Christ Church has been in continuous service for over 200 years and is best known for pew number 15, which was the family pew of George Washington. The church is Georgian in style and much of the building has been carefully restored. Guided tours of Washington's Christ Church are available.

October 19, 2004 SEATTLE St. Stephen's Church in Oak Harbor and St. Charles Church in Poulsbo on Tuesday severed their ties with the Episcopal Church USA, in part to protest the consecration of an openly gay bishop. Rev. Carol Harlacher, St. Stephen's rector, delivered the news in a meeting with the Rt. Rev. Vincent Warner, Episcopal Bishop of Olympia. "After months and years of prayerful consideration, we must reaffirm the orthodox teachings of scripture, from which ECUSA has departed during the past 30 years," Harlacher said. "The actions of ECUSA have destroyed the unity of the Anglican Communion." Members of both churches voted to disassociate from ECUSA on Sunday and placed themselves under jurisdiction of the Anglican Province of Brazil in the Diocese of Recife, which is a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion. "To see ECUSA increasingly ignore the foundational teachings of Scripture has been painful and challenging for our church members," St. Charles Rector Rev. Duncan Clark said. The Episcopal Church USA has been rocked for consecrating New Hampshire Bishop V. Gene Robinson. The decades-old rift over homosexuality broke wide open last year when the Episcopal General Convention confirmed Robinson's election as bishop of New Hampshire.

September 11, 2001 : Release
Churches open doors for prayers, shelter By Kevin Eckstrom As city streets emptied, church, synagogue and mosque doors were swung open, with hastily made signs inviting people inside. At the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception here, more than 3,000 gathered Tuesday (Sept. 11) with little notice for Mass celebrated by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. In pews and silent chapels, parishioners shed tears of anguish and prayed for peace, evidence that the nation's emotional and spiritual scars may be deeper than her physical ones. "Let us pray that this nightmare will soon be over," McCarrick said Wednesday during a packed Mass at St. Matthew's Cathedral downtown. McCarrick ordered all parishes in the archdiocese of Washington to remain open for prayer, and instructed priests to display the elements of the Eucharist for devotion. A similar appeal to open churches was issued by the bishops of the United Methodist Church and the archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Church. In New York, the Rev. Walter Tennyson of Broadway Presbyterian Church composed a special liturgy of prayer for a 1 p.m. service for passers-by, also opening the church as an overnight shelter.

The Rev. Eugene Matthews, left, senior pastor of Asbury UMC in Washington, D.C., and the Rev. J. Philip Wogaman, senior pastor of Foundry UMC, chat as their parishioners share a joint lunch at Asbury. In the 1830s the black members of Foundry left to form the all-black Asbury, and Foundry remained segregated until 1962. On Palm Sunday the formerly segregated congregation, now more diverse, headed to its African-American "child" church, now a historic landmark, to formally apologize for its racism. CHURCHES:
    BIG VERMILION
Big Vermilion Church, about two miles north of Newport, Indiana, was already a member of the Eel River Association of Indiana, in August 1826. The few minutes which have been located of the Vermilion Association show that Big Vermilion Church was the host church in 1833, 1840, 1843, 1854, and 1861. This church was represented and assisted in the constitution of Hopewell Church, in July 1829.
    FIRST DANVILLE
First Danville Church was organized in 1829, or earlier, at Danville, Illinois, probably through the labors of Elder Daniel Parker. The church prospered for some time. In 1849, this church had 54 members. This church was represented and assisted in the constitution of Hopewell Church, in July 1829, but how much earlier this church was in existence we could not learn.
    SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:
Beasley, Blankinship, Buckles, Froman, Hannas, Leonard, Mahuren, Miller, Norris, Stipp, Swain, Tichenor (very incomplete list due to loss of records).
NOTE: The Minutes of the Vermilion Regular Baptist Association also show the existence of BREWITT'S CREEK, NEW HOPE, and WASHINGTON churches, but we have not been able to determine whether they were located in Vermilion County. We welcome help from anyone who can inform us further about these churches. We have a few names of the members of each of them.
