Birds of Prey
Birds of prey are animal hunters and most catch their prey alive, killing it quickly with their strong feet or talons, and, if necessary, tearing it into smaller pieces to swallow. Eagles, falcons, hawks, buzzards, kites and caracaras also find dead animals, known as carrion, to eat. Vultures rarely kill their own food, but tidy up after the kills of bigger mammal predators such as lions.
Great Grey Owl
Birds of prey, also known as raptors, come in many sizes. Some are specialist killers, like the Peregrine Falcon where individuals tend to take only one kind of bird. More versatile hunters such as the Kestrel will take any small mammals, birds, reptiles or even beetles, as they are available.
Burrowing Owl
Owls
Owls are another group known under the title of Birds of Prey. Owls tend to take most of their prey from the ground and therefore feed mostly on mammals, but smaller owl species will take roosting small birds and invertebrates. Most owls are nocturnal, hunting at night for smaller prey to the diurnal or day-hunting hawks.
Because of their different activity time clock the owls are not competing with the hawks for the same food animals at the same time and can therefore co-exist.

May 20, 2003 This week in Budapest, Hungary, an international gathering of scientists will explore how to save a creature that itself symbolizes doom: the vulture. At the 6th World Conference on Birds of Prey and Owls, several sessions will focus on the Oriental white-backed vulture, Gyps bengalensis , once the most common bird of prey in Asia and possibly in the world. Vultures used to be as numerous as "pigeons in cities of the United States," says Rick Watson, a raptor ecologist and director of international programs at the Peregrine Fund in Boise, Idaho. During the last decade, populations of bengalensis Gyps indicus and Gyps tenuirostris bengalensis is well on its way to extinction."

Traditionally, taxonomists (those who classify living things based on evolutionary relationships) have looked at bird characteristics such as skeletal structure, plumage, and bill shape to determine which birds have a shared evolutionary history. More recently, scientists have turned to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)—the genetic information found in the cells of all living organisms—for clues about relationships among birds. DNA is useful to bird taxonomists because closely related birds have more similar DNA than do groups of birds that are distantly related. DNA comparisons have challenged some of scientists’ previous ideas about relationships among birds. For example, these studies have revealed that vultures of the Americas are more closely related to

Given all the birds of prey in Africa, the offering here is regrettably sparse. Although many of the birds are quite large, they also tend to occupy the tops of tall trees and fly at great heights. Thus, too often the photograph shows only a small silhouette that is barely recognizable, if at all. Having said that, I did manage to capture a few. One of the most commonly seen birds of prey is the African fish eagle , a majestic bird somewhat similar in appearance to the American bald eagle. Fish eagles inhabit tall trees overlooking bodies of water. As their name implies, they feed primarily on fish, swooping down and taking those that swim too close to the surface. The fish eagle's frequent screeching call is one of the distinctive sounds of Africa. There are a number of other eagles in Africa as well, including the commonly seen

An introduction to Birds of Prey
Raptors are one of the most successful and widely distributed bird groups in the world. Raptors are found on every continent (except Antarctica) and in virtually every habitat type on the planet.
There are currently two main groups or orders: Falconiformes (diurnal or daytime raptors) and Strigiformes (owls). Their variety is stunning, with more than 300 species of diurnal raptors and more than 200 species of owls.
Before going into the various groups, what is a 'raptor'? What does it mean? The word raptor comes from a Latin word, raptare , meaning to seize or plunder. It is a general term used to cover all birds of prey. Given the highly predatory nature of many birds in this group, it is a very appropriate word to use. There are four main orders
1) New World Vultures ( Catharditae in the order Ciconiiformes
2a) Hawks and relations ( Accipitridae in the order Accipitriformes
2b) Ospreys ( Panionidae, also in the order Accipitriformes

Eagles
Eagles are large-bodied birds with large, broad wings, short tails, and heavy, curved bills. The white head and tail of the adult bald eagle is unmistakable, but juveniles are mottled brown and white. Hawks
Hawks come in many shapes and sizes. The commonly-seen red-tailed hawk is recognized in flight by its large body, rounded wings, and fanned red tail. Watch for them perching on trees and fence posts along Michigan’s highways. Falcons
Falcons are streamlined birds that have long, pointed wings and fairly long tails. The blue jay-sized American kestrel (also called sparrow hawk) is the smallest American falcon. These handsome birds are commonly seen on telephone lines along roadways. Vultures
Vultures (also called buzzards) are large birds with extremely long, broad wings and no feathers on their heads or necks. The turkey vulture is easily recognized in flight by the way it holds its wings in a V-shape and glides in wide, lazy circles. top

Birds of Prey at Londolozi Maxine Scott was the inaugural winner of the prize for the best field project in CC Africa's Ecological Journal . Here we present a shortened version of her work (adapted by Chris Roche) that appeared in the first edition of this unique publication. This is the first in a series highlighting field projects conducted by rangers at the various CC Africa lodges across southern and east Africa. Environmental indicators
Birds of prey, as the top of the food chain and being sensitive to changes in environment, which affect prey availability, serve as good indicators of the health of a particular ecosystem. A four-year study of birds of prey, or raptors, was conducted by Rob Simmons in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, of which Londolozi is a part. The study determined the density and diversity of raptors within the reserve to be very high. Simmons' study was conducted over the period 1988-1992 with this in mind. In an attempt to investigate any change in raptor diversity and densities and therefore a potential change in ecosystem health, I set out to document and monitor the situation at Londolozi in 1998.
