License Plate Kid Zone Coyote Impacts Of The Eastern Coyote On Wildlife Populations Introduction The Eastern Coyote has only in relative recent times expanded its range to the eastern United States. The coyote has been a significant predator in the west and it will likely prove to have the same impacts in the east. Historically, the coyote was commonly found in the Great Plains of western and mid-western states. During the last 50 years, expansion of the coyote eastward has come from the northwest and southeast. Today, the coyote occupies every state in the continental United States and ranges from Alaska to the Panama Canal. On their path to the east the coyote hybridized with timber wolves in the north and red wolves in the south and possibly wild dogs. Thus, at 20 to 45 pounds, the eastern coyote is bigger than its western cousin. The eastern expansion of the coyote was probably a result of the elimination of its ancient foe the timber wolf and the establishment of the deer herd in the east as a food base. The coyote is an adaptable animal and there may be more coyotes today than there were in colonial times.

Wallace Thurman started out as an outsider in Mormon Utah and brought his own uniquely witty satire to the burgeoning Harlem Renaissance Wallace Thurman was a genius to his friends and colleagues of the Harlem Renaissance. Langston Hughes records his admiration for Thurman in his autobiography, The Big Sea (August 1993). Noting that Thurman had an enviable critical mind, Hughes described him as "a strangely brilliant black boy, who had read everything." By the time of his death in 1934 at the young age of 32, Thurman could only be described as a revolutionary pioneer given the enviable record he left as his legacy. He published three novels: The Blacker the Berry, 1929; Infants of the Spring, 1932; and The Interme, 1932. His play Harlem: A Melodrama of Negro Life in Harlem (written in collaboration with William Jourdan Rapp) had reached Broadway. Perhaps most importantly, Thurman, along with Aaron Douglass, Bruce Nugent, Hurston and Hughes, founded Fire in 1926. The publication was so named, according to Hughes, "to burn up a lot of the old, dead conventional Negro-white ideas of the past ... into a realization of the existence of the younger Negro writers and artists, and provide us with an outlet for publication not available in the limited pages of the small Negro magazines then existing...."

West Nile Virus Activity - United States, 2001 In 2001, West Nile virus (WNV) activity was reported from 359 counties in 27 states and the District of Columbia (DC) to ArboNET, a web-based, surveillance data network maintained by 54 state and local public health agencies and CDC. This activity represented a marked increase from 2000, when WNV activity was reported from 138 counties in 12 states and DC ( ). This report summarizes surveillance data for 2001, which indicate that 66 human illnesses were reported from 10 states and that widespread WNV activity in birds, horses, and mosquitoes extended into the midwestern United States and several southern states unaffected previously. The findings in this report underscore the need for public education, increased WNV surveillance aimed at early viral detection, and sustained, integrated mosquito-control activities. In 2001, CDC conducted WNV surveillance with 54 ArboNET surveillance coordinators from health departments in the contiguous 48 states and six jurisdictions (Chicago, DC, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, and Philadelphia). Local WNV surveillance networks collected and tested for WNV or antibodies specimens from human and veterinary patients, dead birds, captive sentinel animals (mostly chickens), wild-caught birds, and mosquitoes. Test results, including county and week of specimen collection or illness onset, were entered into local electronic databases, and standardized summaries were forwarded weekly to CDC's ArboNET database system. In addition, reports of human WNV cases and other reports of WNV activity were reported to CDC by telephone, facsimile, or e-mail.

So explained Dr. Spero Manson, professor of psychiatry and head, American Indian and Alaska Native Programs, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver, in his talk, "Wounded Spirits, Ailing Hearts: The Legacy of PTSD Among American Indians," given Nov. 12 in Masur Auditorium. After warmly greeting the audience in the tongue of his native Chippewa Pembina tribe, Manson presented results of two major NIH-funded studies conducted during the 1990s showing that American Indian populations in both the desert Southwest and Northern Plains suffer higher incidence of trauma, thus elevating their risk of PTSD, than do either white populations or other large minorities such as blacks and Hispanics. Dr. Spero Manson (l) of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center meets with NIH director Dr. Elias Zerhouni in Masur prior to Manson's talk. Manson, a medical anthropologist who has enjoyed more than 25 years of NIH support, reported that, nationally, around 6 percent of men and 10-14 percent of women experience PTSD at some time in their lives. PTSD is an anxiety disorder, the consequence of witnessing extremely traumatic events such as war, violent attack, catastrophe and abuse. It is characterized by emotional numbing, hyperarousal, flashbacks to the precipitating event and intrusive negative emotions. Between 30 and 40 percent of those who are exposed to trauma go on to develop PTSD, Manson said. As one ex-GI described it, "Something's wrong, something's missing. You feel guilty, angry, horrified. I can't seem to shake it. It's one of those things that's always there."
