Russia taking beach volleyball more seriously
MOSCOW, August 10 (RIA Novosti, Mikhail Smirnov) - Volleyball is now being taken more seriously in Russia. Vice president of the Russian Volleyball Federation Valentin Zhukov believes the game's status in the country is rapidly changing. Twenty-five years ago, Zhukov said, standard volleyball players who trained on sand between seasons found that they could jump 10-15 cm higher on returning to hard volleyball courts. At the time, beach volleyball was not an Olympic sport and was, therefore, not given much attention in the Soviet Union. Beach volleyball players can now win Olympic medals for their country, and television stations are showing an increasing interest in the sport, so the situation is fundamentally changing, Zhukov said. The Volleyball Federation's vice president in charge of beach volleyball is Gennadi Shipulin, the former national captain, who led his team to win the World League in 2002.

Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre (AFP) Beach volleyball made its Olympic debut in Sydney four years ago. While the brand new beach volleyball centre in Faliro in Athens can't match Bondi Beach for natural majesty, it will play host to another first for the sport - beach volleyball under lights. The centre will seat almost 10,000 fans. On one side of the main court they'll be in a semi-circular stand covered by a flying-saucer-shaped roof. On the opposite side is a stand which stretches towards the Athenian sky. The centre also features six warm-up and two training courts. The centre is part of the Faliro coastal zone of Olympic venues in South Attica. The Beach Volleyball Centre, the Sports Pavilion, the Marina and the Esplanade are part of the coastal zone which is marked for urban redevelopment. Home About Us What We Do Questions ... Contact Us This was how volleyball was introduced FACTS AND INFORMATION ABOUT THE GAME How it all began. The game of volleyball, originally called "mintonette", was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, after the invention of basketball by only 4 years. Morgan, a graduate of the Springfield College of the YMCA, designed the game to be a mix of basketball, baseball, handball and tennis. The first volleyball net, borrowed from tennis, was only 6'6" high (though one must consider that the average American was shorter in the 19th century). The offensive style of setting and spiking was first demonstrated in the Philippines in 1916. Over the years that followed, it became clear that certain rule standardizations were desirable for tournament play, and thus the USVBA (United States Volleyball Association) was born in 1928. Two years later, the first 2-man beach volleyball game was played, though the professional side of the sport did not emerge until much later. Not surprisingly, the first beach volleyball association appeared in California (1965), and the professional players united under the auspices of the AVP (American Volleyball Professionals) in 1983. During the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, American men and women took gold and silver medals in indoor volleyball competition. Four years later at the Olympics in Korea, the men once again scored gold. Starting in 1996, 2-man beach volleyball was officially introduced to the Olympics. Today, there are more than 800 million volleyball players worldwide, 46 million of them in the U.S.

Adelaide home to AIS/Australian beach volleyball program
The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and Volleyball Australia (AVF) today announced that Adelaide will be the home of the AIS/Australian Beach Volleyball program. The South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) will be a key partner in delivering the program. It will lend considerable expertise, facilities and support in the form of vital sports science and sports medicine assistance. The defining moment for the sport though in this country was at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Playing before huge crowds at the Bondi Beach venue, Australian pair Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst won an historic gold medal. AIS Director Professor Peter Fricker said the decision to start a beach volleyball program was a logical progression, considering previous Olympic success and the rising level of public interest and talented athletes in Australia. Volleyball Australia General Manager Andrew Scotford said the establishment of the program in Adelaide heralded a new and exciting era for the sport in Australia.

Volleyball was invented in 1895 at a YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts as an indoor team sport that was not dangerous. In the Olympics there are two different kinds of volleyball, Volleyball and Beach Volleyball. Volleyball became an Olympic sport in 1964 and Beach Volleyball became an Olympic sport in 1996. Volleyball is played on an indoor court by two teams. Six players are on the court at a time. Beach Volleyball is played on a sandy court (usually a beach) with two players for each team. The volleyball court is 60 feet (18 meters) long and 30 feet (9 meters) wide. For men's games, the net is 8 feet (2.4 meters) high, and for women's games, it is 7 feet 4 inches (2.2 meters) high. The ball used for the game is made of leather, plastic, or rubber. A volleyball is just a little smaller than a basketball but much softer. The game is played by two teams of six members each. To win a match in volleyball a team has to win three sets out of five. One team hits the ball to the other team. The objective is to have the ball hit the floor on the other's team's side - then you get a point. In the Olympics both Volleyball and Beach Volleyball are played by men and women.

Volleyball is a popular sport where two teams, separated by a high net, hit a ball back and forth over the net between the teams. Every team is allowed three hits to get the ball over the net to the other team. A point is scored if the ball hits the ground in the opponents' court, if the opponents commit a fault, or if they fail to return the ball properly. Volleyball game Volleyball is a very active sport that provides an excellent level of aerobic exercise. It also helps players in their hand-eye coordination and the ability to override the instinctive desire to dodge an object such as a ball.

Beach volleyball has evolved from the popular social games of (A game in which two teams hit an inflated ball over a high net using their hands) volleyball played on many (An area of sand sloping down to the water of a sea or lake) beach es around the world. This version, rather than being played on indoor hard courts, is played on (A loose material consisting of grains of rock or coral) sand courts, which are either formed naturally or built specifically for the purpose. Instead of a team of six, each team consists of only two players, but otherwise the rules are almost identical with some exceptions including:
The size of the court has recently changed but had for many years been 30' x 30' exactly like indoors 4's and grass varieties such as 3 vs 3
The block always counts as the first contact
The disallowance of the dink play where a player uses their finger tips to redirect the ball into the opponent's court instead of a hard spike
Stricter rules around double-contacts during hand setting
Looser rules on serve return
One of the facets of beach volleyball is the use of hand signals by players to indicate to their partner what sort of play they intend to make. These signals are made behind the back, to avoid the opposition seeing the signals. Generally, a closed fist means the player will not attempt a block, one finger means the player will attempt to block an opponent's spike down the line, and two fingers means the player will attempt to block an opponent's spike into the angle. Combined with the standard attire of female competitors, these pictures proved irresistible to editors of

Brazil cement status as men's volleyball champs
Last Updated: Monday, August 30, 2004. 1:00am (AEST) World champions Brazil have cemented their status as the undisputed best men's volleyball team in the world, with an imposing victory over second-ranked Italy in the Olympic final in Athens. Brazil's 25-15, 24-26, 25-20, 25-22 win gives them the rare honour of holding all four major volleyball titles at once, with their trophy cabinet already full following the 2002 world championships, the 2003 World Cup and this year's World League. Gilberto Godoy Filho, Brazil's 1.92m wing spiker, was the stand-out attacker and top scorer for the match with 20 points. He received strong support from Gustavo Endres, with 14 points, and Andre Nascimento, 11 points. The powerhouse front-line trio had combined to score 185 points leading into the final. The victory, Brazil's fourth gold of the Olympics, was a justified reward for their near total dominance.

The development of these key skills is necessary prior to advancing to team competition. These skills include volleying, serving and passing. Special Olympics athletes can also participate in Unified Sports® Volleyball Team Competition. Format: Indoor volleyball is experiencing many changes in 2000. A new position has been created called libero. This substitute will wear a different-color uniform and may only play in the backcourt. A libero will not serve, block or spike. Libero substitutions are unlimited and do not count toward the six allowed each team per set. Both men's and women's tournaments are 12-teams with pool play. Top four teams in each pool advance to single-elimination medal rounds. Scoring: A new system is in place allowing the team that wins the rally to score regardless of which team served. The first four sets will be played to 25 points, instead of 12, with a two-point margin required to win. The final set still will be played to 15 points, provided there is a minimum lead of two points.
