Independent students may face the challenge of transitioning to college without this very important support. Below you will find information on resources available specifically for independent students. Independent Student Definition
The Washington Education Foundation considers students who have not lived with their parents for an extended period of time or those students who support over half the costs of caring for a child for any period of time to be independent students. This includes students who live with relatives, on their own, in foster homes or group homes, with friends or other adults. There are currently over 330 independent students on WEF scholarships, including over 130 former foster youth. 230 independent students are in the Achiever’s Scholarship Program and 100 are in the Governor’s Scholarship Program. FACT OF THE DAY
Parents' Sex Ed Center
When parents talk to and affirm the value of their children, young people are more likely to develop positive, healthy attitudes about themselves. This is also true when the subject is sex. Research shows that positive communication between parents and their children can help young people establish individual values and make healthy decisions.
According to Barbara Huberman, RN, MEd, Director of Education and Outreach for Advocates for Youth, parents who act on the belief that young people have the right to accurate sexuality information are parents whose teens will delay the initiation of intimacy and use contraceptives when they choose to become sexually active.

PRC Outreach Mission Statement ... Web Design, LLC 25 years!!! Dear Members, The Parent Resource Center was established 25 years ago to give mothers a place where they could exchange information with each other, learn from professionals and share the joys and challenges of parenthood. In founding the PRC, Lynn Randolph broadened a home-based parenting program for low-income parents already established in Port Washington. Lynn recognized that all parents were increasingly under stress because they were raising their children without the traditional neighborhood or extended family support systems. She also understood that women who left their jobs to raise their children often had difficulty dealing with the isolation and uncertainty of their new role. In 1979 and for 15 years thereafter, the PRC was housed in 1 1/2 rooms of a school administration building. In these early years, Mommy and Me classes, open playtimes and professionally led workshops were the total of what was offered. But the need was great. Within 3 years the PRC had a membership of over 300 families and most classes had waiting lists. In 1985, the PRC moved to 232 Main Street with the creation of the Landmark Community Center.

School Nurse Role in Bioterrorism Emergency Preparedness and Response. Position Statement. Revised. http://www.nasn.org/positions/2005psbioterrorism.pdf (National Association of School Nurses. , Jun 2005) It is the position of the National Association of School Nurses that school nurses should be designated and recognized as first responders to mass casualty emergencies, including those resulting from bioterrorist events. School nurses should be trained in protection, detection, and treatment of victims of such events and in the command and control management techniques of the logistics of such a situation. The strategic position of well-prepared nurses within the school environment has significant potential for minimizing the effects of a bioterrorist attack in school settings and, subsequently, in the community at large 3p. Parenting Team Annual Report 2000 The Washington State University Cooperative Extension Parenting Team provided resources and programs for parents, professionals and volunteers in the year 2000. Programs for Professionals and Volunteers * A large percentage of those who responded came for professional development purposes, to hear the keynote speakers and to attend specific workshops. * A majority of respondents also came to network with other parent educators and to learn about parenting resources and curriculum. * Although only 28% stated that they attended to improve their own parenting skills, 68.5% of all respondents indicated some form of personal change had taken place as a result of attending the conference. Based on this sample, one outcome from the conference was that the majority of respondents increased their own parenting skills even when they had not come for that purpose. * The survey results show the following outcomes for those who responded: 1. A majority (62%) of parent educators reported that The Northwest Regional Parenting Conference is the major statewide event coordinated by the WSU Cooperative Extension Parenting Team. Team members also conduct high quality training on the local level for parent educators and child care professionals in various counties throughout Washington State.
