Short Publications Five-Star Cold War General Five-Star Cold War General Print Mail By Ben J. Wattenberg Posted: Saturday, January 1, 2000 ON THE ISSUES AEI Online (Washington) Publication Date: August 26, 1999 When Lane Kirkland died last month, the cause of freedom lost one of its most stalwart proponents. As I left the funeral for labor leader Lane Kirkland in mid-August, I got lost and drove through Arlington National Cemetery, the leafy sanctuary run with dignity and precision by the Department of the Army. America’s warriors rest there in peace and honor, overlooking the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial across the Potomac River. As a young man, Lane Kirkland served the full duration of World War II in the U.S. Merchant Marine, sailing dangerous seas, delivering the arsenal of democracy to our troops and our allies. He became a union man and a warrior on the same job. But Mr. Kirkland’s supreme service came later, as a five-star general in the Cold War. He was president of the AFL-CIO from 1979 to 1995. There have been problems and glories in the American trade union movement. There is grist there for many mills. By my lights there are deeper problems and fewer glories since Mr. Kirkland left. The proportional decline of union membership in the American work force, which began well before he took office, continues.

E-Mail This Article Published on Sunday, September 22, 2002 in the Telegraph/UK Gulf War General Says Iraq Invasion 'Totally Unjustified' by Sean Rayment The officer who commanded the British 7th Armored Brigade in the Gulf War has revealed that he is strongly opposed to a military invasion of Iraq. Maj Gen Patrick Cordingley, who commanded the brigade - the renowned Desert Rats - in 1991, believes that Iraq poses no imminent threat to Britain or its interests and that "the case for war has not yet been made by the politicians". Gen Cordingley told The Telegraph: "I'm absolutely opposed to a war. I feel very strongly that it is wrong. There is no justification for sending British troops to Iraq." He doubted that the dossier of evidence against the Iraqi regime - to be released by Tony Blair on Tuesday - would prove the case for war. "I don't think they have much, frankly," he said. It is understood that Gen Cordingley also has grave concerns about the number of casualties that could result from having to fight all the way to Baghdad. Based on his forecast from 1991 that military casualties in a full-scale conflict could amount to 15 per cent, a suggested British and American invasion force of 250,000 troops could suffer more than 37,000 casualties.

AUSTRALIA started the war: General
AUSTRALIA started the war General Peter Cosgrove yesterday revealed details of how Australia's SAS fired the first shots in the Iraq war. The mission has been cloaked in secrecy, and General Cosgrove said much of the covert operation must remain secret. He said the attack was launched hours after the deadline for Saddam Hussein to stand down expired on March 20. "At the first moment, with support of other coalition forces, our people crossed the border into Iraq and made a significant dash by night to our operating area. On the way we encountered several dozen Iraqis, whom we dealt with ," he said.

George Catlett Marshall
In his position as chief of staff, Marshall urged military readiness prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, later became responsible for the building, supplying, and, in part, the deploying of over eight million soldiers. From 1941 he was a member of the policy committee that supervised the atomic studies engaged in by American and British scientists. The war over, Marshall resigned in November, 1945.
For one year during the Korean War General Marshall was secretary of defence, a civilian post in the U. S. Cabinet. Having resigned from this post in September, 1951, three months before his seventy-first birthday, he retired from public service, thereafter performing those ceremonial duties the public comes to expect of its famous men. I am a dedicated member of TEAM MIB, and help to create scenarios for TEAM MIB. I am a novice player at the present time, but I hope to gain experience and move on to the intermediate level.
I believe it will probably take me a year or more to get to the intermediate level; until then, I will struggle it out at the novice level. Who knows, I might be able to beat a few experienced players here and there.

STORIES OF THE CIVIL WAR A Union Soldier Sees Red At Antietam
As the range grew better, the firing became more rapid, the situation desperate and exasperating to the last degree. Human nature was on the rack, and there burst forth from it the most vehement, terrible swearing I have ever heard. Certainly the joy of conflict was not ours that day. The suspense was only for a moment, however, for the order to charge came just after. Whether the regiment was thrown into disorder or not, I never knew. I only remember that as we rose and started all the fire that had been held back so long was loosed. In a second the air was full of the hiss of bullets and the hurtle of grape-shot. The mental strain was so great that I saw at that moment the singular effect mentioned, I think in the life of Goethe on a similar occasion- the whole landscape for an instant turned slightly red.

by Sierra These are truly the best of times for Civil War gamers; first Firaxis comes up big with Sid Meier's Gettysburg! , with its real-time tactical combat engine, and now Sierra delivers the goods with Civil War Generals 2 , a turn-based game that allows you to refight the entire Civil War - battle by battle, campaign by campaign. Make no mistake: the two games are very different, both in scale and in gameplay, and in many ways Civil War Generals comes off looking less sophisticated than SMG . The graphics are a bit dated, the game's mechanics are scarcely revolutionary, and the game interface is oh so Windows 3.1 - but the bottom line is that does what it sets out to do. That is to produce a fun, historically accurate, good-looking game that allows you to fight every major and most minor battles of the American Civil War at the regiment/brigade level. And that, my friends, is quite an accomplishment. In fact, one of most attractive things about this game is its amazing breadth. You can fight as the Yanks or Rebs, and the game includes 40 historical battles, with several what-if scenarios for each - over 160

59. War Is A Racket - Major General Smedley Butler
A short book by US Marine Corp Major general Smedley Butler on how the US military made war far more for Wall Street and big corporations than anyone's freedom or democracy.

WAR IS A RACKET Smedley Darlington Butler Major General - United States Marine Corps [Retired] Born West Chester, Pa., July 30, 1881 Educated Haverford School Married Ethel C. Peters, of Philadelphia, June 30, 1905 Awarded two congressional medals of honor, for capture of Vera Cruz, Mexico, 1914, and for capture of Ft. Riviere, Haiti, 1917 Distinguished service medal, 1919 Retired Oct. 1, 1931 On leave of absence to act as director of Department of Safety, Philadelphia, 1932 Lecturer 1930's Republican Candidate for Senate, 1932 Died at Naval Hospital, Philadelphia, June 21, 1940 For more information about Major General Smedley Butler, contact the United States Marine Corps. Chapter One WAR IS A RACKET WAR is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes. In the World War [I] a mere handful garnered the profits of the conflict. At least 21,000 new millionaires and billionaires were made in the United States during the World War. That many admitted their huge blood gains in their income tax returns. How many other war millionaires falsified their tax returns no one knows.
