90. AAAI 2005 Spring Symposium: Collecting Knowledge From Volunteer Contributors
How do we keep the volunteers interested in the teaching task, how to attract new contributors, and how to increase retention?
http://teach-computers.org/kcvc05.html
Knowledge Collection from Volunteer Contributors (KCVC05)
AAAI 2005 Spring Symposium
This symposium is centered around the idea of collecting knowledge from
large groups of volunteer contributors in a distributed environment. Call for papers Program committee Schedule Accepted papers Many AI tasks depend on having large amounts of knowledge and data. There are knowledge bases to be constructed, corpora to be tagged, long training sessions, and so forth. Such resources are critical to our success, but building them can be difficult and time-consuming. What if we could farm out most of that work out to thousands of volunteers on the internet? Knowledge-starved AI applications can potentially benefit from collecting knowledge from Web users, to enable a variety of applications (knowledge acquisition, common sense reasoning). Emphasis will be placed on applications collecting semantic data – from linguistically annotated corpora to bring deeper data and knowledge-rich processing to more NLP applications, to more common sense knowledge – focusing on relations and rules which can allow systems to better interpret and reason about the everyday world. Both explicit collection of knowledge and elicitation of knowledge as a side effect of, e.g., navigating information or using a search engine will be considered. There will be an additional emphasis on applications which benefit from having such knowledge available – including both aspects of their construction and their role as motivator and validator of users’ contributions.

Volunteer Kilamanjaro: Teach in Tanzania
Teach in Tanzania! How amazing would it be to spend three months teaching English in the foothills of the tallest free standing mountain in the world; only hours from the famous Serengeti! Now is your opportunity. Through our Volunteer Kilimanjaro program, you will receive training, lodging support, and a place to teach for three months. It is an amazing chance to be immersed in a culture that is one of the most endearing in the world. Here is how it works: Volunteer Kilimanjaro offers participants a unique opportunity to teach in a village school on the slopes of Kilimanjaro and live as a family member in a local home-stay. Initially, we will spend two weeks of orientation in Moshi participating in Swahili language training, teacher training, and lectures about health, religion, government, and Tanzanian culture. Finally, participants are placed with local families in their school’s villages in the Kilimanjaro region.

Tijuana; Tacos, teaching and too much Tequila…
Email: Tessa Kramer , ask her about her trip to Mexico. A first impression of a T2T volunteer. I think I always knew I would be back. Well, not in the same place, but back with Travel to Teach. Ever since my volunteering experience in Thailand and even more so after I got back home, I had the feeling of having been bitten by the volunteer-bug. To top it off, there had been word of a new project, a new continent, new people, a new experience… Tijuana, Mexico. A whole new ballgame compared to Nong Khai, Thailand. Both are on the border, have bumpy roads and excellent food, but that's about where the obvious comparison stops. Walking around the scruffy streets of Tijuana, seeing all the colorful houses and shops, smelling the various taco stands, hearing the mariachis play their guitars, you simply forget about the prejudiced tales of crime and danger and are immediately put at ease by a single smiling face and a cheerful 'Buenas dias'. Our dorm is right in the town center, so everything we need is a short walk away. The house is simple, but cozy and right next to an independent cultural activity center, where a lot is happening every day and night

Chinese School Children
The Global Volunteer Network currently has teaching English opportunities available through our partner organization in China. This will give you a chance to make an important contribution to the people of China and while doing so gain an in depth experience of the country and its culture, that will stay with you the rest of your life. This particular program is unique to alternative programs that we offer. Education is regarded extremely important so children are sent from the local villages into the cities to be schooled. The schools are well resourced and volunteers are sought in order to help with conversational English. It is the wish of the Chinese nation to become bilingual.
