Phyllis Campbell didn't start out with a blueprint for her career. She didn't think she'd enter business, let alone become a chief executive at age 41, breaking gender and racial barriers. Now head of The Seattle Foundation, Campbell previously served as chief executive of U.S. Bank of Washington for eight years, making her the first woman to become a bank president in the state. While only 9 percent of board directors of publicly traded companies in Washington state are women, she serves on three boards: Alaska Air Group, Puget Energy and Safeco. "I'm certainly always conscious of my gender and my ethnicity," said Campbell, 53, who is Japanese-American. "A lot of who you are is hard to separate from what you do."
