In 1995, the sport of volleyball celebrated its 100th birthday. This page providesa timeline of the sports short history.

History Of Volleyball http://www.Volleyball.ORG
In 1995, the sport of Volleyball was 100 years old! The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports. Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week. In William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. On July 7, 1896

The Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), the worldwide governing body for the sport of volleyball, is based in Lausanne, Switzerland and led by its president, Dr. Ruben Acosta H. The FIVB was founded in Paris in 1947 by 14 nations. Its first president, Paul Libaud, was succeeded by Dr. Acosta in 1984. In Holyoke, Massachusetts, William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education director, created a new game called "Mintonette" as a pastime to be played preferably indoors and by any number of players. The game took some of its characteristics from tennis and handball. It was not as rough as basketball, but still required quite a bit of athletic effort. After a demonstration given at the YMCA in nearby Springfield, the name "Mintonette" was replaced with "Volleyball." The rules as modified by W.E. Day were accepted and published by the YMCA. The height of the net went up to 7 feet 6 inches. Match length was set at 21 points. Canada was the first "foreign" country to adopt volleyball.

The history and origins of the great game of volleyball.
http://athleticscholarships.net/history-of-volleyball.htm
Home About Us What We Do Questions ... Contact Us This was how volleyball was introduced FACTS AND INFORMATION ABOUT THE GAME How it all began. The game of volleyball, originally called "mintonette", was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, after the invention of basketball by only 4 years. Morgan, a graduate of the Springfield College of the YMCA, designed the game to be a mix of basketball, baseball, handball and tennis. The first volleyball net, borrowed from tennis, was only 6'6" high (though one must consider that the average American was shorter in the 19th century). The offensive style of setting and spiking was first demonstrated in the Philippines in 1916. Over the years that followed, it became clear that certain rule standardizations were desirable for tournament play, and thus the USVBA (United States Volleyball Association) was born in 1928. Two years later, the first 2-man beach volleyball game was played, though the professional side of the sport did not emerge until much later. Not surprisingly, the first beach volleyball association appeared in California (1965), and the professional players united under the auspices of the AVP (American Volleyball Professionals) in 1983. During the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, American men and women took gold and silver medals in indoor volleyball competition. Four years later at the Olympics in Korea, the men once again scored gold. Starting in 1996, 2-man beach volleyball was officially introduced to the Olympics. Today, there are more than 800 million volleyball players worldwide, 46 million of them in the U.S.

Volleyball 1: Early Development
After it was invented in December of 1891, basketball quickly became popular at many YMCAs across North America. But those were YMCAs with a membership of young men who enjoyed running up and down a gym floor. William G. Morgan was physical director at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts, in 1895. Most of his clients were middle-aged businessman who found basketball too strenuous. So Morgan decided to create a sport that would offer them exercise without making them run. He strung a badminton net across a gym floor, brought out the bladder of a soccer ball, and split the men into two teams that volleyed the improvised ball back and forth across the net. Because it was patterned after badminton, Morgan called the new sport "mintonette." In his original rules, the court was 25 by 50 feet and the net was 6 feet, 6 inches high. In a bow to baseball, a match was made up of nine innings, with three serves for each team per inning. There was no limit to the number of players on a team. In 1896, Morgan and some of his members traveled the 10 miles to a YMCA directors' conference in Springfield, the birthplace of basketball, the demonstrate the new sport. Dr. A. T. Halsted suggested that the name should be changed to "volleyball," and Morgan agreed.
