    Bootcity.com Case Study
Boot City is click and mortar western apparel store located in Lubbock, TX. The best little western store in Texas is about to become the best little western store online. Bootcity.com sells Justin Boots Ariat Boots and just about any other brand of boot you might want. Bootcity has been online since July of 1996. SEOTA was engaged to redesign the site and at the same time improve the eCommrece and search engine performance. URL: http://www.bootcity.com Redesigned: April 2004 Optimized April 2004 and Ongoing Objective Improve sales by 300% and Increase traffic by 500%
    Our Approach
In order to provide such a huge improvement in sales and store traffic we had to architect the web site to solve some basic catalog issues as well as improve usability and search engine friendliness. We applied our basic SEO strategy to the content and link structure of the site in order to make it keyword rich and easy to navigate. We used data from the new SQL Server catalog to dynamically display page titles, meta tags and content. As a final step we garnered inbound links (backlinks) from other relevant web sites.
The site was then manually submitted to the search engines.

    and the politics of gender
by Bob Blakey There are more differences between the American Old West and its Canadian counterpart than lawless frontier towns and the North West Mounted Police.
There are the starkly contrasting rights of single women to acquire land. Those experiences were remarkably different, for reasons not yet fully explained.
As the West was opened up, she says, the United States government permitted single women to acquire homesteads, which they did in the thousands. In Canada, while men were given 160-acre parcels just by registering and making improvements, unmarried women were denied that right. Early indications are that women on this side of the border were seen in a different light, she says.

Back to the Wild West of Anbar Province
By Bill Roggio In an article titled “Insurgents Flourish in Iraq's Wild West” , the Los Angeles Times offers a bleak assessment of the availability of Coalition and Iraqi forces in the Anbar province. While the Marines involved in Operation Matador were able to easily sweep through Western Iraq and kill and capture al Qaeda members, they have not established a long term presence and may have left the area open to re-infiltration by al Qaeda. Yet as soon as the operation [Matador] concluded, the Marines crossed back over the Euphrates River and left no U.S. or Iraqi government presence in the region — generally considered a major mistake in counterinsurgency warfare. "It's classically the wrong thing to do," said Kalev Sepp, a professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., who last fall was a counterinsurgency advisor to Army Gen. George W. Casey, the top U.S. general in Iraq. "Sending 1,000 men north of the Euphrates does what? Sometimes these things can be counterproductive, because you just end up shooting things up and then leaving the area." Military officials in Iraq and Washington said there was little reason to expect that insurgent fighters would not return to the villages.

    http://www.tgarden.demon.co.uk/writings/articles/2005/050717lib.html
Space: Global Commons or Wild West?
by Tim Garden In just a century, mankind has advanced from the Wright brothers' flight to landing a probe on Saturn's moon, Titan. Just as commercial aircraft development has been accelerated by military exploitation, so space technology has been funded by defence needs. The Soviet Union launch of Sputnik 1, in 1957, spurred the United States to enormous efforts to show that it was technologically superior. In 1962, President Kennedy pledged to have a man on the Moon before the end of the decade; and on 20 July 1969, Neil Armstrong spoke to the world from the Sea of Tranquility. Since then public awareness of progress in space technology has been fitful. Astronauts have grown old waiting to explore new worlds, and less glamorous systems have filled the crowded orbits around the Earth. Space is a growing issue in international politics. Civil and military projects jostle for launch bookings, bandwidth and orbital slots. The idealists argue for international sharing and cite the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which declared that: "the exploration and use of outer space shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all mankind." The treaty banned nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction from being placed in orbit or beyond. It did not however prevent the military use of space. Satellites provide intelligence using sensors across the electromagnetic spectrum. Weapons find their targets with GPS data. It is now routine for a pilot sitting in a bunker in Florida to fire a missile from a drone flying over Iraq. Orbiting systems make this possible.

The virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, infects humans as well as birds and other animals. Over 60 cases of illness and seven deaths were reported in New York in 1999. So far this year in Maryland, the virus has been isolated in birds, but no cases of human illness have been reported [see accompanying article for prevention tips].

    West Nile Virus Vaccine
Thomas P. Monath*, Juan Arroyo, Chuck Miller and Farshad Guirakhoo Acambis Inc., 38 Sidney Street, Cambridge Massachusetts 02139, USA Abstract: Within the past 5 years, West Nile encephalitis has emerged as an important disease of humans and horses in Europe. In 1999, the disease appeared for the first time in the northeastern United States. West Nile virus (a mosquito-borne flavivirus) has flourished in the North American ecosystem and is expected to expand its geographic range. In this review, the rationale for a human and veterinary vaccine is presented and a novel approach for rapid development of a molecularly- defined, live, attenuated vaccine is described. The technology (ChimeriVax™) is applicable to the development of vaccines against all flaviviruses, and products against Japanese encephalitis (a close relative of West Nile) and dengue are in or are nearing clinical trials, respectively. ChimeriVax™ vaccines utilize the safe and effective vaccine against the prototype flavivirus -yellow fever 17D- as a live vector. Infectious clone technology is used to replace the genes encoding the pre-membrane (prM) and envelope (E) protein of yellow fever 17D vaccine with the corresponding genes of the target virus (e.g. West Nile). The resulting chimeric virus contains the antigens responsible for protection against West Nile but retains the replication efficiency of yellow fever 17D. The ChimeriVax™ technology is well-suited to the rapid development of a West Nile vaccine, and clinical trials could begin as early as mid-2002. Other approaches to vaccine development are briefly reviewed.

Big Trouble: A Murder in a Small Western Town Sets Off a Struggle for the Soul of America By J. Anthony Lukas American history is widely interpreted as the pre-eminent refutation of Karl Marx's social and political theories. Ironically, though, it was in the United States, between 1890 and 1915, that something very close to Marx's vision of class warfare unfoldednot, as Marx might have predicted, in the nation's industrial centers or financial capitals, but in the mining and logging camps of the West. Lacking a sizable middle class of farmers and shopkeepers (who would arrive only after World War I), and undergoing intense and rapid capitalist development, large portions of Colorado, Nevada, and Idaho became sharply polarized along class lines"labor in one camp, the employers in another, no in-between camp, with government a football between the two," according to the final volume of John R. Commons and associates' venerable History of Labor in the United States Western miners and loggers defended themselves and their jobs with rifles and dynamite. They also created some of the most incendiary labor organizations ever seen, above all the Western Federation of Miners. Their employers were no less violence-prone. Timber magnates and mine owners deployed armed Pinkertons and strikebreakers as if they were baronial armies. When private force failed, employers persuaded local and state governments to suspend due process of law, arrest suspected troublemakers, initiate mass deportations, and crush strikes with National Guardsmenusing what Commons and his associates called all "the paraphernalia of dictatorship."
