About Us
Resources Publications Partners ... News STUDENTS ON SCHOOL BOARDS Students on School Boards of Education Resource Guide Last Updated March 200 INTRODUCTION- STUDENT participation on boards of education is a small part of a much larger movement towards meaningful student involvement throughout education. Since the 1960s the effort to promote student representation has waxed and waned, according to the will of school officials and the sincere interest of students involved. Today that tide is turning, and students across the US are calling for deepened engagement in the decision-making that affects them on all levels - in the classroom, in the auditorium, and in the boardroom. This guide can also serve students, educators, administrators, and concerned community members around the nation as they lobby for student participation on school boards of education. This is a multi-topic resource guide promoting Student Voice, Participation, Engagement, Involvement, and Representation on Local, District, Regional, and State Boards of Education. Includes research, examples, and other resources for students, educators, administrators, and concerned community members who support validating student voice in school decision-making by including students on local and state school boards of education.

This document provides an overview of architecture education and the road to professional licensure in architecture in the United States. Architecture Degree Programmes Professional Architecture Education
There are two professional degrees in architecture that lead to licensure as a practising architect in the US. Bachelor of Architecture (B Arch)
The Bachelor of Architecture (B Arch) degree is usually five years in length. Most B Arch degrees are accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) . A B Arch from an NAAB-accredited university is one option on the path towards professional licensure as an architect in the US. The B Arch should be distinguished from the non-professional Bachelor of Arts in architecture, usually four years in length, which requires additional study prior to working as a licensed architect. Non-professional architecture degrees are not accredited by the NAAB.

Phyllis Campbell didn't start out with a blueprint for her career. She didn't think she'd enter business, let alone become a chief executive at age 41, breaking gender and racial barriers. Now head of The Seattle Foundation, Campbell previously served as chief executive of U.S. Bank of Washington for eight years, making her the first woman to become a bank president in the state. While only 9 percent of board directors of publicly traded companies in Washington state are women, she serves on three boards: Alaska Air Group, Puget Energy and Safeco. "I'm certainly always conscious of my gender and my ethnicity," said Campbell, 53, who is Japanese-American. "A lot of who you are is hard to separate from what you do." Now she wants to see other women and people of color capture similar success and widen the pool of individuals eligible to serve on boards.

Gifted Students: Questions and Answers
How Parents Can Supporting Gifted Kids

Effective nurturing of giftedness in children and adolescents requires a cooperative partnership between home and school, one that is characterized by mutual respect and an ongoing sharing of ideas and observations about the children involved. To accomplish this partnership, parents and educators must know something about giftedness, understand the children's needs, and understand some basic principles of advocacy. Parents and educators should understand how to be effective advocates because recognition that all gifted children require programs specifically tailored to their unique learning requirements requires responsible action. Your Gifted Child (1989) provides practical suggestions on individual advocacy. If the problem involves many children, such as might be the case when there is a need for program development or expansion, a unified group voicing shared concerns is far more effective than the complaints of one or two people. Advocacy groups also provide mutual support and share problem-solving strategies.

A hallmark of American education is local control, where boards of education and for educational Reform. washington, DC US Government Printing Office.
http://www.nap.edu/readingroom/books/nses/html/1.html
Introduction
The National Science Education Standards are designed to guide our nation toward a scientifically literate society. Founded in exemplary practice and research, the Standards describe a vision of the scientifically literate person and present criteria for science education that will allow that vision to become reality. Why is science literacy important? First, an understanding of science offers personal fulfillment and excitementbenefits that should be shared by everyone. Second, Americans are confronted increasingly with questions in their lives that require scientific information and scientific ways of thinking for informed decision making. And the collective judgment of our people will determine how we manage shared resourcessuch as air, water, and national forests. Science understanding and ability also will enhance the capability of all students to hold meaningful and productive jobs in the future. The business community needs entry-level workers with the ability to learn, reason, think creatively, make decisions, and solve problems. In addition, concerns regarding economic competitiveness stress the central importance of science and mathematics education that will allow us to keep pace with our global competitors.
Why National Science Education Standards?
