Munnar is a "hill station" frequented by the British in colonial times. Because of its altitude (5000 ft./1520 m.) it offers cool respite from the sweltering lowlands. May is a particularly beautiful time there. The name "Munnar", meaning three rivers, refers to its location at the confluence of three rivers. The town is situated among endless expanses of tea plantations. It is one of the most beautiful locations in India, and offers a more tranquil view of the country. It is about 3-4 hours east of Cochin ( CLICK for map). The Carmelgiri C.M.I Public School with 630 students and 27 teachers needs volunteers to teach and speak English with the kids. Volunteer Teacher Program The Mirror Art Group assumes a wide range of responsibilities within the Mae Yao community. The Mirror Art Group enlists the help of the volunteer teachers to accomplish these projects. These are committed, dynamic individuals of all ages and backgrounds who choose to devote their time, skills and energy to the work of the Group. Most of the volunteers are technologically savvy and obtain information about the program through this webpage.
Thus far over 2,000 volunteers have already come to Chiang Rai to work on the Mirror Art Group's various projects in the area. A typical placement will last for 4 or 5 days, in groups of up to 50 people. The volunteers live with villagers for the duration, trying to fit in to the tribal culture as much as possible. Projects involve teaching Thai (the second language of the hilltribes) and English, helping the farmers in the fields, and entertaining the children with games and songs.
The rewards are numerous for both the volunteers and the children. Volunteers have a rare opportunity to learn about and form bonds within a minority culture that is misunderstood by the majority of lowland Thais and unknown to most of the world. They also realize new skills as they meet the challenges of a much more strenuous life and gain satisfaction from their interactions with the children. The hilltribe children living in remote villages gain an opportunity to practice languge with native speakers, derive pride in their culture from the genuine interest of the volunteers can use the volunteer teachers as positive role models during their inevitable integration into Thai culture.

The Teach for America program is an education program in which mostly recent college graduates go into poor, urban districts and teach for two years after receiving summer training. The incentive for participating in the program used to be getting a regular teaching salary, as well as forgiveness from college loans. However, the loan part was cut during the budget. Teach for America statistically has improved math scores for the children in the program.
President George W. Bush wants to continue to fund the Teach for America program if he is reelected and eventually hopes to institute some degree of loan forgiveness back into the program. He also wants to start the Adjunct Teachers Corps to bring professionals in the math and sciences into middle and high schools. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., has a more ambitious program in which he would add incentives for staying with Teach for America longer and allow two-year participants in Americorps or Teach for America to attend their state universities for four years tuition-free.
In a utopian world, Kerry's plan would clearly be preferable. With a four-year tuition incentive, many students would jump at the chance to work for either program. Unfortunately, the United States is already deeply in debt, and Kerry also said he wants to balance the budget. Therefore, Kerry's plan is, at best, impractical.

The Cooperative Extension Volunteer Teacher: Preparing the Extension Volunteer to Teach
Elizabeth B. Bolton Teaching is more than knowing the subject matter. It involves preparation, practice and delivery. It also involves knowing about the learners. Preparing to teach is an important part of the job of the Extension Volunteer Teacher. The following sections summarize some of the important aspects the Extension Volunteer Teacher needs to know about teaching adults. It is not possible within the context of this module to cover everything that is important is preparing the Extension Volunteer to teach. Only the most pertinent aspects will be covered and these include a basic understanding of adult education as it pertains to the adults as learners and the learning environment. Barriers to learning that typically affect the adult's attention and recall are discussed with some suggestions for overcoming these. The events of instruction are presented as a sequence of "things to do" for both the teacher and the student. One of the events of instruction is the choice of method for delivering instruction. The demonstration, used so frequently with Extension clientele, is explained with some suggestions for using questions to elicit discussion and recall.

Peace Corps Sending 48 Volunteer Teachers to China
China program restarted after containment of SARS outbreaks
The Peace Corps is sending 48 volunteers to teach English and environmental education in China's Sichuan, Guizhou, and Gansu provinces and the Chongqing municipality, according to a press release issued by the Peace Corps July 21. "As China undergoes dramatic economic changes, we are delighted that Peace Corps volunteers can be there to provide technical and educational opportunities to its citizens," Peace Corps Director Gaddi H. Vasquez said in the release. "We look forward to continuing the successful projects Peace Corps volunteers have created in China over the past 10 years." In April 2003, the Peace Corps suspended its program in China as a precautionary measure due to the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
"With SARS contained, an assessment team concluded that the overall environment allows for the immediate return of Peace Corps volunteers," the press release says. "Volunteers serve in the more rural regions of China, and thus, are not in the areas that were most heavily affected by SARS." According to the press release, the Peace Corps hopes to have over 80 volunteers working in China by next summer.

Volunteer Teachers Simone Ashby London, U.K. 13 December 2001 - 1 March 2002 Programme : Teaching and Projects Abroad Impression : Both students and teachers were very friendly and helpful and generous at all times and I felt welcomed from the first day. I have had a wonderful experience here. I did find that some students were too shy to approach us and in lessons they were afraid to ask questions or tell me if they did not understand me. Suggestions :
Make sure volunteers know in advance what they are expected to teach. For example, it was unclear for me whether I should teach on my own and therefore plan each lesson, or whether I was just helping a teacher in her lessons, therefore teaching from a text book.
Make sure volunteers have at least 2 lessons a day and that they are made aware of public holidays and lesson cancellations in advance. Georgina Bonner London, U.K.
