White House: Arafat has yet to earn Bush's trust
WASHINGTON (CNN) Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat still has to earn President Bush's confidence on the issues of governing by the rule of law and cracking down on corruption as well as curbing terrorism, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Friday. He also said that while a "ministerial meeting" Secretary of State Colin Powell is organizing for the summer is not expected to produce a peace agreement for the Middle East, it "will be a very helpful way to explore ideas to create peace" and to bring together people who have ideas on how peace can be achieved. Asked if the president believes the Palestinian Authority is plagued by corruption, Fleischer said, "As part of the president's vision of Israel and Palestine living side by side, two states living in security and peace, a major part of that is a commitment by the Palestinian people to have a state that is governed by the rule of law, by democracy, by transparency, by the lack of corruption. "The president does have concerns about the Palestinian Authority, and making certain that the Palestinian people have a government that is worthy of them."

White House to push fast track, faith-based initiatives
WASHINGTON (CNN) The White House will step up pressure to win passage of fast-track trading authority and the president's faith-based initiative proposal after a pledge this week from House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Illinois, to move those items to the House floor within a month. Hastert promised the action during a White House meeting late Wednesday. The session was wedged between two higher profile White House meetings, Tuesday with Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, and Thursday with newly minted Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-South Dakota. According to White House and congressional sources, Hastert and Bush focused intently on the trade issue and the president urged swift passage. Hastert vowed to bring fast-track trade authority which would allow a president to negotiate trade deals and submit them to Congress with no possibility of amendment to the House floor in the first week of July. A proposal for faith-based initiative tax deductions will come to the floor earlier, during the week of June 24, Hastert told the president.

to download a free copy. December 6, 2004—The manipulation of computer voting machines in the recent presidential election and the funding of programmers who were involved in the operation are tied to an intricate web of shady off-shore financial trusts and companies, shady espionage operatives, Republican Party politicians close to the Bush family, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) contract vehicles. An exhaustive investigation has turned up a link between current Florida Republican Representative Tom Feeney, a customized Windows-based program to suppress Democratic votes on touch screen voting machines, a Florida computer services company with whom Feeney worked as a general counsel and registered lobbyist while he was Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, and top level officials of the Bush administration. According to a notarized affidavit signed by Clint Curtis, while he was employed by the NASA Kennedy Space Center contractor, Yang Enterprises, Inc., during 2000, Feeney solicited him to write a program to "control the vote." At the time, Curtis was of the opinion that the program was to be used for preventing fraud in the in the 2002 election in Palm Beach County, Florida. His mind was changed, however, when the true intentions of Feeney became clear: the computer program was going to be used to suppress the Democratic vote in counties with large Democratic registrations.

Fleischer predicts GOP won't lose seats

First lady Laura Bush gets a kiss from the president during a campaign stop Monday in Iowa. Story Tools
DALLAS, Texas (CNN) President Bush's spokesman signaled some optimism Monday, boldly predicting Republicans will not lose seats in Congress on Election Day, a departure from what traditionally happens to the president's party in the off-year elections. "I think the president is heartened by the fact that he appears likely to have broken the historical trend against incumbents in their first terms," Ari Fleischer, White House press secretary, told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Missouri, the president's second stop in his final daylong campaign effort. "This is a very serious, significant development," Fleischer said. "All signs give a lot of reason to be optimistic that the trend can be broken."

White House, prosecutors offer dueling pre-trial memos
House prosecutors outline their case in memorandum
January 11, 1999
Web posted at: 6:23 p.m. EST (2323 GMT) WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, January 11) In a day of dueling, pre-trial legal memoranda, the White House and House prosecutors offered sharply contrasting views Monday of President Bill Clinton's actions in the Monica Lewinsky sex-and-perjury scandal. Clinton answers Senate summons
Trial memo from House managers
Clinton's legal team rejected the perjury and obstruction of justice charges against the president in an answer to a Senate summons, saying they are not true and do not warrant his removal from office. But House prosecutors said the evidence against Clinton "when viewed as a unified whole, overwhelmingly supports both charges" against the president. The White House skipped a chance at least for now to file a motion seeking to dismiss the case. Opening arguments in Clinton's impeachment trial begin Thursday.
