Review by Philip Hunter It is sometimes hard to recall that only two years ago it was difficult to find a book on HTML in a bookshop at all. I bought my first commercially produced HTML primer in October 1995 from a choice of two. Now they are overflowing from the shelves (literally in the case of many branches of Waterstones, where overabundance is deemed to add atmosphere). Close inspection of these books however is disappointing. Many HTML primers are little more than fifty pages of HTML tags and tips, padded out with a recycled resume of the Internet, information about search engines, browsers, plus a large list of links to 'sites of interest' and, if a hastily assembled CD is attached, containing page templates, links, and a handful of browsers, the price can hit the fifty pound mark. There have been some excellent and reasonably priced HTML primers which have come along, such as Ian Graham's HTML Sourcebook (covering the ill-fated HTML 3.0), but these have been rare.

VRML Datablade Module for Informix Dynamic Server
Project description:
Goal
As today’s world wide information networks are exploding with a huge amount of complex and weakly structured multimedia data collections it becomes ever more important to provide proper visualization methods for the user interfaces of information systems. Because of the steadily growing availability of cheap computing power in desktop machines, 3D perspective visualization gains more and more significance in this context. By means of perspective visualization, users are provided with an overview visualization and are, at the same time, enabled to focus on a smaller part of the data set in more detail. By now the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) - a description language for 3D visualization - has rapidly established itself as a widely accepted standard for the presentation of realtime 3D environments. VRML supports the on-line application area of the World Wide Web as well as off-line applications in general. Therefore, it is ideal for the integration of interactive 3D visualization with arbitrary applications. Within this context we see a growing demand for a tight integration of VRML technology with already widely spread enterprise level database technology, to satisfy the growing visualization demands of professional office and business applications. At the same time modern object relational database management systems (ORDBMS) provide a basis for extending a database with user defined data types and functions. These ORDBMS are therefore predestined to integrate external technologies such as VRML.

E-learning Software Tools and Products: A review
The numbers of tools that are available for e-learning development are far too many these days. Media creation tools, web publishing tools, online conferencing tools, to multimedia authoring tools, integrated learning environments, collaboration and management tools are just a few such software tools.
Digital multimedia creation tools
Media types can include text, images, graphics, sound, animation, video and virtual reality. The only constraint in using multimedia in e-learning development on the Internet is bandwidth. Heavy multimedia can slow down your site.
Text creation tools
Graphic and Image creation tools
Images are useful in not just improving the look of content, but also aid in easy understanding of difficult topics. Graphics can be scanned and then imported to the web in various formats (GIF, JPEG, BMP and TIFF formats). Image authoring tools that are used to modify and edit images are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, Freehand, SuperPaint, Fractal Design Painter and so on. Audio formats on the web are WAV, AU, MPEG, MPEG2, MIDI, RA and they can be played using audio players that are usually bundled along with operating systems. If one is interested in creating audio files, then Macromedia's Shockwave, RealAudio server, and Voxware's ToolVox are the most popular. Video formats for the web are AVI, QuickTime and MPEG and can be played using video players that are supported by common web browsers. Macromedia Director, Moviestar Maker are some of the professional authoring tools to create video.

Introduction These Wide Area Network (WAN) Internet and Intranet Publishing Guidelines are applicable to all employees and students of the Sequoia Union High School District (SUHSD). They provide some specific guidance on implementing School Board Policy with respect to information which is posted to network servers whether they provide world-wide or internal access. The SUHSD currently maintains Internet and Intranet servers on its premises which are configured and administered by its employees. The guidelines herein pertain to the 'content' of information posted on these and all future servers within the SUHSD's domain. This includes all information servers at school sites, contracted for from commercial entities, or private ones used for SUHSD information. This document is written in accordance with SUHSD School Board Approved Policies. These guidelines are an implementation instrument of those policies. In the event of any conflicts between material contained herein and School Board approved policy, the School Board Policy takes precedence. Applicable policies include BP4040(a) and AR 4040(a). Servers that make information available via a computer network will collectively be referred to as "web servers" with a distinction being made between "Internet" and "Intranet" as needed. At this time these servers use the http, tcp/ip, ftp, ppp and other protocols for communications. These guidelines are applicable as indicated here regardless of underlying technologies or protocols used.

    Introduction
For years, those of us who use technology in our teaching have been promising that technology (programmed instruction, video, computers) would revolutionize the way people learn. And for years, in all innocence, we've been kidding ourselves. This year, however, seems different. The arrival of the World Wide Web signals the beginning of some fundamental changes in how teaching, training, and self-directed learning will occur at all ages and stages of life. In the previous chapter, Patty Crowell described some strategies for teaching about the internet, and for integrating internet use into the teaching of other subjects. This chapter picks up that second thread and carries it into more detail. Specifically, you'll learn how to use the World Wide Web as a vehicle for disseminating course materials and for creating active learning experiences within a classroom-based course. You'll also learn how to build on those experiences and incrementally move towards being able to deliver your courses to those beyond your classroom walls.
    Sections
The chapter is divided into the following sections:
  • Distance Teaching: The Old Paradigm
  • Introducing the Web
  • Creating and Publishing Web Documents
  • Teaching and Learning with the Web
  • The Future of Net-Based Training To pursue the ideas described in this chapter, your company or campus needs to be connected to the internet. Throughout this chapter I will refer to resources available on the World Wide Web. These resources will appear in

    Introduction
It seems that wherever you go in bookshops, there are shelves and shelves of Internet and Web books. There is now a rush of books on VRML. Meagan Smith will be presenting a workshop on the Virtual Reality Markup Language.
The workshop will cover three areas:
    • Introduction, overview and history of VRML
    • VRML Tools available and how to get them
    • How to author effective VRML Worlds - The Basic concepts and examples
The VRML workshop is set to be one of the most creative and interesting at AusWeb'96 ! Because of the nature of the workshop, ie 3D worlds, the workshop itself will be very much three dimensional. We won't be confined to flat pieces of paper but rather a fascinating cyberspace to explore.
The workshop has been designed to capture the imagination of the attendees for the full four hours (even during tea break!). Attendees are guaranteed to have a full understanding of VRML, how to get it, use it and create it.
It will be very intense and those attending will be participating for the full four hours.

Title: VRML as a superset of HTML An Approach To Consolidation
    Bruce Campbell
    Abstract:
    Introduction
The HyperText Markup Language standardizes the creation of two dimensional (2D) web pages out of text, two dimensional images, and simple user controls such as buttons and text boxes. HTML was created without considering any three dimensional (3D) location for the information produced. HTML syntax formats informational objects using short text strings called tags. On the other hand, the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) was created specifically to standardize 3D content for the web. Any object created using VRML has a location in 3D space. A user of a VRML viewer walks into a VRML scene using a mouse or keyboard and navigates as she does in the real world. VRML syntax formats informational objects using short text strings called node identifiers. VRML includes nodes for managing text strings in three dimensional space. These VRML nodes are very primitive compared with the richness and diversity of the HTML tags created specifically for advanced text formatting and presentation. It does not make sense to reinvent ASCII string formatting in the VRML standard. Instead, I suggest extending the Appearance node of the VRML 2 standard to define how to open an HTML document at a three dimensional location within a VRML scene. This paper reviews the most popular techniques web authors use to coexist HTML and VRML on a web site. Then, it suggests a way to incorporate HTML into the VRML standard as a natural extension of VRML's three dimensions. Consolidating HTML and VRML would simplify web browsers and provide a framework for immersive web navigation where the computer screen no longer exists.

Yep we need the creators...and we have managed to alianate almost all of them. WHY? Because we do not yet provide a binary format which would provide a modicum of security and protection to valuable content. If you have ever talked to ANY content developer that is by far the number one issue that we have screwed up on. Please don't start a religious argument on the need to be able to see the "source" of all content. It's simply a fact that content developers will not develop interesting valuable content unless there is a way to protect it.
