community diaries shop Preschool Prep Series: The Waldorf Method by Tara Swords Georgia Klenn was never content with traditional schooling. She taught seventh-grade math while pursuing a degree in education, and was so dissatisfied that she cried nearly every night. "We did a block on percentiles," she says. "If I gave them the formula, they could plug into the formula and get an answer. But when I gave them a word problem and they had to think for themselves, they couldn't do it." Frustrated, Georgia knew she didn't want to spend her life programming children to recite memorized facts. She wanted them to think. So when she heard of a style of teaching called the Waldorf method, Georgia knew it was the answer. "Even before I had kids, I read about it and started crying. I thought, 'I wish I taught that way.' It's absolutely incredible." Defining Waldorf
The Waldorf method that so intrigued Georgia was founded by a man named Dr. Rudolph Steiner in the early part of the twentieth century. He believed very strongly that education should not only engage the minds of children, but the bodies and spirits as well. These elements are not treated as separate; the Waldorf method is designed to educate all of them in concert. "[Children] are 'sense' beings," says Waldorf teacher Steve Johnson. "They smell and see and taste a great deal and we try to appeal to that." That philosophy was enough to convince Georgia Klenn to enroll her son Zachary in a Waldorf school, where he's been learning from Steve Johnson for most of the past six years.

Ask Kytka Would you tell me something more about children's toys?
August 1, 1999 Toys that Teach: A Lesson in Reverence, Gratitude and Beauty A toy is something your child invests precious time in and in this way it acts as a teacher. The right toy can teach your child to care, to be watchful and conscious, to be careful, to appreciate, to love. In your child’s hands are the keys to learning to be grateful, to appreciate beauty, to have a sense of peace and reverence for life in all its forms… By the same token, the wrong toys can teach your child anger, frustration, disregard, insult and mockery. How many times have you seen this at the community playground? Children mimicking the grotesque objects they have been playing with? Making grimaces and bullying the other children. They are putting out what they have taken in, from their toys. What can a plastic contraption possibly teach your child? What lesson is hidden within the action figure? When children have a room full of such toys they are often so overwhelmed, that they choose not to play at all. Grandparents come and say they are spoiled. Oftentimes, when they do choose to play, they play in a very aggressive and destructive manner. They show no sense of love or caring for these toys. They show no gratitude for these toys. These toys which growl at you and make grimaces at you seem to be designed to instill or teach anger, frustration, and hatred. Ask yourself "what does my child get from such a toy?" If you closely observe your child you will discover that their play lasts about 5 minutes at most and they end up being frustrated and overwhelmed. They physically look ill after playing this way, with these toys.

Documentation of lawsuit by small anti-Waldorf group against two public school districts in California. Since 1998, a small vocal anti-Waldorf group called PLANS (People for Legal and Non-Sectarian Schools) , situated in San Francisco, has pursued a federal lawsuit in Sacramento, California, against two local school districts for operating publicly funded Waldorf-methods schools , one a charter school and one a magnet school. In the spring of 1997, PLANS initiated a publicity campaign against Oak Ridge Elementary School, a public Waldorf-methods magnet school in Sacramento, distributing leaflets which falsely suggested to parents, including many recent Hmong and Mien immigrants, who did not speak English well, that the Waldorf program was part of a "cult" involved in teaching witchcraft to the children. In response, a number of parents picketed and boycotted the school. The local Sacramento Bee newspaper found no evidence at the school to support PLANS's claims, but a television news report of the picketing which repeated the allegations prompted interest in filing a lawsuit against the school and its school district. Funding to support the litigation, based on allegations of Wicca based religious practices at the Waldorf method school, was sought through and supported by a right wing law organization

On December 6, 2000, a petition for the establishment of a charter school was submitted to the Chico Unified School District ("CUSD") pursuant to Education Code section 47605. 2. The name of the prospective charter school is the "Blue Oak Charter School" ("Blue Oak"). 3. The petition was introduced, discussed and debated at the Board's regular meeting of December 6, 2000. A public hearing, as required by Education Code section 47605(b), was timely held at a Board special meeting on January 4, 2001. 4. On January 17, 2001, the Board, at a duly noticed portion of its regular meeting, and following approximately two hours of debate and discussion with charter proponents, voted to deny the charter petition. The Board further directed staff to prepare findings as required by Education Code section 47605(b), consistent with the Board's discussion. 5. The Board finds that the curriculum to be used by the school is sectarian and therefore in violation of Education Code section 47605(d). Specifically:

The Waldorf Philosophy

Natural Jewish Parenting Reproduced by permission: Spring 1999, Pages 34-39 A catalog that sold organic cotton children's clothes, books about nursing and natural birth, homeopathy kits, and ecologically-correct natural wooden toys was where I first came upon the concept of Waldorf education. The pretty angel mobile on page 69 was described as having been designed by "Anne, the Waldorf teacher" and being "beautifully attuned to the very young child." At the time, I browsed past the page, musing about how decorative nursery items seemed to be more for entertaining parents than babies. A few months later, after having read much about Anthroposophy, the spiritual movement that informs Waldorf education, the angel mobile didn't seem so innocuous. Anthroposophists believe that children's souls gradually "incarnate" into their bodies and that infants do indeed see angels and sense otherworldly presences until about the age of seven. Waldorf education, I'd discovered, was an offshoot of Anthroposophy and the fastest growing system of private schools in the world. Why were these schools so popular and what exactly were they teaching? I knew of a few Jewish parents who were considering sending their children to Waldorf schools in the U.S. What sorts of conflicts might they encounter within the Waldorf pedagogy? As a Jewish parent myself of a preschool child, I felt compelled to research for answers.

What's a charter school? In an effort to offer parents alternatives, state law now allows school districts to sponsor innovative charter schools that operate independently using public funds. There are three on-site charter schools in Chico, the fledgling Blue Oak and the long-established American Indian school, Four Winds, both sponsored by BCOE, and the 6-year-old Chico Country Day School, which offers kindergarten through eighth-grade classes and is sponsored by CUSD. Hearthstone, a BCOE-sponsored charter school for home-schoolers, operates in Chico and Oroville. Sunlight filters through the leaves outside the windows of Blue Oak Charter School, as 20 kindergartners sit in a circle on the floor inside, mesmerized by the dramatic story their teacher is telling. They are spellbound as tiny puppet-dolls enact the story they've heard read from a book before. In a few days, they will act the roles in the story themselves, in a planned curriculum of language development for students their age. That kind of hands-on learning is integral to the Waldorf method of teaching used at the school.

This newsletter is produced and maintained by Aileen Kawagoe. Please contact Aileen with your comments and subscription requests. III. Hot Topic: Educating Your Child: Does Method Matter? Montessori vs Waldorf Last issue we examined the goals and methods of the Classical schooling tradition and Charlotte Mason's methods. This issue looks at the schooling philosophies of Maria Montessori and Rudolf Steiner and provides a listing of schools in Japan influenced by the two schools of thought. Then follows a roundup of all four methods, their similarities and differences and what this means for the homeschooler. The Waldorf Method Waldorf schools (from preschool to high school) are said to collectively form the fastest growing group of independent private schools in the world. About 130 now operate in the United States, and 700 worldwide. Waldorf schools were founded originally by maverick Austrian philosopher and scientist Rudolf Steiner in 1919. He was invited to give a speech to the workers of the Waldorf-Astoria cigarette factory in Stuttgart, Germany, afterwhich the owner of the factory asked him to start a school for the children of the factory-workers. Steiner agreed and the first Waldorf school was born. Key features of Waldorf schooling Methods: 2) That imagination is the heart of learning permeates all of Waldorfteaching and learning. Key elements of the Waldorf teaching method include storytelling, fantasy-make-believe, art, drama, craft, discussion, the creation of a personal workbook. Practically this translates into a school day where the "main lesson" always unfolds with fairy tales, myths and legends, stories or drama. More academic math classes (that stimulate the head faculty) are likely to be balanced and followed on by music or foreign language classes (that stimulate the "heart" faculty of the child). The study of history may go beyond reading and writing about an era and involve performing a play based on the era. The old-fashioned face-less country-doll is a standard toy in Waldorf kindergartens since the teachers believe an incomplete toy allows children to use their imagination.

WALDORF EDUCATION In 1919, in the chaos following the First World War, Emil Molt, director of the Waldorf Astoria Cigarette Company, asked Austrian philosopher and teacher Rudolf Steiner to help create a school for his workers. Four months later, the first Independent Waldorf School opened in Stuttgart, Germany. From that spontaneous beginning, arose the Waldorf School Movement. Today, there are more than 150 Waldorf schools in North America and over 900 worldwide. It is the fastest-growing educational movement in the world. The Waldorf curriculum, which emphasizes the arts, is universal, adapting well in cultures as diverse as Egypt, Israel, the Homelands of South Africa, the favellas of Sao Paolo, Eastern Europe, the Pine Ridge Lakota Indian reservation, and Japan. Many US Waldorf schools are melting pots of ethnic and religious diversity, with students and parents of Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Wiccan, agnostic, atheistic and other spiritual traditions. Waldorf graduates are a diverse group. A study of Waldorf high school graduates in Europe revealed that they tend to get into the colleges of their choice before students from any other kind of schools, public or private. But the study also found that Waldorf grads are not as likely to go to college right after high school. Many choose alternative paths, like farming or forestry or the arts or nursing or public service. The study also found that Waldorf grads score much higher on measures of happiness, life-satisfaction and optimism for the future.

These principles are laid out in the six-volume work, " The Original Home Schooling Series ," by Charlotte M. Mason. In addition to the standard core subjects, the study of fine arts and nature are integral. The most unique element to this approach, however, isn't so much found in the method of teaching as it is in testing the knowledge gained. Rather than using a standard question-and-answer format of testing, a process called " narration " is used to quantify learning. Author Catherine Levison explains it this way:

The Religious Basis of Waldorf Education

Rudolf Steiner, born in 1861, was a brilliant thinker, who founded the Anthroposophical Society as well as the Waldorf Schools. Before founding the Anthroposophical Society, Steiner was involved with Helena Blavatsky and her Theosophical Society. Both of these societies share a foundation in occult speculation, including such ideas as humans possessing etheric and astral bodies as well as physical bodies. Both societies teach that humans are evolving through successive lives or incarnations into beings that are capable of communicating with super natural entities or powers. Steiner, unlike Blavatsky, brought to his society a unique concept about Jesus Christ. He writes of the Christ impulse that allows humans to evolve into a higher "personality" that is able to "ascend . . . into the divine-spiritual world."3
