University rebukes employee for e-mail decrying lesbianism
By Joyce Howard Price
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
July 31, 2005
A state university in New Jersey has reprimanded a student-employee for describing homosexuality as a "perversion" in a private e-mail that he sent a female professor, after she sent him an unsolicited announcement about a university event that promoted lesbian relationships.
The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), a nonprofit group based in Philadelphia that is assisting Mr. Daniel in his fight with the university, calls the action taken against him "absurd" and an infringement of his free-speech rights.
Mr. Daniel received an e-mail from Miss Scala on March 7 advertising an upcoming viewing and discussion of the film "Ruthie and Connie: Every Room in the House." The e-mail referred to the film as a "lesbian relationship story."
"These are perversions," Mr. Daniel wrote. "The absence of God in higher education brings on confusion. That is why in these classes the creator of the heavens and the universe is never mentioned."

With a population of 1.5 million active duty military members, each day around the globe, there are an estimated 540,000 active duty sponsors each caring for a family member with special medical or educational needs. STOMP is the only National Parent Training and Information Center for military families providing support and advice to military parents without regard of the type of medical condition their child has. Parents of children with special needs face many challenges:
  • Feelings of isolation and anxiety. Difficulty navigating disjointed services. Severe financial worries. Inadequate information.
These challenges are compounded when the family concerned is military. While all military families face certain challenges such as frequent PCS moves/military member being placed in harm's way/deployments, our families with special needs family members face additional difficulties, for example:
  • Continuity in provision of IEP services from state to state or from state to DODDS/DDESS (no legal obligation to implement current IEP from another state) Availability of military member during IEP meetings/ medical treatments/procedures Finding specialists/physicians who will take TRICARE (military health entitlement program) Re-establishing relationships with key medical and educational personnel Re-establishing eligibility for community resources to assist child and facing waiting lists for services needed

85. Prevention Institute: Nutrition Policy Profiles: Nutrition Labeling Regulations
Strengthen regulations for nutrition and ingredient labeling for all packaged food. In 1990, the US Congress passed the Nutrition Labeling and education Act
http://www.preventioninstitute.org/print/CHI_labeling.html
www.preventioninstitute.org NUTRITION POLICY PROFILES:
NUTRITION LABELING REGULATIONS
Also available as PDF This paper is part of a series of nutrition policy profiles prepared by Prevention Institute for the Center for Health Improvement (CHI). Background Nutrition ranks second after taste as the factor most frequently influencing food purchases. To assist people in identifying and comparing foods' nutritional value, nutrition labels provide information about the ingredients and nutrient content of packaged and processed foods. Thousands of new processed food products reach supermarket shelves each year. Unlike whole foods such as fruits and vegetables, it is virtually impossible to know what is in each product without label information. Before the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990, food manufacturers were not required to provide nutrition information unless their product was nutritionally fortified or carried a nutrition claim, and nutrition claims were not carefully regulated. The visibility of health claims on food labels increased through the 1980s and 1990s as manufacturers recognized their potential to increase sales among health-conscious consumers. Unfortunately, this practice led to misleading or exaggerated claims on labels. For example, the terms "lite/light" were used by manufacturers to describe foods that were lighter in color, as opposed to lower in fat or cholesterol.

Recommendations for Improving the Washington DC Water and Sewer Authority Lead in Drinking Water Public Education Program
April 30, 2004 I. Introduction
Public information regarding the quality and safety of customer drinking water is a critical component to building consumer confidence and trust. By providing customers with relevant information about the safety of their drinking water, EPA and water systems empower citizens to make informed choices and to take precautionary measures to protect against health threats. Unlike most regulated contaminants, concentrations of lead are not typically high when drinking water leaves the treatment plant. Lead levels can vary at the tap from consumer to consumer and can come from sources including lead service lines, plumbing fixtures or lead solder used with copper pipes within homes. Therefore, the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) contains special public education requirements for informing the public when lead levels are high, and for providing them with advice to reduce their lead exposure.

88. "The Other College Rankings" By Joshua Green

The Other College Rankings
When it comes to national service America's "best colleges" are its worst. By Joshua Green Chances are that if you attended college in the last 35 years and didn't come from a wealthy family, you received financial aid that included a work-study job. And chances are that the job you held entailed washing dishes in the cafeteria, opening mail in the registrar's office, or signing out basketballs at the school gym. Though you may not have been aware of it, 75 percent of your wages came from Uncle Sam, through the Federal Work-Study Program, created to help students pay their way through college. Today, the program is bigger than ever, providing jobs to almost one million students through more than $1 billion in financial aid. But for a small number of students, work-study means more than just providing grunt labor for their college or university. It involves serving their community by tutoring, mentoring, or building homes for low-income families. Suzanne Mastrogiovanni, a senior at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, teaches 7-year-olds in a local school how to read. Upon completing a three-hour training course and passing a police background check, she abandoned her previous work-study job of cleaning equipment in the athletic center. "That was kind of a grub job," she says. "But working with kids every day is a new adventure." About 40 percent of Nova Southeastern's students work in community service to fulfill their financial aid requirement, one of the highest rates in the country.
