Amir Abdul Rahman, Karzai and the Wild West Dr. G. Rauf Roashan Any keen student of history would easily find parallels in the era of the last 19th century Amir of Afghanistan and those of contemporary Karzai times. An even keener observer would extend the parallel also to the American Wild West era of the rule of the gun, Billy the Kid, local sheriffs, US marshals and gunmen of all sorts. During an adventurous period in the life of Abdul Rahman Khan towards the end of the 19th century and before becoming King of Afghanistan, his political intentions and achievements became subject of much contemplation. Not unlike Karzai who lived in Pakistan, he too, lived abroad, in Russia in self-exile. Not unlike Karzai, he too, entered the country armed only with resolve and surrounded by only a few supporters. In a detailed description of his life and adventures in a book called the "Crown of Histories" Abdul Rahman Khan himself has described the social and political atmosphere of Afghanistan then, which in many ways are similar to that of contemporary Afghanistan of the Karzai era. Now all of the above in many ways resemble the situation in contemporary Afghanistan where more than two decades of war broke down the foundation of civil society in the country and gave rise to emergence of divisive trends as well as devastating infighting for power based on religion, language and ethnicity as well as warlordism. Foreign intervention was not unlike the era of Amir Abdul Rahman Khan.

German Who Brought Cowboys To the Rhineland Wins Fans in U.S.
By C ECILIE R OHWEDDER
Staff Reporter of T HE W ALL S TREET J OURNAL
LUBBOCK, Texas He is the best-selling German author of all time way ahead of Goethe, Hermann Hesse or Thomas Mann. His detailed descriptions of cowboys and Indians, prairies and canyons, written to great acclaim in the 19th century, shaped what generations of Germans have thought of the U.S. Because of him, Germans are wild about the West, and many never lose their love for Winnetou, a brave Apache chief, and Old Shatterhand, a German-born frontiersman, who are the fictional heroes of his novels. Now, long after his death in 1912, the cult of Karl May is finally coming to the U.S. Texas Tech University here in Lubbock recently held a symposium on the writer and plans a Karl May archive. Language students read his works in German. At the University of North Dakota, Indian Studies classes include Winnetou movies. Dana College in Blair, Neb., runs a student exchange with Bad Segeberg, a German town that produces Karl May plays outdoors every summer. A May exhibit is touring Arizona. And the pioneer museum in Crosbyton, a tiny cowboy town near Lubbock, has dedicated a display to him complete with 55 books, a German flag and a film poster showing Winnetou on a white horse.

16. NWHC: West Nile Virus Project
The west Nile Virus is an insectborne virus that had not been reported in on three new ambitious research studies to investi gate WNV in wild birds.
http://www.nwhc.usgs.gov/research/west_nile/west_nile.html
[Text-only Version] West Nile Virus Public Health New Research West Nile Virus (WNV) has spread rapidly across North America, affecting thousands of birds, horses, and humans, since it was discovered in the Western hemisphere. In five years, WNV has swept from the New York City region in 1999 to almost all of the continental U.S. , 7 Canadian provinces, and throughout Mexico and parts of the Caribbean by 2004.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is committed to understanding the effects of WNV. To do that and better answer the remaining questions surrounding the disease, USGS scientists are collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to learn more about the ecology of WNV.
Collaborations between USGS, the CDC, and other agencies to study this disease have produced remarkable results in the five short years since its arrival in New York City , but less understood are the ways WNV is affecting wildlife populations, particularly wild birds, a major reservoir of the virus. The NWHC is working on three new ambitious research studies to investi gate WNV in wild birds.

    Disputed
Most commentators today recognize the distinction of the Census Bureau for a number of reasons including ... examples being laws restricting sex toys.
I've spent the last couple of days trying to find any source that defines the American West using these criteria. Admittedly I'm an amateur, but I found no such source. I did find the American West to be an academic study area, with many museums and heritage centers scattered across the country (from Oklahoma to California), and that it is a major part of the tourism industry in those many states. It would seem to me that if most commentators today (or even many or some ) were true, I would have at least found a trace. A reputable source would be helpful if this section is to be verified.

Westerns are art works – films literature sculpture television and radio shows, and paintings – devoted to telling stories set in the American West , often portraying it in a romanticized light. While the Western has been popular throughout the history of movies, it has begun to diminish in importance as the United States progresses farther away from the period depicted . Justus D. Lash La Rue Westerns, by definition, are set in the American West , almost always in the 19th century , generally between the Antebellum period and the turn of the century. Many incorporate the Civil War into the plot, or into the background, although the west was not touched by the war to the extent the east was. However, their setting may extend further back to the time of the American colonial period or forward to the mid-twentieth century. They may also range geographically from
