WELCOME TO STARLINGS HOME PAGE Beginning with a single inner -city San Diego team in 1996, today Starlings is the largest Junior Volleyball Club in the regardless of their socioeconomic background. Club dues, if any, are a fraction of most Junior Club costs and no girl is turned away because of inability to pay. The Starlings philosophy is a holistic one: competition is good but sports should also be fun. Finally, an athlete should seek to develop all her talents and for this reason, we proudly promote our annual Liter ary/Art Contest. Since its inception, over girls have received collegiate volleyball scholarships. As we begin the 2005 season, the organization welcomes the addition of new affiliates in Salt Lake City, Denver, Bakersfield, Greenville/Spartanburg, Kansas City , and San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation (Arizona) 8th ANNUAL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS Pure joy! Los Angeles-Manual Arts shows the cohesion that led them to 2nd place in the 16s Gold Division. A record-breaking 86 teams traveled to San Diego in late June for four days of fun, competition, and friendship. At least a half-dozen college coaches visited the event in search of scholarship talent and they found a lot of it. The level of play has increased dramatically and has spread to all parts of the nation.

History
Playing volleyball at the beach, which is not the same thing as playing modern beach volleyball, evidently began in Hawaii in 1915, when the Outrigger Beach and Canoe Club set up a court on Waikiki Beach. The main purpose of the club was to promote surfing, but when the waves weren't right, members often played volleyball while waiting for the surf to come up. One of the players was Duke Kahanamoku , the Olympic swimmer and surfing pioneer. Later, as athletic director at the Beach Club in Santa Monica, California, Kahanamoku helped turn beach volleyball from a leisurely activity into a fast-paced, athletic sport. During the early 1920s, college students began playing six-on-six volleyball on beaches in Southern California. A number of courts were built at public and private beaches, especially around Santa Monica. Two private clubs in Santa Monica, the Beach Club and the Swimming Club, began regular competition in 1924, playing every Sunday from July Fourth through Labor Day weekend. On public beaches, groups of families often played three-on-three or four-on-four games, depending on how many players were available.

The Australian women’s team toured Japan and competed against company teams as well as touring China to play against their strong provincial sides. VTAW made history when they defeated a Chinese team in the Healthway International Volleyball Challenge. Unfortunately, they lost the series overall.
The Australian women’s team competed in the 8 th Asian Senior Women’s Championships in Thailand and finished in 6 th spot; they then went onto compete in the World Cup Qualification Series where they were defeated by Kenya 2:1. This means that their last opportunity to compete in the Atlanta Olympics would be the Asian Olympic Tournament in Canberra in March 1996.
Volleyball Team Australia Men began 1995 in good form going to Canada in February and winning their third straight series.
