107. Thailand Teaching Internship
volunteer college teaching internships in the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. Educational travel programs for college students to study abroad.
http://www.globalroutes.org/college/college_thailand.html
The Global Routes Teaching Internship Program in Thailand was developed in conjunction with our Thai staff members who have backgrounds in volunteer service throughout the northern part of the country. As an intern, you will live with a family in a Thai village, teach English in a local elementary school and participate in other community-based service projects of your own design. You needn't have a background in teaching, the Thai language or have traveled through Southeast Asia. You will receive training and support from Thai and American staff throughout your program. Register Now!
Orientation and Teacher Training (the first two weeks)
The Teaching Placement (2 months)
Orientation complete, your group travels to your villages, about 40km south-east of Chiang Mai. There you will live with a Thai family and teach English in a local elementary school for the next 7- 8 weeks. You will spend your first week observing and assessing classes, and with the support of co-interns, Thai teachers and the Global Routes in-country director, develop appropriate goals and lesson plans. During the teaching placement, interns live with separate families within walking or biking distance from one another, their director and their schools. Living with a family in rural Thailand means giving up some of the conveniences to which you might be accustomed, such as running hot water, familiar foods or privacy. It is a unique opportunity to become more deeply immersed in Thai culture. At times your family stay will be stressful and frustrating, at others you will make profound cross-cultural discoveries.

Arlington Education and Employment Program (Arlington, Virginia, USA) Picture this: You've just received word from your volunteer coordinator that a brand new, eager volunteer will be starting with your class next Monday. What are you going to do? Volunteers can be a tremendous asset in the ESL classroom. They can help you give extra attention to all of the students while the class is engaged in practice activities, or they can give extra help to small groups or individuals in the class. However, as you begin to use volunteers in your classroom, you will need to put a little extra time into planning how you'd like to put them to use, and you will need to designate time either before or during class (sometimes volunteers have to arrive late because of their work schedules) for clarifying your plans with the volunteer. The time it takes to do the extra planning is well worth it, though; it also decreases as you get used to it and build up your supply of strategies for using volunteers. And as your volunteer becomes more acquainted with your students' needs and your teaching style, he or she usually requires less explanation of activities. In general, the gains to your students and yourself far outweigh the bit of extra effort initially needed in using volunteers. Here are some tried and true ideas for using volunteers in your class. They have been collected from teachers who have used volunteers successfully for many years. They are listed in order from basic to more elaborate.

SPAIN

From remote mountain villages to the ritzy avenues of Barcelona and Madrid, Spain’s wide expanse of terrain and cultural experience attracts an equally vast range of travelers who sometimes never leave. Since the death of Franco and his repressive, ultra conservative regime in 1975, Spain has begun an economical and a creative renaissance. The country is now alive with an almost tangible optimism and excitement. Spaniards enjoy life and celebrate it. Some say this optimism can be contributed to the happy escapement of a 36 year oppressive regime. Others feel that it would do the rest of the wo.....

Virtual Journals Issues and Events With a small grant and a good idea, a group of Virginia physics teachers is working in a remote area of Zambia to prevent physics education from becoming a victim of the AIDS pandemic. The teachers began the project last summer by conducting two weeks of workshops for physics teachers at a handful of Zambian schools. "The people we're doing these workshops with are the people who are going to be out there in front of those classrooms with the physics, chemistry, and math students," said Charles Tisdale, a retired US Navy nuclear reactor operator who teaches physics at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach. "We're thinking global, but we're acting local in the sense that we're trying to get down and do something in Zambia that's going to make a difference. And it is also paying off as a reward to us." An education collaboration Described as "a collaboration in education," the COSM project began when Ken Cecire, an education specialist at Hampton, led the five physics teachers, three NASA scientists, and a teacher from Marymount International School in Rome to the St. Joseph's school. After workshops with Zambian teachers at St. Joseph's, the group conducted workshops at two other Zambian schools: St. Mary's High School in Livingstone and the Kabulonga Boys High School in the capital city of Lusaka.

Volunteer in Asia with VIA!
VIA is looking for volunteers with genuine interest in cross-cultural exchange who are dedicated to furthering communication and understanding between the peoples of the United States and Asia. For over 40 years , we have been providing Asian host institutions with a needed resource - native English speakers - while at the same time offering volunteers a unique opportunity to become a valued member of an Asian community. VIA strives to work with organizations who invite us to join them and in areas that do not receive as much foreign attention. VIA is different from many other organizations because volunteers are VIA. Volunteers make many programmatic decisions by consensus. Many staff positions, from in-country field representatives to home office program directors to board members are filled by former volunteers. We maintain a casual atmosphere while emphasizing training and preparation before departure and support while in the field. Every year we offer 20-30 amazing volunteers a unique opportunity to become a valued member of an Asian community. Will you be one?
