General Grant's Infamy
In 1862, in the heat of the Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant initiated one of the most blatant official episodes of anti-Semitism in 19th-century American history. In December of that year, Grant issued his infamous General Order No. 11, which expelled all Jews from Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi: The Jews, as a class violating every regulation of trade established by the Treasury Department and also department orders, are hereby expelled from the department [the "Department of the Tennessee," an administrative district of the Union Army of occupation composed of Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi] within twenty-four hours from the receipt of this order. Post commanders will see to it that all of this class of people be furnished passes and required to leave, and any one returning after such notification will be arrested and held in confinement until an opportunity occurs of sending them out as prisoners, unless furnished with permit from headquarters. No passes will be given these people to visit headquarters for the purpose of making personal application of trade permits. The immediate cause of the expulsion was the raging black market in Southern cotton. Although enemies in war, the North and South remained dependent on each other economically. Northern textile mills needed Southern cotton. The Union Army itself used Southern cotton in its tents and uniforms. Although the Union military command preferred an outright ban on trade, President Lincoln decided to allow limited trade in Southern cotton.

Just before midnight on September 25 Truman's battery awoke early to prepare for an 4 AM offensive against the German line at the Argonne Forest... The American Legion's "American" Birthplace: St. Louis, Mo.
American Legion Monument, across the street from the Soldier's Memorial, at 1315 Chestnut Street in St. Louis, marks St. Louis as the location where the veterans of World War I (American Expeditionary Force) began the American Legion in May 9 of 1919. While the veterans had met in Paris, France on March 15-17, 1919, the American Legion name and the organization's Constitution was approved in St. Louis, Mo. So while the American Legion was conceived in Paris, France, it really was of American birth, being born in St. Louis, Mo. The Preamble of the American Legion's Constitution reads

Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon, who commanded the Federal forces at Wilson's Creek, was an 1841 graduate of the United States Military Academy and a veteran of the Seminole and Mexican Wars. He had also served at various posts on the frontier before being assigned to command the U. S. arsenal in St. Louis in 1861. An ardent Unionist and a strong supporter of Lincoln and the Republican Party, Lyon worked closely with Missouri Congressman Francis P. Blair, Jr., to prevent the state from seceding from the Union. His death at Wilson's Creek at the age of 43 made him the first Union general to die in battle during the Civil War. Below are two views of Lyon's grave, located near Phoenixville, Connecticut. General Westmoreland dies; led US in Vietnam
July 19, 2005 General William C. Westmoreland, who as commander of US forces in South Vietnam from 1964 to 1968 presided over the period of greatest escalation in the Vietnam War, died last night. He was 91. General Westmoreland died of natural causes at Bishop Gadsden retirement home in Charleston, S.C., where he had lived with his wife, Katherine, for several years, his son, James, told the Associated Press. General Westmoreland's experience mirrored that of the United States in Vietnam, going from forceful confidence to bewildered frustration. Time magazine named him its Man of the Year in 1965, hailing him as ''the sinewy personification of the American fighting man." Barely two years later, the historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. was writing that ''Westmoreland may go down in history as our most disastrous general since Custer." Such an assessment would have been unthinkable when General Westmoreland took charge of the US Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (the official designation of US headquarters in Saigon). By most measures, he qualified as the best the Army had to offer: a battle-tested artilleryman-turned-paratrooper, who had six rows of ribbons on his chest (his decorations included four Distinguished Service Medals and a Bronze Star).

    119. Vietnam War / General
From Our war What We Did in Vietnam and What It Did To Us by David Harris, pp. 1516. (New York Times Books, Random House, 1996)
    http://www.doublestandards.org/mistake.html
    "A Mistake"
"Let us not lose sight of what actually happened. In this particular 'mistake', at least 3 million people died, only 58,000 of whom were Americans. These 3 million people died crushed in the mud, riddled with shrapnel, hurled out of helicopters, impaled on sharpened bamboo, obliterated in carpets of explosives dropped from bombers flying so high they could only be heard and never seen; they died reduced to chunks by one or more land mines, finished off by a round through the temple or a bayonet in the throat, consumed by sizzling phosphorus, burned alive with jellied gasoline, strung up by their thumbs, starved in cages, executed after watching their babies die, trapped on the barbed wire calling for their mothers. They died while trying to kill, they died while trying to kill no one, they died heroes, they died villains, they died at random, they died most often when someone who had no idea who they were, killed them under the orders of someone who had even less idea than that. Some of the dead were sent home to their families, some were reduced to such indistinguishable pulp that they could not be recovered. All 3 million died in pain, often so intense that death was a relief. They all left someone behind. They all became markers visited by those who needed to remember and not forget. The loss was enormous, and 'mistake' is no way to account for it. A course of behavior that kills 3 million people for no good reason cannot be passed off as something for which the generic response is Excuse Me."

    120. THE SMEDLEY BUTLER SOCIETY
Arbitrary and expensive wars, for corporate profit, constitute a racket according to general Smedley Butler, USMC, therefore people must be mobilized to support a Constitutional amendment to end war.
    http://warisaracket.org
    Welcome to
    THE SMEDLEY BUTLER SOCIETY
    dedicated to peace- anti-war- anti-intervention-pro-Constitution
Seventy years ago a highly decorated Marine Corps general, disturbed by his participation in various military interventions, declared that WAR IS A RACKET and that we need a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT to guarantee everlasting peace to our nation.
Smedley Butler's thoughts and conclusions are as important today as they were when he stated them, and they serve as a valuable guide to the actions that we need to take to achieve the aims of our constitution: "to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity."
