Generals
Introduction and acknowledgment
This is a concise index to the Generals who fought on both sides of the US Civil War, and has been specifically prepared for the Internet. It is not meant to replace the several excellent biographies and encyclopedias which have been published in print form, and which contain much more information than is intended for this index. The information here has been derived mainly from five publications - Ezra Warner's comprehensive works Generals in Gray and Generals in Blue , the Historical Times Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Civil War , Mark Boatner's Civil War Dictionary , and Francis Heitman's Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army 1789-1903 . Anyone wishing to know more about the General officers involved in the War should start there. Warner's books in particular have extensive bibliographical references and notes. This index does not include Union officers who promoted to the grade of Brigadier General by brevet but not promoted further. A list of such officers can be found at this address together with a description of brevet promotions. However the index has been updated to include the dates of brevet promotions for the Union General officers included here.

William Westmoreland took over as head of the Military Assistance Command in 1964, and oversaw an increase in troop strength to half a million by 1968. His most notable campaign was his defeat of the communists' Tet Offensive in 1968. However, the ferocity of the fighting undermined American public support for the war. As protest movements against the war grew at home, Gen Westmoreland kept pushing for more troops. Under his command, search and destroy tactics were used, as was the defoliant Agent Orange and the liquid fire, napalm. But efforts to drive the Viet Cong from the countryside were not particularly successful. After Vietnam, Gen Westmoreland was highly critical of both the Johnson and Nixon administrations' conduct of the war.

Over Spring Break, the roof was taken off, the supports were bent back into place, additional braces were welded into place, a new piece of roof was put on, and all of the ceiling tiles and vent covers were stuck back in place; not bad considering they only took two days to do all of that. The Mexican- American War: Crucible for Greatness
by John C. Waugh
Author The Mexican-American War stands for many things, admirable and not so admirable, in American history. But easily one of its most important and durable legacies was as the military laboratory and workshop, proving ground, crucible, and rite of passage for the men who would command on both sides in the American Civil War. In the Mexican-American War, most of the young subalterns who would command at the highest levels in the larger war to come sat at the knee of two of the great generals of American history, Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott. From them, in that relatively tidy war that knew no defeat on the American side, they learned what they knew of waging war on an epic scale. The names of the commanders who learned war from these two mentor-generals in Mexico constitutes a virtual roll call of the American military pantheon of the 19th century Robert E. Lee, U.S. Grant, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, George McClellan, P.G.T. Beauregard, James Longstreet, Albert Sidney Johnston, Joseph E. Johnston, George Thomas, George Meade, Edmund Kirby Smith, Braxton Brag, Joe Hooker, George Picket, and dozens of others. And what did these commanders-to-be learn? What did they store in their memory banks from their Mexican experience that they later brought to bear in the war in which they were the commanders of armies? The opportunity to learn was there for them all. They saw the two great generals first hand and up close. They were witnesses to perhaps the most perfectly executed and efficient campaign in all of military history.

A city in east-central Ohio in September will celebrate Army Gen. William T. Sherman and the 125th anniversary of his ``War is hell'' speech. The events will be Sept. 23-25, mostly in Lancaster in Fairfield County, the birth place of the Union Civil War general who marched in 1864 from Atlanta to Savannah through the heart of the Confederacy. The celebration will include nationally recognized scholars and authors and hundreds of re-enactors portraying notable Ohioans and key Civil War figures. There will be a Civil War tea and fashion show and history walks featuring a Civil War encampment. There will also be a Sept. 23 opening dinner at the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus. The speaker will be Dr. Richard McMurry, a Civil War author and historian. Re-enactors will portray Sherman and Ohio's own President Rutherford B. Hayes. Sherman (1820-1891) delivered his famous speech on Aug. 11, 1880, at the Civil War Soldiers' Reunion at the Ohio State Fairgrounds (now the Columbus Park Conservatory). ``The war is away back in the past and you can tell what books cannot. When you talk, you come down to practical realities, just as they happened.... There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but boys, it is all hell. You can bear this warning voice to generations yet to come. I look upon war with horror; but if it has to come, I am here,'' Sherman told 10,000 Civil War veterans.

T he South Vietnamese government awarded campaign medals to Americans who served in the Vietnam War. Each decoration was adorned with a metal scroll affixed to the ribbon and bearing the date "1960- ." The closing date was not filled in, perhaps prophetically, since in a sense for many Americans that war has never ended. If, as the medal scroll suggests, American participation is dated from 1960, the early years were those of an advisory effort. Then, in the spring of 1965, the United States began deploying ground forces to take part in the war, with the supporting air and naval campaigns also expanding proportionately. At the peak, in the spring of 1969, some 543,500 Americans were serving in South Vietnam, with many thousands more operating from ships off shore and airfields in adjacent countries. From June of 1964 American forces in the Republic of Vietnam were commanded by General William C. Westmoreland, while in the Pentagon General Harold K. Johnson became Army Chief of Staff in July of the same year. Both men continued in those posts until July 1968, when Johnson retired and was succeeded by Westmoreland, General Creighton Abrams then assuming command in Vietnam.
