Augsburg Volleyball History
1996 Wrap-Up
1997 Wrap-Up Augsburg College had one of the dominant volleball teams in the state during its first decade of competition. Under the direction of coach Mary Timm, the Auggies finished runner-up to the Minnesota Gophers in both 1974 and 1975, and placed third and fifth, respectively, in the AIAW regionals in those years. Former Augsburg player Marilyn Florian replaced Timm in 1981 and carried on the excellence. The Auggies finshed 6-2 in the first season of MIAC competition, and followed that up with two MIAC runner-up finished with 7-2 and 8-2 conference records. The Auggies won 29 matches in 1982 and 31 in 1984, then set a school record in 1985 with 32 wins and a 10-1 MIAC record. Some of the top players at Augsburg have been Minnesota state AIAW all-tournament picks Julie Reinke, Kathey Korum, and Dana Homes (1980) and Jessie Domek (1981); and all-MIAC selections Teri Raske and Sue Warnes (1982); Terry Dahlem (1983); Anne Richter (1983-85); Lisa Svac (1984); Diane Gerber Houle (1985); Heidi Norman (1987 HM); Kristin Dragseth (1990); Sally Hedman (1988-89 HM); Tina Kubes (1992); Carolyn Tuohy (1994); Tippy Peterson (1994 HM); Missy Munsey (1995); Tasha Hamann (1996-97) and Jamie Fuchs (1997).

Nevada Jrs. Volleyball Association was the first and most successful junior volleyball club in Nevada. Its inaugural season being 1984-1985, Nevada Jrs. has since captured three Nike Davis Festival Championships (18's in 1989 and 1990, and 16's in 1991) and two United States Junior Olympic Championships (16's in 1988 and 18's in 1990).
Through the years, over forty Nevada Jrs. players have received Division I athletic scholarships and many more players have continued their volleyball careers playing at either small colleges or junior colleges. As a result of these numerous successes, Nevada Jrs. has played an integral role in elevating the role of high school girl's volleyball and has helped to make it one of the leading sports, for both males and females, in receiving athletic scholarships in the state of Nevada.
Karen Lamb (then the Head Women's Coach at UNLV) originally organized Nevada Jrs., with the invaluable guidance from two co-founders of the Nike Davis Volleyball Festival, Dave and Bernice Epperson. Only one of the original coaches is still involved with the club, Bob Kelly.

The History of Volleyball
Initially, volleyball was a game designed as a recreation activity for businessmen. It was first invented in 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education director, blended elements of tennis, handball and basketball to create the game, which he first named "Mintonette." The first rules, written by Morgan himself, called for a net 6 feet 6 inches high and a 25 by 50 foot court. Any number of players could participate in the game, and a match was composed of nine innings, with three serves for each team each inning. A year later, after seeing a demonstration given at the YMCA in nearby Springfield, Massachusetts, a businessman named Dr. Halstead suggested the name be changed to "Volleyball" because the basic idea of the game was to volley the ball back and forth over the net. A few years later, in 1900, a modification of rules was suggested by W.E. Day. He proposed that the height of the net go up to 7 feet 6 inches and match length be set at 21 points. These changes were accepted and published by the YMCA. Although originated in the United States, volleyball quickly gained popularity around the world. Canada was the first "foreign" country to adopt volleyball in 1900. Six years later, Cuba discovered volleyball, thanks to Augusto York, a North American army officer who took part in the second military intervention in this Caribbean island.
