For one hundred years, the Olympics have brought glory to a select group of countries, and which have seen the rise of many great athletes who have earned the right to be grouped with the best there ever was and, in the process, have gained recognition for their native lands. Cuba then withdrew from the Olympic Games until the 1924 event in Paris. That was where Haiti made its mark, literally, in the shooting competition. The team of Ludovic Augustin, Astrel Rolland, Ludovic Valborge, Destin Destine and Eloi Metullus scored a total of 646 points in the free rifle competition, to finish in a tie with France behind the United States (676 points). The French eventually won a play-off, leaving Haiti to settle for bronze. Four years later, Silvio Cator, who also served as captain of the Haitian national soccer team, took the long jump silver medal in track and field with a leap of 7.58 meters. This was to be the last Caribbean medal-earning performance for the next 20 years.

BUILDING PLANS International Institute for Sport and Olympic History Future spot for architect's drawing! The search is on. We have begun looking for land in central Pennsylvania to build a campus for the Institute. Our plan is described in more detail below. Eventually we anticipate that this campus will be one of the largest sports facilities in Pennsylvania. The IISOH effectively has two divisions the Library and the Museum. The Board of Directors are seeking benefactor(s) to endow each division with a $25 million donation. An endowment will also be sought for the theatre in the amount of $25 million. The benefactor(s) will then be offered the opportunity to name the Library, Museum or theatre, subject to the final approval of the Board of Directors. Go to the ENDOWMENTS page. Our plans are to construct facilities on a campus approximately 300 acres in size. This will allow us have room for expansion in the decades to come as we increase the endowment and add sports facilities to the educational program. Sports fields are desirable in order to teach through participation and play. If we have a baseball field we can teach the history of baseball by playing a game using 1860 rules for 3 innings, then playing by modern rules for 3 innings. In the basement of the Museum we could have a bowling alley from the 1800's where the pins have to be set by hand, and right next to it have a modern bowling alley that is fully automated. Our visitors can go bowling either way. Consider the possibilities for each and every sport this means a lot of space is needed.

HOST CITY Sydney, New South Wales, Australia was awarded the Millennium Games on 23 September, 1993 in Monte Carlo. It was the third of three consecutive bids to be made by an Australian city and was backed by 90% of the Australian population. If all goes well, it also will pay off in a few weeks for the U.S. men's Olympic volleyball team. At the invitation of national team coach, Fred Sturm, Lambert took a year off from Stanford University. Little did Lambert know that the RSVP would be for a ticket to Atlanta. "I didn't think 1996 would be my year," said the two-time Stanford All-American. "I thought the 2000 Olympics would be more realistic. I felt I needed at least a couple of years of experience before I could be at this level. "There were never any guarantees when I first went down to (San Diego) to train. My whole goal was to make it to the Olympics. But I was competing against all these big-name players and needing to beat them out. It's still an overwhelming thought." Starting in July of 1995, Lambert overwhelmed the intersquad competition with his all-around play. By last October's World Cup, he had earned a starting spot at opposite hitter, edging out veteran Tom Sorensen.

I was just brushing up on my Australian. Now that the Centennial Games in Atlanta are over, I'm looking forward to the New Millennium Games in Sydney when it hosts the Olympics in the Year 2000. It also means farewell to the word, "repechage," which can be found in your daily newspaper only once every four years -during the Olympics. Repechage is French for a second chance. Well, I sure hope that there's no repechage for beach volleyball in the next Olympics. It was one of the sports added to the Atlanta Games, along with softball. But unlike softball, which provided a great story, beach volleyball only detracted from real volleyball. It got to the point where some of the media started referring to the latter as indoor volleyball. Give me a break. Knowing the Aussies - and with Sydney home to 30 beaches - it's very likely that beach volleyball might reappear again. I hope not. Instead, I wish the Aussies would opt for rugby, Australian Rules Football or even surfing. And I'm sure that if Greg Norman had any input, golf would be introduced. It's the closest that Greg will ever get to seeing his world tour happen. There was a restaurant ad in the paper the other day saying that "sushi rolling is not an Olympic event ... yet!"

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CAROLINA REGION/USAV The Carolina Region of USA Volleyball (USAV) officially became an independent Region of USA Volleyball in 1981/1982, but North Carolina amateur volleyball players have been a part of the USA Volleyball structure since its inception. USA Volleyball originally divided the country up into Numbered Regions of which North Carolina was placed in Region Five. Eventually, Region Names were adopted and North Carolina was part of the Southern Region along with Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina. NC teams would have to travel throughout this Region to play in tournaments! In 1981, a group of NC volleyball players (Rick Bardolph, Tere Dail, and Fred Wendelboe-first Commissioner) felt it would be beneficial for NC and SC to split off from the Southern Region to help foster growth. The Carolina Region was officially incorporated in March of 1982. The Region inherited 275 members from its split with the Southern Region. By 1987, Carolina Region volleyball was growing steadily. A group of members in South Carolina felt growth in that state could be better achieved by forming their own Region, so with the approval of the Carolina Region and the Regional Operations Division of USA Volleyball, the Palmetto Region (SC) split off from the Carolina Region in 1987. The Carolina Region had 1563 members in 1987 of which 282 split off to become the Palmetto Region. North Carolina was on it's own as a USAV Region. MISSION: The Carolina Region, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is dedicated to developing and improving the sport of volleyball throughout the state of North Carolina from grassroots programs to elite by utilizing: (a) Coaching Education, (b) Player clinics, (c ) Facility improvements/development, (d) Quality tournaments, and (e) Information services. The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports. Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play volleyball at least once a week. In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. On July 7, 1896 at Springfield College the first game of "volleyball" was played. William G. Morgan created the game of volleyball.
