: George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia . Washington's father died when George was 11 years old. He had very little formal schooling, but taught himself to be an expert woodsman, surveyor (a person who determines the boundaries and area of tracts of land), and mapmaker. Washington grew to be over 6 feet tall this was very rare in Colonial times. French and Indian War: As a young man, Washington joined the Virginia militia. He and six men traveled 500 miles north to the shores of Lake Erie to deliver a message to the French the French were ordered to stop settling land that was claimed by the British. This land dispute led to a battle in which Washington and 160 men lost to the French; this was the beginning of the French and Indian War (the British and the Colonists fought the French and some Indian tribes). After many heroic battles, Washington became a colonel and the leader of Virginia's militia. The British eventually won the French and Indian War.

    Geography
The state comprises three major geographic zones. In the east, most of interior Washington is made up of the Columbia Plateau and the valleys of the Columbia River and its tributaries. Central Washington is dominated, and the state is divided, by the north-south Cascade Range. To the west of the Cascades lie coastal lowlands in the Puget Trough, Puget Sound and its many arms, and to their west the Coast Ranges, which in part form the backbone of the Olympic Peninsula.
    The Interior
Washington's interior is a region of hard volcanic substructure, in many places scoured by glacial and river action, that is left largely dry by the shield the Cascades form against the Pacific winds; in some areas, as in the southeastern Palouse hills, loess deposits provide a basis for irrigated agriculture. The Blue Mts., an offshoot of the Rockies in the state's southeast corner, are one of the interior's few forested sections. The Columbia River enters the state from British Columbia in the northeast. After receiving the Spokane River from the east, it turns westward across the state and swings south at the foot of the Cascades, enclosing the Big Bend country. Near Washington's southern border, it receives the Yakima (from the west) and Snake (from the east), then bends westward again, forming the boundary with Oregon as it cuts through the Cascades on its way to the sea.

Western Washington is characterized by a mild marine climate, while the eastern part of the state is high-desert country. Despite the claim in Sleepless in Seattle , it really does not rain nine months a year in Puget Sound country. While the average total rainfall is 36 inches, most of the rain falls between October and April, heavy rainfall is rare, and the sun really does shine frequently. Average temperatures range from highs of 75 degrees (23.9 c) in mid-summer to lows of 26 degrees (-3.3 c) in January. East of the Cascades, irrigation transforms the desert landscape, making it home to the state's major agricultural region. Average temperatures in eastern Washington range from summer highs of 89 degrees (31.6 c) to winter lows of 19 degrees (-7.2 c), and the average annual precipitation is only 18 inches (46.2 cm).

The city is the center of a metropolitan area (1990 pop. 3,923,574) extending into Maryland and Virginia. With the city of Baltimore to its north in Maryland, it forms a consolidated metropolitan area of some 6.7 million people. Washington is the legislative, administrative, and judicial center of the United States but has little industry; its business is government, and hundreds of thousands are so employed in the metropolitan area. The city is also a major tourist attraction and a cultural center. Washington has long been a gateway for African Americans emigrating from the South, and since the 1960s has had a (now diminishing) black majority. Many citizens live in poverty, and social problems have been exacerbated by the transient nature of the governmental workforce and the District's lack of political power.

The Geography of Gay Marriage

Sunday, May 23, 2004; Page B03 The bells have rung for gay marriage, at least in Massachusetts, which last Monday became the first state in the union to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The Bay State victory, however, is only one round in the drive for nationwide acceptance of same-sex marriage. Even gay rights advocates concede they still face countless hurdles including public opinion, which remains overall decisively opposed to the notion of marriage between two men or two women. Results of a poll released last week by the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg National Election Survey show that a large majority of Americans do not want their home states to ratify laws allowing gay men or lesbians to wed. Call the couplings civil unions instead of marriage, though, and enough people say yes to create a slim majority for the idea of some form of legal recognition for gay couples. And more Americans oppose amending the Constitution to outlaw gay marriage than support that approach. Will these views reverberate in the political arena? President Bush is on record as supporting a constitutional amendment preventing gay marriage. Sen. John F. Kerry, meanwhile, says he's opposed to an amendment, but favors civil unions over same-sex marriage. So is each man playing to his constituency, or can one claim an advantage on the issue? Outlook asked the Annenberg pollsters to break the survey numbers down by states to see where opinions fall in the much-talked-about "cultural divide."
