Missing chapter in Revolutionary War history
    Vets’ graves documented
    By JEFF MEYERS, Staff Writer
SCHUYLER FALLS — Beneath a thick cover of poison ivy, barely visible to the untrained eye, lay a grave marker, broken in half and nearly illegible. ADVERTISEMENT It’s surrounded by a waist-high metal railing, setting it apart from the dozens of graves scattered throughout a stand of locust, pine and maple trees at the Old Schuyler Falls Cemetery. The grave marks the final resting spot for John Roberts Jr., a veteran of the Revolutionary War. But even more significantly, Roberts participated in the American takeover of Fort Ticonderoga in May 1775.

  • A Heroine in Her Own Right
The date was September 11, 1782. British troops and Native Americans were advancing slowly toward Fort Henry. The fort's supply of gunpowder would soon be gone. Elizabeth Zane, who was 14, volunteered to get more. The Indians were so surprised to see a young girl run out of the fort that they didn't fire one shot! Once in her family's cabin, Elizabeth filled a tablecloth with gunpowder, tied it to her waist, and dragged it back to the fort! By her act, Elizabeth became the youngest heroine of the Revolutionary War. She is honored every year with Betty Zane Frontier Days in the town of Martins Ferry and was immortalized in the novel Betty Zane by Zane Gray! [Top of Page] Buckeye Presidents

delivered the longest inaugural speech in history (1 hour and 45 minutes!) in very cold weather with no coat on!
was the first president to die in office. He died of pneumonia, contracted while delivering that long speech!

    Author's Product Rating
    Pros
dramatic portrayals, colorful characterizations, great campaign details Cons An exhaustive read, 567 pages in paper. The Bottom Line Nevin has added his name to those of Ross and Vidal in historical fiction writing with 1812. Full Review The following was originally posted June 8, 2000, but is herein revised and reposted. Hope you enjoy the review and the wonderful book. When a book, however, receives the accolades of James Michener and John Jakes as well as critical acclaim from the literary establishment, one can be certain of its special nature. Centering on the federal attempt to keep Washington from falling to the British, Nevin allows the readers to sense the grave danger the capital faced and the heroics of many during the time. Nevin has done his homework and presents a very accurate picture of the events. Dream West was a New York Times Bestseller. This work, however, has not done as well although sales have kept in on the shelves now for eight years.

        The War of 1812
        • U.S. troops engaged: 286,730 American battle deaths: 2,260 The U.S. declared war on Great Britain during its war with France. America passed a series of laws that closed its ports to British ships that were loaded with goods they planned to sell in the U.S. Colonists suspected that Britain was trying to prevent their western expansion by trying to claim land in what was then the Northwest Territory (now the Ohio River Valley) and arm American Indians. War was declared on June 18, 1812. Capt. Oliver Perry's victory on Lake Erie in September 1813 allowed American forces, under Gen. William Henry Harrison, to advance against the British, who burned Detroit and retreated into Canada. In August of 1814 a British expedition to Chesapeake Bay won an easy victory at Bladensburg and took Washington, burning the Capitol and the White House. The victorious British, however, were halted at Fort McHenry before they reached Baltimore, persuading British statesmen to end the war. The Treaty of Ghent was signed in 1814. The British gave up their demands for the Great Lakes region and an American Indian state under British rule. It helped further establish the northern boundary with Canada. The loss of British support gave the Indians little choice but to give up their land in the Northwest Territory.
