She taught seventh-grade math while pursuing a degree in education, and was so dissatisfied that she cried nearly every night. "We did a block on percentiles," she says. The Waldorf curriculum, which emphasizes the arts, is universal, adapting well in cultures as diverse as Egypt, Israel, the Homelands of South Africa, the favellas of Sao Paolo, Eastern Europe, the Pine Ridge Lakota Indian reservation, and Japan. Many US Waldorf schools are melting pots of ethnic and religious diversity, with students and parents of Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Wiccan, agnostic, atheistic and other spiritual traditions. Waldorf graduates are a diverse group. A study of Waldorf high school graduates in Europe revealed that they tend to get into the colleges of their choice before students from any other kind of schools, public or private. But the study also found that Waldorf grads are not as likely to go to college right after high school. Many choose alternative paths, like farming or forestry or the arts or nursing or public service. Creeds The Religious Basis of Waldorf Education by Viola Larson Rudolf Steiner, born in 1861, was a brilliant thinker, who founded the Anthroposophical Society as well as the Waldorf Schools. Before founding the Anthroposophical Society, Steiner was involved with Helena Blavatsky and her Theosophical Society. Both of these societies share a foundation in occult speculation, including such ideas as humans possessing etheric and astral bodies as well as physical bodies.
