Paragraph International and Corel Corporation Link up on VRML
Corel Corporation has negotiated a licensing agreement with ParaGraph International for rights to Virtual Home Space Builder, their popular authoring/publishing technology for creating 3D VRML environments on the World Wide Web. ParaGraph's technology will be integrated into Corel's new professional suite of Web development tools, which currently include : CorelWEB.DATA, which focuses on Web tables and database creation; CorelWEB.GALLERY, their easy-to-use multimedia clipart file manager; and CorelWEB.DESIGNER, an HTML Authoring package. The increasing growth of 3D Sites on the World Wide Web has been fueled by the adoption of VRML, a cross-platform standard for transmitting and viewing 3D scenes over the Internet, and by the availability of software such as VHSB which greatly simplifies the creation of 3D Web sites. "Corel, as the leading graphics software provider for professional software developers, recognizes that 3D on the Web is growing very quickly," said Dr. Michael Cowpland, president and chief executive officer of Corel Corporation. "We feel it is crucial to give our customers the best possible tool for constructing their own 3D Internet Spaces, and think that ParaGraph's software is the leader in this respect."

Haven't had enough yet? In this appendix you'll find the URLs for all kinds of information about the World Wide Web, HTML, developing Web presentations, and locations of tools to help you write HTML documents. With this list you should be able to find just about anything you need on the Web.
Note Some of the URLs in this section refer to FTP sites. Some of these sites may be very busy during business hours, and you may not be able to immediately access 0the files. Try again during non-prime hours.
Also, some of these sites, for mysterious reasons, may be accessible through an ftp program, but not through Web browsers. If you are consistently getting refused from these sites using a browser, and you have access to an FTP program, try that program instead.

Response from readers has been phenomenal. If you visit some of the major bookstores on-line, you'll find an awful lot of praise for my books. Check out the reader reviews at Amazon.Com or the ongoing chat in the Barnes and Noble online discussion area if you care to. I don't pretend to understand what the fuss is all about but a reader who recently read an article I wrote for PC Magazine on CORBA/IIOP and distributed computing summed it up pretty well by saying "Reading your article was an eye-opening experience. You managed to introduce the whole of [distributed computing] in lucid detail. I've attempted to read entire books on the subject and this same material would have filled several chapters yet you did what they couldn't with only a few pages. You've got a new fan." My only hope is that readers continue to enjoy my work and let me know from time to time how my books and articles help them get ahead. Publishing VRML97 panoramas
VRML97 (also known as VRML 2.0) is a file format for storing 3D graphics information and transmitting it across the network. In addition to 3D geometry, animation, interaction, sound, and movies, it supports cubic panoramas, specified as a 'Background' object in the VRML .wrl file that refers to six images that make up the cubic background panorama. This document describes how to prepare a panorama to be published on the Web as a VRML file.
    Step 1: Save As... VRML
JPEG is a compressed file format that sacrifices some image quality for smaller file sizes. PNG is a high-quality "loss-less" image format; it can also compress image files, but it does not compress them as much as JPEG and compresses them in such a way that no image quality is lost. If you want precise control over the compression of your panorama images, you can do the following:
    • Save the panorama in PNG format
    • Open each of the six PNG files into a full-featured image editor, and use its features to create compressed JPEG versions of the panorama image(s).
    • Modify the VRML .wrl file using NotePad (or any other text editor) to refer to the compressed .jpg image file(s) instead of the .png file(s).

This is a great Web publishing book for intermediate users ready to learn more, and advanced users who want a quick reference book on common technologies. This book has six sections, each covering different technologies.
    • Creating Web Pages: This is the first section and it is just what it sounds like. I like that it introduces HTML and discusses ideas for page layout and site design before revealing any HTML tags. I think too many people jump into the technology and figure out site design later. (OK, I admit, I fall into this camp.) Web Graphics and Animation: Although it sounds like this section would be on just graphics, it is far richer than that. Sure it covers images, image maps and backgrounds, but it also spreads out into the "site animation" technologies like creating and embedding sound content, QuickTime, Shockwave, ActiveX and even how to code with VRML. Very cool. Enhancing Web Basics: Scripting: Basics about JavaScript, Java and VBScript. Some good information on how to work with scripts. Predictably, not much on how to write them.

NetObjects Fusion: A More Perfect Union

Introduction NetObjects Fusion @loha Book Review ... Resources Introduction As I was writing my very first column for WWWiz back in June of 1995 I noted that I had all three books in print on HTML and Web authoring, and didn't think there would be much more to say on the subject. In the next issue I pointed out that there was "a veritable explosion of new book titles on authoring for the Web." Indeed, there was a total of fifteen. Imagine. Now, a mere two years (and God knows how many Web years) later, there are over 3,000 books in print or announced for Web authors. To get the full scoop, visit the WWWiz book list In this month's column I'll have a review of NetObjects Fusion 2.0, arguably the best of the Web site development tools, a product announcement for @loha, a whimsical new email enhancement, a review of James Wallace's new book Overdrive , and a collection of brief book reviews. Net Objects Fusion 2.0 Two years ago I wrote in this column WWWiz NetObjects has carried it to the n th degree in their Fusion Web publishing program. The use of tables allows NetObjects Fusion to give precise WYSIWYG page design. But that's only part of the story. NetObjects Fusion's real strength lies in its completely site-oriented approach that gives you control over the entire site design and maintenance as well as the individual pages. This program provides you with the complete wherewithal to develop your entire Web site in a structured, or top-down, approach. Working from the outside, in (or top, down) you would develop the tree structure and links between the various pages on your site. NetObjects Fusion automatically creates all the links and navigation buttons. Then you would work on the individual page contents.

Remarkable advances in software development are making the Web a more versatile and colourful environment. The graphical interface has been the key, bringing about a dramatic shift from text-based readers to browsers that now enable sophisticated imaging, animation, choice of font styles and sizes, and an increasing level of user interactivity.
    Adobe Acrobat
Even though not designed for the purpose, Adobe Acrobat has proved to be a useful tool for Web publishing. Its advantage over HTML is that the creator of a document has control over how end users will see it. Apart from other features, its portable document format (PDF) can resist alteration - which has security implications - but end users can, with Acrobat Exchange , attach hypertext links to PDF files, move pages from one document to another, and add annotations.

    Scope and Significance
Students will work in multidisciplinary groups to build and publish three-dimensional models using Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). VRML is a language for creating interactive three-dimensional (3D) environments for distribution over the World Wide Web. The course is divided into two parts. The first half of the course will prepare students to design, implement and publish their own major collaborative VRML projects. This portion of the course will cover the fundamentals of VRML, Web publishing, the mathematical principles behind 3D modeling, group project management techniques, and 3D visualization and design. Guest speakers will be used to re-enforce the interdisciplinary nature of the course, giving students a variety of perspectives. In the second half of the course, students will collaborate to build significant self-selected VRML environments. Both the interdisciplinary teamwork and the 3D modeling aspects of this course are significant. The students' experience in interdisciplinary project development will:
    • develop project design and implementation skills

e-learning Software Tools and Products: A review
The numbers of tools that are available for e-learning development are far too many these days. Starting from media creation tools, web publishing tools, online conferencing tools, to multimedia authoring tools, integrated learning environments, collaboration and management tools and so on.
    Digital multimedia creation tools
Media types can include text, images, graphics, sound, animation, video and virtual reality. The only problem encountered in using multimedia in e-learning development on the Internet is bandwidth issues.
    Text creation tools
    Graphic and Image creation tools
Images are useful in not just improving the look of content, but also aid in easy understanding of difficult topics. Graphics can be scanned and then imported to the web in various formats (GIF, JPEG, BMP and TIFF formats). Image authoring tools that are used to modify and edit images are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, Freehand, SuperPaint, Fractal Design Painter and so on. Audio formats on the web are WAV, AU, MPEG, MPEG2, MIDI, RA and they can be played using audio players that are usually bundled along with operating systems. If one is interested in creating audio files, then Macromedia's Shockwave, RealAudio server, and Voxware's ToolVox are the most popular. Video formats for the web are AVI, QuickTime and MPEG and can be played using video players that are supported by common web browsers. Macromedia Director, Moviestar Maker are some of the professional authoring tools to create video.

Customer Review: Easy to understand book that covers it all
Several years ago I used this book to teach myself HTML. I started on page one and went through the book. By the time I went through the very clearly written chapters I had an excellent understanding of HTML. I had bought other books, but they were not organized as logically and clearly as this book is. After buying this book, the only other HTML book I ever opened was a tag book. This even has color codes and other resource materials. Because of this book (and several years of heavy practice) I now consider myself an expert HTML user, and I've been confidently able to move on to CSS, nested tables, and other fancy stuff without relying on WYSIWYG editors.
Customer Review: Wonderful HTML Tutorial for the Beginner This is the best book ever written for the beginner on HTML. It is easy to read, it contains a good reference, and it doesn't bog you down with technical detail.
