BRIGADIER GENERAL ALPHEUS STARKEY WILLIAMS

Alpheus Williams had been at his post longer than any high ranking officer in the Army of the Potomac. He had been given command of his division when the Army of the Potomac was first organized into corps on March 13, 1862. In the fifteen months between that date and Gettysburg, he had commanded his division, and frequently his corps, on battlefield after battlefield. Williams was born in the village of Deep River, Connecticut. His father died when he was eight, and his mother when he was seventeen, leaving him a patrimony of $75,000, which was quite a fortune in those days. He graduated from Yale in 1831, a law student, although his journal discloses that he did not take his legal studies too seriously. Indeed, for the few years after graduation, his main intent seemed to be spending his money; between 1832 and 1836, he did little but travel extensively in the U.S. and Europe. Finally, however, Williams undertook the serious task of earning a living and mastering his profession. Upon returning from Europe, he decided to settle in Detroit, a boomtown in 1836. He married the daughter of one of Detroit's leading citizens and eventually fathered five children, two of whom died young. By 1840 he had been elected Probate Judge of Wayne County. In 1842 he became president of the Bank of St. Clair. In 1843 he purchased the Detroit Advertiser , a daily paper, selling it in 1848. In 1849, after his wife died at the age of thirty, he began a four-year term as postmaster of Detroit. When he arrived in Detroit in 1836 he had been admitted to the Brady Guards, a militia company, and from that time forward he assumed an increasingly prominent role in the military activities of the city. He was appointed lieutenant of the Michigan regiment bound for the Mexican War in 1847, but it arrived too late to see action. He also held other public military posts, including the presidency of the state's military board, and was a major in the Detroit Light Guard.

BRIGADIER GENERAL JAMES SAMUEL WADSWORTH

James Wadsworth was a trim, vigorous fifty-six years old at the time of Gettysburg. Topped by snow-white hair, with striking white mutton-chop sideburns, he led his division with a Revolutionary War saber in his hand. This last responsibility was too much too soon for the inexperienced Wadsworth, and the Union war effort suffered the consequences: it was Wadsworth who complained to Lincoln during the Peninsula campaign that the capital had been left unprotected by McClellan, resulting in Lincoln's fateful decision to withhold the entire First Corps from joining McClellan in his drive on Richmond. This made a bitter enemy of McClellan, and in the fall of 1862, seeing no prospect of serving in McClellan's army, Wadsworth allowed his supporters to run him for governor of New York against the anti-war Democrat Horatio Seymour. He was so intent on being a good soldier, however, that he declined to leave the army to campaign. As a result, he lost the election. He didn't seem to mind, enjoying the excitement and satisfaction of being with the troops in the field. In late December 1862, after McClellan had departed army command for the last time, Wadsworth joined the Army of the Potomac as commander of the First Division, First Corps, when a vacancy among its division commanders was created by the promotion of General George Meade to the head of the Fifth Corps. He became much admired and liked by his new division, who were impressed by a man so devoted to the Union cause that he had given up a comfortable life and was serving without pay. The men were also won over by his attention to their well-being. Wadsworth was a stickler about things like adequate rations and decent housing, and in winter quarters the men found it not unusual to wake up before dawn on cold mornings and see the old man poking his nose inside to find out for himself whether the huts were warm and decently ventilated. (On the weary march to Gettysburg, he would seize civilians who stood cheering by the roadside and take their shoes for his own men to wear.)

It is currently compatible with fantastic East Front Soviet campaign. To make it that way, I started overwriting WWII units with corresponding Cold War units. I had to be quite consistent in what I was overwriting. In other words, overwriting a Pz I with a Leopard II would mean Leopard II's showing up all over the place a few years too early.
So the Soviet I-16 will now be a Soviet MiG-15. The Soviet IS-2 tank is now a Soviet T-80. A Tiger II is now a Challenger tank.
The Americans, British, French, Italians, Spanish and Germans will be played by the Germans. And so on.

Closure Pre-Visit Lesson Plan Set: Objectives At the end of this lesson, each student: Will compare the words of a slave, a plantation owner, and a war general to those reflected in the song lyrics of the previous activity. Will explain how songs can reflect inaccurate viewpoints of the Civil War and provide at least two viewpoints of slavery, plantation life, and the Civil War. Will explain how the lives of the people on this plantation changed at the war's end. Materials: Diary excerpts, letters, and other primary source documents containing the words and viewpoints of a slave, a plantation owner, and a Union war general. Relevance: Following the field trip to City Point, students will have a greater understanding and visual perception of how one slave, one plantation owner, and one war general lived before and during the war. Students will be familiar with the experiences of Paulina Eppes, Dr. Richard Eppes, and General Grant following this field experience. They will compare the experiences these individuals had before and during the war to the opinions expressed in the lyrics of the songs. While songs reflect general feelings of a culture, they cannot express the opinions of a whole group of people. American Civil War general who defeated Robert E. Lee and George Pickett in the Gettysburg Campaign (1863). var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Encyclopedia Hancock, Winfield Scott, 1824–86, Union general in the American Civil War, b. Montgomery Square, near Norristown, Pa. He served with distinction in the Mexican War and was chief quartermaster on the Pacific coast when the Civil War broke out. Made a brigadier general of volunteers in Sept., 1861, Hancock fought in the Peninsular campaign (1862); in the Antietam campaign he succeeded to the command of a division. His command was heavily engaged in the battles of Fredericksburg (1862) and Chancellorsville (1863). Hancock, commanding the 2d Corps, played a conspicuous role in the Gettysburg campaign . Gen. George G. Meade chose to fight at Gettysburg on Hancock's recommendation, and in the last two days of the battle Hancock was foremost in repulsing the Confederate attacks, particularly General Pickett's charge on July 3, 1863. He was severely wounded. Hancock led the 2d Corps in the Wilderness campaign and in the operations around Petersburg until Nov., 1864, when he left to recruit a new corps. His course as chief of the military department of Louisiana and Texas after the war was characterized by a wise moderation, which was not approved by the radicals in Congress. He was transferred to another command at his own request. The Democratic party nominated him for President in 1880, on his military record. James Garfield defeated him, but with only a slight popular plurality.

or Britain, the Crimean War was part of the basic Eastern Question that had been going on since the 1780s and the time of Pitt the Younger 's ministry . To maintain the integrity of the Turkish empire had become one of the principles of Britain's foreign policy. By the Convention of Balta Liman (1838) Britain had won widespread concessions from the Porte that included:
  • special rates on most of the raw materials sold to Britain a host of benefits, grants and acknowledgements that gave Britain a very privileged position in the Ottoman Empire
Consequently, Britain felt that it was essential to keep control over the Mediterranean sea routes and to preserve the Ottoman Empire as a barrier against Russian expansionist tendencies. These considerations led to hostility against Russia. Britain also had the idea, advocated by Richard Cobden , that free trade would lead to world peace. The repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 had begun to turn Britain into a free trade nation; by encouraging other nations to turn to free trade, Britain was attempting to increase her own wealth. It has also been said that the British thought that they had the 'secret of civilisation' and wanted to export her political system to the remainder of the world.

Connotations of superiority come from the fact that ace is the playing card with highest face value. This may derive from the Latin "as", the name of a coin of low value. The term "flying ace" goes back to World War I when planes were both novel and hazardous. [ Achilles a-KILL-eez ) (Greek) Place name. For peace, for your dignity, against the war: General strike
Permanent Secretariat of the National Committee of CNT-IWA
The CNT-E, following the set out line of maximum consensus and unity in the rejection to this unspeakable war, and considering that we have already reached such an accord about the call for a general strike as a refusal and horror to such an agression, convokes the working class for a 24 hour General Strike on the 10th April.
We understand that, from the Union Organisations, we must articulate a joint and contundent protest in order to make this government, so far away from society, change its attitudes.
We, the workers, are the main victims in all wars, since we are majority in the society; they use us to fight other workers in the defence of the abject interests of a privileged minority; they make us hate, leaving that hate in legacy, confronting other workers that we have never met before and who have never offended us. The entire working class, everywhere in the world, are brothers since we suffer the same opression and the same
opressors.
