What Does Research Say About Interagency Collaboration?

NCREL, Oak Brook, 1992 Poverty, unemployment, inadequate housing, poor health care and nutrition, substance abuse, inadequate education and training, teen pregnancy, and violence are challenges hundreds of thousands of our youngsters and their families face every day. It is no wonder that children bring more than educational needs into the classroom, that women bring more than employment needs into the welfare office, that teens bring more than health concerns into the health clinic, and that families with infants and toddlers bring more than a need for parenting skills into a family support center. It is an examination of these realities-by administrators, policymakers, teachers, and other frontline practitioners-that has resulted in a new wave of state and local initiatives to provide more comprehensive and integrated services to children and families. These initiatives are based upon the recognition that, from the perspective of children and families, the current system of services is too often fragmented and difficult to access. Families find our systems are contradictory, restricting, and disempowering. In short, they simply fail to meet the real needs of children and families. This section illustrates the nature and magnitude of the problem and presents a vision of its solution through interagency collaboration. This story is told through the following areas:

WHO WE ARE The National Association of State Foresters is a non-profit organization that represents the directors of the State Forestry agencies, eight U.S. territories (American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, the Northern Marianas Islands, Palau, Puerto Rico, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands), and the District of Columbia. The State Foresters are organized in Executive Committee and NASF Committees which serve to develop policy and implementation guidance for our core programs. WHAT WE DO The State Foresters provide management assistance and protection services for over two-thirds of the nation's forests. Assistance to Private Landowners ~ Within the vast acreage of state and private lands are nearly ten million non-industrial private forest (NIPF) landowners who operate under a wide variety of goals and circumstances. These private forest lands provide over seventy percent of the nation's wood supply, and contribute to numerous other public benefits such as clean air, clean water, healthy wildlife habitat, and enhanced outdoor recreation. We work closely with these individual resource managers to ensure that they have the best technical, educational, and financial assistance available to help them achieve their objectives in an environmentally beneficial way. AIBS provides a variety of public-policy services for our members and the biological community at large. What are the Regional Resource Centers?
The six Regional Resource Centers (RRCs) are specifically funded to assist state education agencies in the systemic improvement of education programs, practices, and policies that affect children and youth with disabilities. The RRCs help states and U.S. jurisdictions find integrated solutions for systemic reform, offering consultation, information services, technical assistance, training, and product development. The beneficiaries of the RRCs' work are children and youth with disabilities, and the families and professionals associated with them.

Welcome to the NAFEO Internship Program!
For over a decade, the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO) has facilitated internship assignments in government and industry for students enrolled in historically and predominantly black colleges and universities. The program is unique because NAFEO arranges placements for students with employers, while providing an allowance for housing and round-trip travel to D.C. Additionally, interns are also provided stipends to defray the cost of transportation to and from their work sites. For interns who are employed in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, NAFEO provides an orientation session at the beginning of each program session, and brings all interns together at least twice during their assignment periods for seminars on a range of topics which enhance the internship experiences. If you are a student looking for opportunities to gain valuable work experience to supplement your coursework, or an employer seeking outstanding young people, you have come to the right place.
