Where Do We Go from Here?
Boarding School History Pratt was an Army Captain, not an educator. He had been put in charge of 72 Apache prisoners held at Ft. Marion near St. Augustine, Florida. The Army said that prisoners were suspected of having murdered white settlers, but never proved this claim. Captain Pratt started a prison school for the men in his charge. When the Ft. Marion prisoners were allowed to return home in 1878, he convinced 22 of them to continue their schooling. The Hampton Institute, a school for freed slaves in Virginia, accepted several of them. Carlisle’s opening allowed Pratt to resign his Army commission and to practice his ideas about educating Indians. Pratt’s goal was to "kill the Indian, not the man." In order to assimilate American Indian children into European culture, Pratt subjected them to what we would call brainwashing tactics today. These are the same methods that cult leaders use to coerce recruits to commit completely to a new way of thinking.
Boarding School Brainwashing Techniques
  • Many boarding schools were established far away from reservations so that students would have no contact with their families and friends. Parents were discouraged from visiting and, in most cases, students were not allowed to go home during the summer.

ASIAMS.NET ASIAN AMERICAN PARENTING PRIVATE SCHOOL BOOM PAGE 1 OF 4 private school education ain't what it used to be. Yes, private schools are still generally safer, more academically rigorous and claim with some justification to provide better preparation for life in the Ivy League. The difference is that, at least in boarding schools, life has gotten, well, more colorful. Foxcroft is a small all-girl's boarding school in Middleburg, Virgnia. "Boarding schools are perceived to be attended by blue-blooded New England types," says Anthony J. DeFazio, publicist for the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). "The reality is, since the mid-1980s, international students and students of other ethnic backgrounds have made big gains in boarding schools." NAIS statistics for 1996, the latest available year, put non-White enrollment at about 21% of the total boarding school populations. The trend is clear, according to Heather Loerle, Associate Director for the Association of Boarding Schools, a NAIS affiliate. In the current economic situation, "If anything grows a few percentage points, you start taking notice," says Hoerle.

The Reservation Boarding School System
in the United States, 1870 -1928 Justification and Rationalization Day Schools vs. Boarding Schools Carlisle Indian School and Richard Henry Pratt The System Begins to Fail By way of introduction: The Reservation Boarding School System was a war in disguise. It was a war between the United States government and the children of the First People of this land. Its intention was that of any war, elimination of the enemy. The reason this war is difficult to recognize is because it was covered by the attractive patina of a concept called "Manifest Destiny." Manifest Destiny was a philosophy by which the white european invader imagined themselves as having a divine right to take possession of all land and its fruits. The reason that the Concept of Manifest Destiny was so effective was because, as it steam rolled across the land, it dragged the masses with it. The hooks that dragged these masses were many and were forged by Christianity and the Christian imprimatur. Although the fuel that energized Manifest Destiny was economic, the inspiration was in its alignment with divine will. This quote from the essay

Sioux allege abuse at church boarding schools
Washington Post/June 2, 2003
By Sharon Waxman
Rosebud Reservation, S.D. The day the Rev. Kenneth Walleman came to the front door, Lloyd "Sonny" One Star went to get his gun. "I couldn't keep my composure. I kept shaking," said One Star, 46, a leader of the Sioux tribe on this reservation. "I was going to kill him." Walleman was a former administrator at St. Francis Mission, the Jesuit boarding school One Star had attended through his youth - a priest, One Star says now, who sexually abused him for years. Walleman fled before he could state his business that day a few years ago, but he might yet face the wrath of Sonny One Star - and that of other former students. After years of holding their silence, hundreds of American Indians are giving accounts of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of the priests and nuns who ran a dozen missionary boarding schools across South Dakota through most of the 20th century. Allegations of priestly sexual abuse in parishes have rocked the Catholic Church over the past year. But what the former students say occurred at the reservation schools into the 1970s was more systemic: They say physical abuse was a routine part of school discipline; that sexual abuse was commonplace; and that both forms of abuse were committed against children in the round-the-clock, unsupervised care of school staff members. Some former students have filed a $25 billion class action lawsuit in Washington against the federal government, which paid the church to house, feed and educate American Indian children. Since the lawsuit was filed in April, their attorneys said, the number of plaintiffs has expanded to include hundreds.

Hyde Leadership Public Charter School aims to be a community that develops socially conscious leaders of tomorrow, while reforming public education. Hyde focuses first and foremost on the character development of its students and believes that character development and personal growth enable students to recognize their unique potential and also to become leaders who demonstrate concern for others. Its three-pronged approach, character development, academic rigor, and family renewal, is not only revolutionizing the way public school students are sucessfully educated, but also is revolutionizing the school/student/family relationship. Background: Hyde Leadership Public Charter School was founded in 1999. It is the newest addition to the Hyde Schools family, which was founded more than 35 years ago and has become a nationally recognized leader in character education. The other schools in the Hyde Schools family are two private boarding schools in New England, and a public magnet high school in New Haven Connecticut. The Hyde Leadership Public Charter School is the first inner city public school that Hyde has run independently. Enrollment at Hyde Leadership PCS has almost tripled since its first year in 1999. It now enrolls 600 students in grades K-3 and 6-12, and by the 2004-2005 school year will have 1,000 students in grades K-12. Hyde Leadership's student body is 98% African American, the majority of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch.

So Your Kid is An Aspiring Artiste?
For students who yearn to perform, in theater, dance or music, these are schools worth knowing about.
So Your Kid is An Aspiring Artiste? For any parent overseas, distance can make it difficult to find the right American school for a child. For those whose kids seem destined for the performing arts, the task is doubly hard: Auditions and school visits can be impossible to arrange. To ease this task, FSJ has researched some highly regarded performing arts schools public and private that you may want to consider. That's not to say that a youngster with a strong desire to play music, sing, act or dance necessarily needs a specialized school. For example, Katie Buck, who grew up in the Foreign Service and who graduated in 1999 as a theater major from Wesleyan University, attended Sidwell Friends School, a highly regarded, and nonspecialized, private secondary school. Buck says, "I don't at all regret going to that school, though I wish I'd taken more acting classes. But at that point I wasn't sure I wanted to narrow myself to the arts." Last year, Buck presented her one-woman play, "I-Site," based on growing up as a "third-culture kid," to the Foreign Service Youth Foundation. She is now living in New York City and working in theater and television. Arguing in favor of a specialized arts school, however, is the limited arts programing that many public schools have nowadays. "When it comes to budget, arts programs are the first to be cut," notes John Mahlmann, executive director of the Music Educators National Conference.

History 1: The student examines and understands major ideas, themes, developments, turning points, chronology, and cause-and-effect relationships in US, World, and Washington State history.
History 2: The student understands the origin and impact of ideas and technological developments on history and social change. GRADE LEVEL: Secondary BASIC CONCEPTS: Impact of the Indian Boarding Schools ORGANIZING GENERALIZATION: "A major conflict between cultures occurred when the federal government attempted to bring American Indians into the mainstream of society following the 1871 conclusion of the treaty-signing period. The boarding school was the primary institution encouraging acculturation of Indian youth due to the school's adherence to a regime that reflected the military fortifications in which schools were housed. Different conceptions of time and history were taught in boarding schools, and Indian students were confronted with a school culture and curriculum vastly different from their own tribal reality." quote from From Boarding Schools to Self Determination by Willard Bill CULTURE AREA: Entire United States TIME PERIOD: BACKGROUND: In the post Civil War era idealistic reformers turned their attention to the "plight" of the Indian people, they believed that with the proper education and treatment Indians could become like other citizens: patriotic, and productive members of society. One of the first efforts was by Captain Richard Henry Pratt , who founded the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. His belief in the inferiority of Indian ways to those of whites led to his guiding principle, "kill the Indian and save the man." The devastation of the Indian Boarding Schools is still being felt by many Native American people and their communities.
