P resident George Bush (this article was first published July 1989) can take modern conveniences for granted. The White House is like a super hotel that contains all the high-tech appliances available. It's part of the perks that go along with being the leader of the free world. And among the least of his worries is whether the plumbing works. But the President's home at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue hasn't always been a posh address. In fact many presidents had to tolerate primitive living conditions, including poor plumbing and heating. The White House had a reputation for being behind the times in domestic improvements. Congress in part can be blamed for that situation, because although the White House is a private residence for the President and his family, it is public property, and appropriation decisions were made on Capitol Hill. Frequently, the necessary expenditures weren't allotted, and the building decayed rapidly in the first half of the 20th century. Before its major renovation during the Harry S. Truman

November 22, 2001 G eorge W. Bush now appears to have claimed the most powerful office in the world by blocking a court-ordered recount of votes in Florida that likely would have elected Al Gore to be president of the United States. Click for Printable Version A document, revealed by Newsweek, indicates that the Florida recount that was stopped last year by five Republicans on the U.S. Supreme Court would have taken into account so-called “overvotes” that heavily favored Gore. If those “overvotes” were counted, as now it appears they would have been, Gore would have carried Florida regardless of what standard of chad – dimpled, hanging, punched-through – was used in counting the so-called “undervotes,” according to an examination of those ballots by a group of leading news organizations. In other words, Bush lost not only the national popular vote by more than a half million ballots, but he would have lost the key state of Florida and thus the presidency, if Florida’s authorities had been allowed to count the votes that met the state’s legal requirement of demonstrating the clear intent of the voter.

About the GOTWH CD-ROM
Send feedback about this site to CREST The Greening of the White House is a series of environmental upgrades occurring at the White House complex, which consists of the Executive Residence, the Old Executive Office Building, and the White House Grounds. After a feasibility study in July 1993, measures began to be implemented to reduce pollution, save energy, protect water quality, improve comfort, and save money at the White House. The CD-ROM consists of a documentary of the actions that the White House has taken to date, as well as a wealth of general information on energy and environment topics. The general information includes many actions you can take yourself to improve the environment while making your home and office more comfortable, healthy, safe, and productive, and less expensive to maintain. This section of Solstice contains almost all of the information from the CD-ROM, with the notable exceptions of digital videos and a few interactive sections. At any time, you can click on the Greening of the White House button at the top or bottom of the screen to return to this page.

The White House
The White House, since 1800 the official residence of the president of the United States, is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. The winner of a 1792 competition for its design was the Irish-American architect James Hoban, whose dignified neoclassical plan was a virtual copy of a project in James Gibbs's Book of Architecture (1728). As early as 1807, Benjamin Latrobe, the principal architect of the Capitol , sought to improve the building by preparing designs for pavilions at either end (added that year in collaboration with Thomas Jefferson), for interior alterations, and for porticos on both fronts. After the building was burned (1814) by the British, it was reconstructed (1815-17) by Hoban, who also added (1826) the semicircular South Portico that Latrobe had proposed and completed (1829) Latrobe's rectangular North Portico. The White House was extensively remodeled (1902) by the firm of McKim, Mead, and White, which also added the East Gallery and the Executive Office Wing. Between 1948 and 1952 the building, deemed structurally unsound, was gutted and its interior structure replaced with steel framing, within which the original rooms were reconstructed. Since 1961 each First Lady has contributed to a continuing effort to refurbish the interior. The resultant enhancement has made the White House a veritable museum of decorative arts of the first quarter of the 19th century. This site has it's own Mosaic information.

WASHINGTON - After two days of questions, the White House said Tuesday that President Bush continues to have confidence in Karl Rove, the presidential adviser at the center of the investigation into the leak identifying a female CIA officer. Bush did not respond to a reporter's question Tuesday about whether he would fire Rove, as Democrats demanded, in keeping with a June 2004 pledge to dismiss any leakers of Valerie Plame's identity. At a White House briefing later, spokesman Scott McClellan was pressed about Rove's future. "Any individual who works here at the White House has the confidence of the president. They wouldn't be working here at the White House if they didn't have the president's confidence," McClellan said.

Administration considering how to strike back
Bush and Vice President Cheney attend a National Security meeting Wednesday. WASHINGTON (CNN) The White House said Wednesday it has "reasonable and credible" information that the White House and Air Force One were targets of Tuesday's terrorist attack on the nation's capital. "We have real and credible information that the airplane that landed at the Pentagon was originally intended for the White House," White House press secretary Ari Fleischer said in a late Wednesday afternoon briefing. Fleischer also said Bush was pleased NATO had invoked "Article 5," which states that any attack on an alliance member is an attack on the alliance as a whole. "It is a message of solidarity," Fleischer said, and "indicates a unified response." He refused to quantify what that means.
