The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports. Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week. In William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport.

Volleyball was invented by William Morgan in 1896 in Holyoke, Mass. and was originally called "mintonette". Morgan's friend James Naismith had recently come up with a new game involving a ball and two peach baskets, but Morgan thought this game, known as basketball, would be too strenuous for middle-aged folk so he invented his own game, one that would soon be known as volleyball. New rules and even a brand new position made their debuts at the 2000 Sydney Games. Traditionally, teams could only score when they had served the ball. Since 2000, teams can score no matter who served, making all rallies do or die. In order to accommodate the quicker scoring pace, the first four sets are now played to 25 points while the final set remains at 15 points. Sets must be won by two points. Matches are best-of-five sets. Additionally, and perhaps even more revolutionary, is the addition of a new position called the "libero". The libero wears a different colored shirt from their teammates and is able to substitute into the back row at anytime. The libero cannot serve, spike or rotate into the front row but these back row defensive specialists can generate a lot more digs and create longer rallies leading to more suspense. The games remain six-on-six competition.

OLYMPIC HISTORY Successfully introduced in Atlanta 1996, beach volleyball varies in a number of ways from the traditional indoor game. For a start, there are just two players on each team instead of six, while points are scored only when the serving team wins a rally. Games are played to the best of three sets. Each set is played to 15 points, though if the margin of victory is less than two points, the set proceeds to 17 points, at which stage it is possible to win 17-16. Medal-winning games consist of the best of three sets to 12 points, though a point is scored for every rally in the third set, regardless of who is serving. The final set goes on beyond 12 points until one player is two points clear. With the elements a factor, teams swap sides of the court after every five points throughout the game. In Atlanta, the inaugural top honours went to Karch Kiraly, a double Olympic champion of indoor volleyball, and partner Kent Steffes, of the United States, and Jacqueline Silva and Sandra Pires, of Brazil. Runners-up in both events were from the same nations as the winners, the finals all American and all-Brazilian affairs.

The game, first referred to as 'Mintonette', was the brainchild of American William G. Morgan and spread to Europe and around the world during the Great War. It became an officially recognised sport after the Second World War when the International Federation was founded and, having been played as a demonstration sport at the 1924 Olympics, was granted full status at the 1964 Tokyo Games. Unlike many sports, both men and women started competing at the same time, and it was the Soviet Union that dominated affairs in each discipline. Both teams won medals in every Olympics between 1964 and 1988, the 1984 Los Angeles boycott apart. Their haul included seven golds and in that period the men's team lost only six of their 43 outings, with the Soviet women going down on a mere three occasions in 33 matches.
