In June 1999, the American Medical Association formally adopted the position that appropriate medical care can only result from face-to-face consultations. because of problems with the quality of cyberpharmacies and the qualifications of cyberpharmacists. What is the size of the cyberpharmacy problem in relation to addictive drugs? Is the single case of online purchasing of drugs for misuse described by St George and colleagues in this issue of the Journal (page 118) an exception, or the start of a new and dangerous trend? We need more data, but we can make some observations. Licit drugs present a far greater problem than illicit drugs. Most drug-related deaths in our society are a result of diseases caused by tobacco. Tobacco accounts for over 80% of drug-related deaths and 79% of years of life lost.

The Not So Wild Wild West: "hard work, trade, tedium, and peace"
Brian Micklethwait today on Samizdata comments on the myth of the "Wild West " that some of us have for years known as a myth: One of the most potent anti-liberty memes has been that simple phrase, the "Wild West". Wild as in lawless, violent, murderous. And one of the most potent pro-liberty memes is therefore, if only because it negates the first meme, the fact that the Wild West was, in the words of a famous Journal of Libertarian Studies article by Terry Anderson , the Not So Wild Wild West This anti-"Wild West" meme deserves wider propagation. Paper 2004. xix, 141 pp. Illus., maps. The True Life Wild West Memoir of a Bush-Popping Cow Waddy
By Charley Hester Edited by Kirby Ross "First-rate early American history."— Booklist A sixteen-year-old runaway from Illinois, Charley Hester (1853–1940) lit out from home in 1869, bound to make a life for himself on the great American frontier. In the winter of his life seven decades later, he dictated an account of his experiences in the Wild West of his youth. Charley Hester’s memoir recounts the journeys that took him to Missouri, Texas, Indian Territory, Kansas, and Nebraska and brought him face-to-face with badman John Wesley Hardin as well as Joel Collins before Collins formed his band of stagecoach and train robbers. The young cow waddy also tells of meeting Wild Bill Hickok, observing Doc Holliday’s deft card play, and witnessing the waylaying of a drunken buffalo hunter by Wyatt Earp. In his own colorful language, Hester relates stories ranging from high jinks on the trail to a heart-stopping surprise encounter with Indians, as well as conflicts with nature in the form of blizzards, cyclones, quicksand, swollen rivers, bad water, prairie fires, and electrical storms. So engaging that they figured in Warner Brothers’ research for the classic movie

This Old West project has a companion People of the West page. Here you can find links to hundreds of biographical websites with lots more information about individual outlaws, lawmen, military leaders, native Americans, ranchers, cattle barons, and leaders in the early West. . . so many websites that we had to set up a separate location for all of them. Don't miss it!
Easier - Sometimes people talk about the 'West,' the 'Wild West,' or the 'Old West.' They are usually referring to the people and events of the western region of the United States during the second half of the 1800's. Harder - The romantic view of the Old West can be seen in western movies and novels that depict the Wild West as a time of gunfights, gambling, and Indian attacks. In reality, most inhabitants of the West didn't carry a gun or participate in shootouts. A century ago the American West was a rough and wild place. Far from the control of the US government in the East, the Old West was ruled by its own set of laws. In the early 1840s, settlers began moving toward the Pacific Northwest. After gold was found in California in the mid 1800s, people began to flood the west in search of their fortune. Next, cowboys began rounding up wild cattle and organizing herds. The pony express, the stagecoach, and ultimately the Transcontinental Railroad and the telegraph began to join the East and the West. By 1900, the range was fenced in to create ranches, the Native Americans moved to reservations, and many frontier towns became well-established cities.

Introduction
CREATE THE GREATEST WESTERN OF ALL TIME! Imagine that you are a movie producer who wants to make a new movie about the currently popular topic of the "Wild, Wild West". You are interested in dramatically portraying actual historical events in an exciting way. You want to show different types of characters and give the viewer a real feel for what the old west was like. You want to be historically accurate and creative at the same time, providing both knowledge and excitement for your viewers. BACK TO TOP
The Task Your job is to learn about the times and historical figures of the "wild west" in American history, and then choose a character that you find especially interesting to research further. You will write a short paper about your character and then use this person as the basis for a movie scene. The events in your plot must be historically accurate, although your script may contain made-up action and dialogue. Here are some questions to guide your background research:
  • During what years did the period known as the "wild west" occur?

Media Kit The Tourism Industry - Welcome to Wild, Wonderful West Virginia -Caryn Gresham The business of tourism is more than just providing what people desire when it comes to vacations-it is helping people realize they want to come to West Virginia for that vacation. That, in many ways, means more than just having the activity a traveler wants to experience. Beyond the opportunity to operate an outdoor recreation business, a ski resort, a bed and breakfast inn or a successful shopping venue, business leaders in the tourism industry realize they must have the right combination of research, marketing, hospitality, ingenuity and commitment to make their businesses work. The tourism industry in West Virginia is a four-season business with many small and mid-sized entrepreneurial businesses, mixed with large resorts, state parks and forests, gaming facilities, historic sites, fairs and festivals. Not just relegated to one travel activity, like outdoor recreation, our industry offers a combination of the travel options that are most wanted by national and international travelers. But it is doing the research-knowing what travelers want and when they would like to travel-that starts the engine for the tourism business in West Virginia. Nationally, the Tourism Industry Association of America (TIA) reports that, in 2003, more than 1.14 billion citizens traveled in the United States. Of that number, more than 80 percent traveled for leisure, 6 percent combined leisure and business in their trips and 12 percent traveled solely for business. Approximately 78 percent traveled by automobile, truck or recreational vehicle, 16 percent traveled by air and the remainder traveled by motor coaches, tour buses, trains and ships.

Exploring Wild Landscapes and Other Remaining Habitat for Imperiled Species E ach year Pacific Biodiversity Institute invites members and other interested people to join us on exciting explorations of some of Washington’s most spectacular wild lands and biodiversity hot spots. During the last two years we have visited numerous areas in Washington and British Columbia. Thank you to everyone that came and shared these fabulous places with us! We learned a great deal about the areas we explored, experienced some amazing and pristine wilderness areas, and best of all, we got to know many of our members. Hiking both on and off-trail, we enjoyed some absolutely stunning country and even set up grizzly bear sampling stations on one trip. We were delighted with rare and imperiled species (such as the Western gray squirrel), a cougar print and a Douglas-fir with an eleven-and-a-half foot diameter trunk. These trips help bring people directly in touch with the very areas we are working to protect. We gather information on biodiversity and other characteristics of these areas and connect with interesting people from all over the state.

Nathanael West published four novels. It was in France, posthumously, after World War II, that he first attracted attention. In his works West examined the reverse side of liberty and freedom - dreams turned into nightmare, or what he called "the secret inner life of masses". "At college, and perhaps for a year afterwards, they had believed in literature, had believed in Beauty and in personal expression as an absolute end. When they lost this belief, they lost everything. Money and fame meant nothing to them. They were not worldly men." (from Miss Lonelyhearts Nathanael West was born Nathan Weinstein in New York, N.Y., the son of immigrant German Jews from Lithuania. His mother was Anna (Wallenstein) Weinstein, and father, Max Weinstein, a construction contractor. As a young man West showed little ambition. He studied at Brown University, Providence, where he befriended the writer and humorist S.J. Perelman - he married West's sister. During these years he started to draw cartoons and write short surrealistic sketches, which he later collected as the novel THE DREAM LIFE OF BALSO SNELL (1931). West did not take his studies seriously - he borrowed his cousin's work and presented it as his own and failed a crucial course in modern drama.
