Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) offers important but underexploited School of Nursing, University of washington. Seattle, WA 98195-7261

About Us
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) offers important but under-exploited adjuncts to conventional health promotion and clinical assessment and management, yet there is minimal attention directed toward these topics in conventional health science professions schools such as nursing, social work, public health, dentistry, and medicine. It is critical that practitioners understand CAM and the interaction of CAM and conventional medicine and nursing. The widespread and increasing use of CAM by the consuming public amplifies the imperative for health care professionals to become familiar with the range of complementary and alternative care options and the roles they play in health promotion and clinical assessment and management. The primary purpose of this educational project is to enhance the integration of information about CAM therapies into UW health sciences curricula with emphasis on nursing.

Following a local inservice workshop "Developing Writing and Thinking Skills Across the Curriculum" last spring, teachers implemented the concept into all disciplines and grade levels. They work to keep learning interactive through participation in events like science fair, the ISDTEA Super Mileage Challenge, Project WILD, and the Kennedy Profiles in Courage Contest. Ensweiler Academy continues to develop community linkages. This fall, a new partnership with the Mental Health Association of Lake County and Purdue University brought "Power Paws" to Ensweiler. In the program, middle school students train dogs for animal assisted therapies while learning about animal behavior, planning, and training. A collaborative effort with IU Northwest started placing social work interns in the program in January 2003 to help students and their families with social/emotional issues.

    Community as Classroom
The Community as Classroom was piloted at ESD 112 in 2003 with suspended and expelled students in our Re-Entry Program. The Re-Entry Program provides at-risk youth with the structure and training for the acquisition of life skills that will allow re-integration back into their home school district with a sense of belonging and empowerment. We integrated service-learning and nonviolent communication strategies to create a unique and effective program that can be duplicated for educators and practitioners working with adjudicated and/or alternative school youth. The Community as Classroom program sprung from the question: How do you create a community of learners, thinkers, and teachers when many teens believe that involvement in community equates to punishment? First, create a classroom where relationships, not punishment and rewards, are the heart of the curriculum. Second, the service-learning method of designing and executing curriculum will allow for voice and experimentation, teamwork, and individual reflection. Teens who have been through the judicial system and who haven't had a positive experience in our public schools benefit from nonviolent communication and service-learning methodologies because both empower them to find empathy in a community need and to design projects to impact that need.

alternative School Does Whatever it Takes to Teach – June 29, 1994 washington Irving Elementary School Series, Part One December 21, 1994
http://www.thislife.org/pages/trax/text/school_mp3s.html
A Tale of Two Schools In the early 90's, NPR sent Ira Glass Two Steps Back)
Taft High
spent three-quarters of a million dollars and four years trying to implement some of the most popular schemes for restructuring schools. They failed, for common reasons that are rarely discussed in the national debate over education. Test scores went down, attendance went down, the dropout rate worsened, teacher and student morale sagged. By the end of Ira's year of reports, many of the pro-reform teachers quit or resigned.
Washington Irving Elementary
had more success back in the 90s. Irving changed the way classroom instruction was done. Students did a tremendous amount of reading and writing. Test scores climbed. Attendance was no problem. The mood of teachers and students at the school couldn't be better. But even at this exemplary inner-city school, there were problems. Lots of kids simply didn't want to do their work, despite all the attempts to make it appealing and interesting. And while test scores were rising, they were still about a year below national norms.
This American Life started the year after Ira's Washington Irving series, and these stories are a precursor to the show: told through scenes and characters, with funny moments and sad moments.
