    Waldorf-style school stirs controversy
Parents claim charter school is not religious
    Marin Independent Journal/August 3, 2003
    By Nancy Isles Nation
Parents in the Ross Valley are asking the school district to establish a Waldorf-inspired charter to educate the "whole child" but they could run into opposition from others who think such a school should not be publicly funded. The parents who developed the 88-page Waldorf proposal say the program would take a Waldorf-based approach but will not include religious aspects associated with the private schools. Critics, however, say the Waldorf method has no place in publicly funded schools because it is based on religion and violates the Constitutional division between church and state. Parents submitted the proposal to the Ross Valley School District Board of Trustees on June 10. The district has 30 days under state law to hold a public hearing on the issue. The board has scheduled a meeting for 7 p.m. Thursday at the district office. The board is not scheduled to make a decision at that time. "We don't have any position on it now. We are looking at it and studying it," said Superintendent Pat Davis.

Although the first three articles ( Part 1. Part 2. Part 3. ) discussed the main methods of homeschooling, there are many others to consider. Some of these methods are used in conjunction with other methods, to make sure the child has a well-rounded education.
    Independent Home Study
Some public school districts have created their own homeschools. In the past, students who attend IHS would be home-bound students with long-term illnesses or those who are unable to attend regular school for diciplinary reasons. More recently, public schools have started offering homeschooling options. Most IHS supply all the books, teacher's manuels, and other supplies free of charge. They give you the support of a teacher, whom you meet either weekly or monthly. Many offer field trips, special classes, clubs, and recreation with other homeschoolers. IHS would be a good choice for a family that has opposition from relatives, or is unsure of how well they would do on their own. However, make sure the books you receive from the program are currently used by the school district. Some his prgrams are not well supplied. Never go with a IHS program where the teachers try to pressure you into re-entering public school.

    Homeschooling Methods - Part 3 of 4

The first two articles ( Part 1. Part 2. ) in this series dealt with formal homeschooling, unschooling, deschooling, eclectic, unit studies, and the Charlotte Mason method. Although all of these are forms of homeschooling, each having some similarities, they differed in styles and workload. In this article we will cover umbrella schools, cyber-charters, and the classic methods of homeschooling.
Umbrella Schools AKA Charter Schools and Co-Ops
This style of homeschooling is where a private institution provides the materials homeschoolers need, including a teacher, while still educating the child at home. Most schools of this type provide teaching assistance as well as learning materials. Some provide a set curriculum, in which you are expected to return papers or records to them for grading and credit. Courses cover typical public school subjects. Many of these schools offer benefits such as graduation ceremonies, transcripts, and diplomas.
Co-ops are similar to umbrellas, but generally cover only one or two subjects each semester or year. They tend to be much less formal; although more organized groups may have set hours and days when they meet. Smaller co-ops are often a group of local homeschooling families who get together to share expenses, enter competitions, and go on field trips.

Is Waldorf Education Christian? By William Ward
Waldorf schools seek to cultivate positive human values of compassion, reverence for life, respect, cooperation, love of nature, interest in the world, and social conscience, as well as to develop cognitive, artistic and practical skills. The soul life of the child is affirmed and nourished as the ground for healthy, active thinking. Because of this, Waldorf schools sometimes are mistakenly perceived as religious, or, in particular, as Christian schools. Nevertheless, parents of various religious views and ethical philosophies-Catholics, Jews, Buddhists, Protestants, Sufis, Muslims, eclectic seekers, and agnostics-choose Waldorf Education for their children. They do so knowing that Waldorf schools are based on a spiritual view of the human being and of the world. However, no religion, including Christianity, is promulgated in a Waldorf school.
The fundamental tone of this worldview-which is not a religion-is in harmony with many world religions and philosophies. It stands in opposition, however, to the powerful, contemporary cultural currents based on materialism. In our culture a form of psychological conditioning occurs on an unprecedented scale through the cumulative impact of the 20,000 commercials that the average American child sees each year. Unchallenged assumptions about human nature convey reductionist views of the human being. These strongly influence how children form their fundamental "image of Self," their view of the essential nature of the human being. This is distinct from the individualized self-image each child also forms.

The Charter Schools federal court case - is Waldorf education religious? By Robert Freehling
    NNA-B A C K G R O U N D:
For some years now, People for Legal and Nonsectarian Schools (PLANS) has been pursuing legal action against two school districts in the US state of California for using Waldorf teaching methods. PLANS claims that the Sacramento Unified School District and the Twin Ridges Elementary School teach religion in their schools in breach of the US constitution because their teaching is based on Waldorf education methods. The schools dismiss the charge and respond that while they successfully apply the Waldorf method in their teaching, they do not teach the content of anthroposophy or Rudolf Steiner’s writings. In the most recent development, the Sacramento federal district court threw out the case on the grounds that PLANS lacked standing to be a proper plaintiff. The case is by no means finished, however, since PLANS has already submitted an appeal. Robert Freehling presents the background to the case. Sacramento, 19 September (NNA)

Although universal preschool is being started in some school districts, many families still go the traditional route.
The following is a look at three of the most popular names of methods used in private nursery schooling: Waldorf, Montessori, and Bank Street. advertisement OAS_AD('BoxAd')
    Waldorf
Based on the work of Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), the Waldorf philosophy is that the work of a young child is to play, and that early learning frequently takes the form of imitation.
Waldorf emphasizes the arts. It is nonreligious but based on the belief that life has a spiritual dimension. To keep the imagination unspoiled and promote independent thinking, families are asked to limit television, movies and computers. A typical day might involve a teacher baking bread while young children pretend to do the same thing, learning about measurement, heat, nutrition and chemistry through experience.

I have been teaching children in the classrooms for nearly ten years as a Waldorf teacher in an educational system designed to create lifetime learners. Now, as a tutor, besides reinforcing on a one-one basis (a rarity in the classroom) the skills taught in school , I do so in a way that is both creative and fun. I see my self as an advocate for both the student as I understand the pressures children may be experiencing to succeed in school, as well as for the parents who want their children to do their best.
