The price of gas: Bush found himself asking for help from the Saudi crown prince
By By Holly Bailey and Richard Wolffe Newsweek May 9 issue - George Voinovich is not your typical Bush loyalist. A self-styled deficit hawk, the former Cleveland mayor and Ohio governor is so frugal that he once fished a penny out of a urinal in the Statehouse. To the White House, his independent spirit should have come as no surprise: he split with his party over the estate tax in 2000 and he opposed the size of Bush's tax cuts three years later. Yet when it came to the prickly question of John Bolton's nomination as U.N. ambassador, the president's team assumed Voinovich would fall into line. The warning signs were there if anyone had looked for them. About two weeks before senators were set to vote on Bolton's nomination, Voinovich "grilled" Bolton for an hour in private, according to officials familiar with the session, asking "tough questions" about allegations that Bolton sought to force out an intelligence analyst who disagreed with him. Yet in subsequent days, nobody at the White House asked the senator directly about Bolton. Others got the full-court press: Lincoln Chafee, the wavering Rhode Island Republican, took phone calls from Bush's chief of staff Andy Card and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. But the administration didn't contact Voinovich directly until he announced to the world that he wasn't comfortable voting for Bolton. As the explosive Senate meeting ended, Matthew Kirk, the president's Senate liaison, ran up to Voinovich to tell him, "We'll get you whatever you need."

White House 'more confident' U.N. will pass Iraq resolution
Story Tools
WASHINGTON (CNN) The Bush administration is feeling "more confident" that it is "pretty close" to having the votes to pass a tough new U.N. resolution calling on Iraq to disarm or face serious consequences, a senior administration official told CNN on Friday. The official, who asked not to be identified, said the United States believes it is close to having enough votes even without approval from France or Russia, two permanent members of the U.N. Security Council with veto power. SPECIAL REPORT War Tracker On the Scene Map U.S. Iraq ... Special Report The administration is heartened because although the two nations have not backed the U.S.-British proposal, they have not threatened to veto it, either. The focus now, the official said, is trying to get the French and Russians "on board" with the resolution. Nine "yes" votes from the 15 nations on the Security Council and no vetoes from any of the five permanent members are required to pass a resolution.

You can see the video here QUESTION: Scott, can I ask you this: Did Karl Rove commit a crime? MCCLELLAN: Again, David, this is a question relating to a ongoing investigation, and you have my response related to the investigation. And I don't think you should read anything into it other than: We're going to continue not to comment on it while it's ongoing. Advertisement
QUESTION: Do you stand by your statement from the fall of 2003, when you were asked specifically about Karl and Elliot Abrams and Scooter Libby, and you said, "I've gone to each of those gentlemen, and they have told me they are not involved in this"? QUESTION: Do you stand by that statement? MCCLELLAN: And if you will recall, I said that, as part of helping the investigators move forward on the investigation, we're not going to get into commenting on it. That was something I stated back near that time as well. QUESTION: Scott, this is ridiculous. The notion that you're going to stand before us, after having commented with that level of detail, and tell people watching this that somehow you've decided not to talk.

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, October 7) Saying he wants to reverse the American public's "lack of spirit" after the scandals of the Clinton years, Donald Trump announced he will form a committee Friday to explore pursuit of the 2000 Reform Party presidential nomination. In this story:

"We're going to take a very good, strong look at it," said the flamboyant billionaire New York real estate developer and casino owner on Thursday's "Larry King Live" on CNN. He insisted, however, that he will run only if he's convinced he can actually capture the White House. "If I felt I couldn't win, I would not run," said Trump. "I've got a lot a lot to lose ... I'm the biggest developer in the hottest city in the world." Thursday night, Trump had dinner with Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, the Reform Party's senior elected official. Ventura has reportedly been encouraging Trump's candidacy to blunt the potential candidacy of conservative commentator Pat Buchanan.

Newspaper: Butterfly ballot cost Gore White House
In this story: Palm Beach at heart of recount Ballot designed to help elderly RELATED STORIES, SITES WEST PALM BEACH, Florida (CNN) Voters confused by Palm Beach County's butterfly ballot cost Al Gore the presidency, The Palm Beach Post concluded Sunday. The newspaper's review of discarded ballots found Gore lost 6,607 votes when voters marked more than one name on the county's "butterfly ballot." A leading Republican called the finding "speculation." Voters who marked Gore's name and that of another candidate totaled more than 10 times the winning margin Bush received to claim Florida's 25 electoral votes and the White House, the Post concluded. The newspaper said the result was "an indictment of the butterfly ballot, political experts and partisan observers agree." The newspaper's review of the overvotes found 5,330 Palm Beach County residents invalidated their ballots by punching chads for Gore and Reform Party candidate Pat Buchanan. The hole voters punched for Buchanan was located just above Gore's on the two-page ballot.

Kerry 'retools' with formal announcement tour
Retired Gen. Wesley Clark says he's a Democrat. Story Tools RELATED Interactive: The Democratic field
Manchester, New Hampshire (CNN) Retired Gen. Wesley Clark on Wednesday ended the suspense about one aspect of his political future, but he left in place the big question he himself has raised about a run for the White House. In an exclusive interview with me on CNN's "Inside Politics," Clark said he's concluded he's a Democrat. "I like the message the party has, I like what it stands for. To start, it's a party that stands for internationalism, it's a party that stands for ordinary men and women, it's a party that stands for fair play and equity and justice and common sense and reasonable dialogue," Clark said. "It's a party that has had a great tradition in our country, and I'm very attracted to it and that's the party I belong to." Clark added that GOP positions on the Iraq war and on tax cuts have caused him to lean left. He acknowledged this decision puts him one step closer to what he called "closure" in the matter of whether he'll run for the Democratic nomination for president. But Clark insisted he's still thinking it through.

Stuart Rothenberg: White House takes Gilmore's scalp
WASHINGTON (CNN) If you believe that Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore resigned as chairman of the Republican National Committee because he wanted to spend more time with his family, then I have some oceanfront property in Nebraska I'd like to sell you. In fact, Gilmore was pushed out of his RNC post by the White House, which has grown worried about the Committee's effectiveness and concerned about its responsiveness. Gilmore, 52, announced his decision to depart the RNC at a Friday morning general staff meeting. In a statement released by the committee, Gilmore cited the "countless celebrations and baseball games" that he missed with his two boys, and the "cherished and valuable time" that he missed with his wife. Given the extensive time commitment that his job required, and the increased commitment necessary over the next year, Gilmore announced that he will resign in mid-January. Nobody ever likes to admit that they were showed the door, but Gilmore was. I'm sure he missed family obligations over the years, and I'm certainly willing to believe that Gilmore would like to spend more time with his family. But none of that has anything to do with his departure from the RNC.
