Adelaide home to AIS/Australian beach volleyball program
The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and Volleyball Australia (AVF) today announced that Adelaide will be the home of the AIS/Australian Beach Volleyball program. The South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) will be a key partner in delivering the program. It will lend considerable expertise, facilities and support in the form of vital sports science and sports medicine assistance. The defining moment for the sport though in this country was at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Playing before huge crowds at the Bondi Beach venue, Australian pair Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst won an historic gold medal. AIS Director Professor Peter Fricker said the decision to start a beach volleyball program was a logical progression, considering previous Olympic success and the rising level of public interest and talented athletes in Australia. Volleyball Australia General Manager Andrew Scotford said the establishment of the program in Adelaide heralded a new and exciting era for the sport in Australia.

Red Tabs = Members Only Youth Volleyball League Names Two Sports Legends to Board of Directors Hawthorne, Calif. Former Los Angeles Lakers and NBA star Kurt Rambis of Manhattan Beach and pro beach volleyball legend Jim Menges of Santa Monica, Calif., were named on Dec. 15, 2004, in a unanimous vote to the Board of Directors of the United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL), the nation’s largest grassroots, youth volleyball league established in 1997 and serving more than 30,000 youth participants between the ages of 8 and 14 years. The USYVL operates community-based youth volleyball leagues in more than 70 locations throughout the U.S. to provide boys and girls with the opportunity to learn and play volleyball in a “fun, safe and supervised environment.” Rambis enjoyed a successful, 13-year NBA career that included four World Championships in 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988. He was promoted in the Los Angeles Lakers’ organization in September 2004 to the position of vice president of business and basketball integration after serving as an assistant coach for the past three seasons. He serves as an advisor to team owner, Dr. Jerry Buss, and consults on all business development matters concerning the NBA’s Lakers, as well as the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. He previously served as an assistant general manager and the team’s interim head coach for part of the 1998-99 season. Rambis became aware of the USYVL when his children participated in the league and developed an immediate love for the sport of volleyball.

History Of Volleyball In 1995, the sport of Volleyball celebrated its 100th birthday! The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports. Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week. In (only two years after the invention of basketball), William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass. (only minutes from the birthplace of basketball), decided to blend elements of tennis, baseball, basketball, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of "mintonette". Morgan used the bladder of a basketball to provide a lighter ball with a more lively bounce. He borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the height of an average man's head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. Why are Olympic beach volleyballers playing on Belgian sand?

    Listen
to this story on NPR's Day to Day Check out those fine grains! When I watch Olympic beach volleyball, I can't stop staring at the silica implants. Not silicone implants, mind you. I'm not ogling fake boobs. I'm ogling fake sand. During a recent telecast, NBC commentator Chris Marlowe sized up the seductive playing surface. "Beautiful white sand," he drooled, "pure as can be." But this sand isn't pure at all. The Olympics are in a country with some of the world's most gorgeous beaches, yet somehow beach volleyball is being contested on sand that is a) not from Greece and b) not even from a beach. In the first week of competition, NBC's disoriented announcers claimed that the inside of the Olympic courts had been filled with Dutch (or possibly Norwegian) sand while Greek sand covered the sidelines. But this rosy picture of a multinational beach—Greece with a light dusting of Holland on top—was far from accurate. On the eve of the tournament, Olympic officials covered every inch of the Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre with 1,700 tons of sand harvested from a mine in Mol, Belgium

Responding to the challenge of its sandy cousin beach volleyball, which was introduced to Olympic competition in Atlanta in 1996, the indoor version of the sport has undergone a number of reforms. Two of these reforms have been dramatic, a change to the scoring system and the introduction of an entire new position, a libero. Traditionally, a team has only been able to score a point on its own serve. But the latest rule changes mean a point will be at stake in every rally.
