Library Journal Buffalo Bill in Bologna is a graceful re-examination of the origins of America's cultural domination at home and abroad. Robert Rydell and Rob Kroes refashion conventional wisdom by showing that mass culture served as an instrument for promoting American values well before World War I. While this topic has been amply covered for the twentieth century, it is virtually untouched for the nineteenth. Thus breaking new ground, Buffalo Bill in Bologna

Her attendance at the Wild West show was news everywhere in the English-speaking world, and the fact that she made her appearance in the context of the celebrations that marked the Jubilee Year of her reign only added more weight to the occasion. And what an occasion it was. When the show began and a rider entered the arena carrying the American flag, Queen Victoria stood and bowed. The rest of the audience followed suit, while British soldiers and officers saluted. As Cody described the moment All present were constrained to feel that here was an outward and visible sign of the extinction of that mutual prejudice, amounting sometimes almost to race hatred, that had severed two nations from the times of Washington and George the Third to the present day. We felt that the hatchet was buried at last and the Wild West had been at the funeral.

How far? How fast? What's next? Who's next? Even with a human epidemic like SARS, answering these questions can be gnarly. When the subject is, er, birds, research money dries up faster than a prairie pothole in a July heat wave. But even if your avian interests tend more toward KFC and turkey dinner than American crows and great horned owls, you might want to consider the wild birds. They are, after all, the most likely mechanism for West Nile's geographic spread. "There is some evidence, and a fair amount of belief, that it's being carried around in migratory birds," says Paul Slota, who's in charge of public information at the National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wis. "We think it's pretty clear that is happening," Slota says.

45. West Nile Virus - Its Avian Impact And The Further Dangers Birds Face From Spray
Case studies in New York and in Florida have shown that after many years of west Nile Virus has been found in 59 wild species of birds in New York.
http://www.abcbirds.org/pesticides/west_nile_position_statement.htm
West Nile Virus and Birds Scientists do not yet understand the effects West Nile Virus will have on populations of native North American birds. Already, close to sixty species, numbering in the thousands in terms of individual birds, have been diagnosed as having died from the virus in northeastern United States. It remains to be seen if the virus will spread to other regions of the U.S. and Latin America. Recent laboratory tests have shown that West Nile is 100% lethal to crows, but the mortality rate is likely to vary among susceptible species. Historically, immunologically naive birds have suffered devastating population losses due to introduced disease in many parts of the world. In the end, there may be very little that wildlife and health officials can do to contain the spread of West Nile Virus in the U.S. to protect birds. Mosquito control officials have responded responsibly in doing all that they can to stop the spread of the virus. However, most experts agree that West Nile has likely been established in North America and the time has come for the development of a standardized plan to combat the virus in the future. As a conservation organization, the mission of the American Bird Conservancy is to protect birds and their habitats throughout the Americas. To protect important bird habitat, a balanced perspective on mosquito control for West Nile Virus should reflect the important ecological role of non-target insects as natural mosquito predators, pollinators, and important food resources for birds.

ISBN 0-252-06787-8 (pbk), 0-252-02464-8 (hbk) Reddin writes in an academic but readable style and his book has much else to recommend it. Based on an impressive amount of research, Wild West Shows is a valuable examination of culture and image formation that complements rather than duplicates other books. Reddin offers new interpretations of Catlin, Cody, the Miller Brothers and Mix, but it is the treatment of Catlin that a majority of readers of this journal will probably find the most original. Most historians regard Catlin as a proto-folklorist, but Reddin says he is as much an entertainer as a scholar. Continue article Advertisement

Ron Yanosky, Harvard University
I shall always remember these three Fridays. My dream of America (this teacher is on a Fulbright Exchange Program) has been broadened and deepened, enriched unexpectedly by my inclusion in this event. The books, lectures, discussions were all pertinent and interesting and stimulated me into further thought and new outlooks on my own situation. Prof. Yanosky knows his stuffis a super communicator and stimulates discussion apparently effortlessly. This skill is impressive, the vision of Teachers as Scholars strikes me as progressive and rewarding. Teachers can only benefit from the Personal Development and the quality of teaching staff enriched for all the students of Boston. Thank you very much for allowing me be part of this. The program was great! The course had the feel of a true graduate level discussion, without the hassle of exams and papers (something we didn’t have time for). Good factual material that can be used in my class...this is what professional development is supposed to be. I’ll be back next year-there were several other courses that looked very good and helpful. I found the class thoroughly enjoyable. The format was engaging and thought provoking. The readings were excellent. It was wonderful to leave my classroom and spend some time as a "scholar" again. I will use the materials and ideas from our class discussions in my unit on the west. Ron was a good teacherboth knowledgeable and an effective captain of our discussions.

Chris Madsen, Bill Tilghman and Heck Thomas were the kind of shoot-'em-up, white-hat sheriffs that kept America clean, in the days of the Wild Wild West. Together with U.S. Marshal E.D. Nix, they kept settlers happy and, for the most part, alive. At least that's the story children and even scholars generally see and hear when they read about "cowboys and Indians" in the early 1900s. Now, however, a retired instructor who previously taught aerospace studies at UConn has unearthed information that sheds new light on history and in this version, Madsen, Tilghman, Thomas and Nix wear black hats. "It's incredible the amount of distortion one finds in books about those days," says Nancy B. Samuelson, author of a new book, Shoot From The Lip Samuelson, a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force, who also wrote a book titled The Dalton Gang Story , noticed discrepancies in the stories of other marshals and lawmen in Oklahoma when she went through newspapers, death records and obituaries during her research on the notorious 19th-century gang.

Sheridan Travel and Tourism
Background
Sheridan Travel and Tourism (STT) has a website to provide tourist and travel information about the Sheridan, Wyoming, area. After being online for 18 months, the STT website had attracted only 4,700 visitors. Their letterhead, business cards, and all other printed material clearly listed their website address, but the visitors just weren't coming. And the ones who did come rarely returned. The original design was simple (nothing wrong with simple), had about a dozen pages, lots of pictures, and used frames for navigation. But none of the pages had titles, descriptions, or keywords. The website was virtually invisible to the various search engines! The content was minimal, a few sentences about each season's activities, a few sentences about Western history, a calendar of events which listed mostly meetings of civic organizations. In short, there was nothing to grab a visitor's interest.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wildlife and West Nile Virus
WNV-1006-04
What Is West Nile Virus?
West Nile Virus (WNV) is a viral disease previously seen only in Africa, Asia, and southern Europe. This virus can cause encephalitis or meningitis, infection of the brain and the spinal cord or their protective covering. For the past five years, WNV has caused disease in the United States. In 1999, at least 62 people became seriously ill, and seven of those died. Since then, WNV has rapidly spread throughout 46 states and the District of Columbia. During the year 2000, 21 human cases of WNV encephalitis were reported in the United States, with two deaths. In 2001 there were 56 cases with seven deaths. In 2002, 4,156 human cases of WNV encephalitis or WNV fever were reported, with 284 fatalities. In 2003, more than 9,700 human cases of WNV encephalitis and fever were reported from 46 states, with at least 223 fatalities to date. In Ohio in 2003, WNV was reported in 79 of 88 counties, either in birds, mosquitoes, humans, or horses. There were 107 human and 106 horse cases identified. It is expected that WNV will continue to be a disease threat in 2004.

UC Berkeley/Sacramento Program
California's Power Play Is a Crisis of Conventional Wisdom
T his is an edited excerpt of a series of talks Timothy P. Duane, UCB, Associate Professor of Environmental Planning and Policy, gave at IGS in December 2000, to the California Research Bureau in January 2001, and to the Energy and Resources Group in February 2001.
I think it's important to take an historical perspective on the current crisis because there has been a milieu in which the debate has progressed, that takes as given a wide set of commonly understood facts that have a lot of problems associated with them. It's also based on a very simplistic set of models of how the world works. I'm quite concerned about the panic-stricken context in which commonly accepted facts that are based on simplistic premises may then lead to solutions. There is a pathology of serial errors that propagate through the decision process, that may be traceable ultimately, by historians in two or three years, but are perhaps identifiable and can lead to a pathway in the crisis. The original restructuring debate itself was quite a historical. It was dominated by a context in which critical dissent was dismissed, and we run the risk of repeating that mistake today.
Let's start with what everybody knows; and I put the word "knows" in quotes. We all read the papers. By my count, we're down to one or two errors per story, from about five or six as recently as three or four weeks ago. Everyone knows California has excessive energy costs. And the hot tub is the symbol of choice in the national news media, and particularly, if you're from the northwest, you will, "not freeze in the dark, so Californians can use their hot tubs." Second, we know that California didn't build enough power plants to keep up with demand growth. Third, we know that California has excessive environmental regulations, and that has stopped new power plants from being permitted or constructed. We know that a big part of the problem is that California froze retail rates below market prices, and that has driven utilities to bankruptcy.

The 3rd ACR was part of the 24th Infantry Division's drive to the Eurphrates in "Desert Storm" of 1991. It is a neat package of all the army's heavy systems, with tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, Paladin howitzers, AH-64 Apaches, and other equipment. 3rd ACR is intended to be deployed on short notice, with equipment pre-positioned in Middle Eastern and Central European regions.
