    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Seal of the Supreme Court The Supreme Court of the United States is the highest federal court in the United States of America . It consists of the Chief Justice of the United States and eight Associate Justices , who are nominated by the President and confirmed with the " advice and consent " of the Senate . Justices of the Supreme Court are appointed to serve for life, and they can only be removed by resigning or by Congress through the Impeachment process. No justice has ever been successfully removed from office by Congress, though many have retired or resigned. The Supreme Court is the only court established by the United States Constitution ; all other federal courts are created by Congress . The Court holds both original and appellate jurisdiction, but the latter is by far used more often. Like other federal courts, the Supreme Court may exercise the power of judicial review , or the power to declare federal or state laws, as well as the actions of federal and state executives, unconstitutional. The decisions of the Supreme Court may not be appealed to any other body; as Justice Robert H. Jackson

The Voting Rights Act of 1965
    The 1965 Enactment
By 1965 concerted efforts to break the grip of state disfranchisement had been under way for some time, but had achieved only modest success overall and in some areas had proved almost entirely ineffectual. The murder of voting-rights activists in Philadelphia, Mississippi, gained national attention, along with numerous other acts of violence and terrorism. Finally, the unprovoked attack on March 7, 1965, by state troopers on peaceful marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, en route to the state capitol in Montgomery, persuaded the President and Congress to overcome Southern legislators' resistance to effective voting rights legislation. President Johnson issued a call for a strong voting rights law and hearings began soon thereafter on the bill that would become the Voting Rights Act. Congress determined that the existing federal anti-discrimination laws were not sufficient to overcome the resistance by state officials to enforcement of the 15th Amendment. The legislative hearings showed that the Department of Justice's efforts to eliminate discriminatory election practices by litigation on a case-by-case basis had been unsuccessful in opening up the registration process; as soon as one discriminatory practice or procedure was proven to be unconstitutional and enjoined, a new one would be substituted in its place and litigation would have to commence anew.

    FAQs About Voting
I am a U.S. citizen living abroad. Can I vote in U.S. elections?
Yes. Generally, all U.S. citizens 18 years or older who are or will be residing outside the United States during an election period are eligible to vote by absentee ballot in any election for Federal office. Why should I vote in U.S. elections?
You would probably be outraged if someone told you where to live, what to wear or what to eat. Elected officials make decisions that directly affect your daily life. They have a key role in formulating U.S. foreign policy, the appointment of U.S. Ambassadors, ratification of treaties, participation in international organizations and many other decisions that affect Americans living overseas. By not voting, you allow others to decide issues that greatly and directly affect you and your family. What is an election for Federal office?

Each data file in the collection contains information for one chamber of a single Congress. The units of analysis in each part are the individual members of Congress. Each record contains a member's voting action on every roll call vote taken during that Congress, along with variables that identify the member (e.g., name, party, state, district, uniform ICPSR member number, and most recent means of attaining office). In addition, the codebook provides descriptive information for each roll call, including the date of the vote, outcome in terms of nays and yeas, name of initiator, the relevant bill or resolution number, and a synopsis of the issue.
