This 1st round result was set up by aggressive jump serving, big blocks and power transition hitting. It was a very positive start to the tournament played in swirly, warm, blustery conditions on the outside courts. The next two matches saw Gerlic/Clarke go down to FIVB World Tour leaders Juliana Felisberta Silva Larissa Franca and to locals Nikolaidou Papageorgiou . The final placing for the Aussie pair was 17th. In their first International Beach Volleyball event, the young SASI / Australia team of Travis Moran (2004 Olympian Indoor) and Phil Austin (Former AIS Indoor Squad) struggled in some tight and tense sets on Copacabana Beach in Rio.

Men and women; two teams of six players each on a 9-by-9-meter indoor court. Traces its roots to Massachusetts in the late 1800's, when William G. Morgan, a Y.M.C.A. instructor, took elements of handball, baseball, basketball and tennis and created a game for his classes of businessmen that would not demand as much physical contact as basketball did. The game was originally called mintonette. Volleyball first appeared in the Olympics in 1964, and the United States men have two gold medals, in 1984 and 1988, while the women have yet to take the Olympic championship. In will be tough again in Athens. In the men's tournament, Brazil will try to supplant Serbia and Montenegro, which won the gold in Sydney. Yugoslavia, the 2000 silver medalist, Russia, and Italy are among the top teams. The Cuban women's team is looking for its fourth consecutive gold medal and may face its stiffest challenge from Brazil, which grabbed the bronze in Sydney.

Brazil backed up its No. 1 world ranking in men's volleyball with a gold-medal finish to a near-perfect Olympics, beating rival Italy 25-16, 24-26, 25-20, 25-22 in the final. Gilberto Godoy Filho had 20 points to lead the Brazilians. Brazil has been a major power in international competition over the past decade, but this was its first Olympic medal since a gold in 1992. Russia overpowered a sluggish U.S. team 25-22, 27-25, 25-16 to win the bronze. The Americans played from behind almost the whole time, making poor hitting decisions that left them unable to get any of their spikes around the towering Russian triple block.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) — The United States stunned world champion Brazil on Sunday to win the America's Cup of volleyball 3-2 in a five-set marathon. The U.S. team grabbed an early lead and hung on to beat Brazil 27-25, 26-24, 21-25, 20-25 and 15-11 before a packed house of 6,000 fans in the southern Brazilian city of Sao Leopoldo, about 750 miles southwest of Rio de Janeiro. Youth Volleyball League Names Two Sports Legends to Board of Directors
Since the league’s inception in 1997, over 30,000 boys and girls have participated on community –based teams.
HAWTHORNE, Calif. (January 7, 2005) - Former Los Angeles Lakers and NBA star, Kurt Rambis, of Manhattan Beach, and pro beach volleyball legend, Jim Menges, of Santa Monica, Calif. were named on December 15, 2004, in a unanimous vote to the Board of Directors of the United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL), the nation’s largest grassroots, youth volleyball league established in 1997 and serving over 30,000 youth participants between the ages of 8 and 14 years. The USYVL operates community-based youth volleyball leagues in over 70 locations throughout the U.S. to provide boys and girls with the opportunity to learn and play volleyball in a “fun, safe and supervised environment.”
Rambis enjoyed a successful, 13-year NBA career that included four World Championships in 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988. He was promoted in the Los Angeles Lakers’ organization in September 2004 to the position of Vice President of Business and Basketball Integration after serving as an assistant coach for the past three seasons. He serves as an advisor to team owner, Dr. Jerry Buss, and consults on all business development matters concerning the NBA’s Lakers as well as the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. He previously served as an Assistant General Manager and the team’s interim Head Coach for part of the 1998-99 season. Rambis became aware of the USYVL when his children participated in the league and developed an immediate love for the sport of volleyball.

Footie should be
an Olympic sport in 2000
G'DAY, mate. What's a bison? Something to wash your face in. Sorry. I was just brushing up on my Australian. Now that the Centennial Games in Atlanta are over, I'm looking forward to the New Millennium Games in Sydney when it hosts the Olympics in the Year 2000. It also means farewell to the word, "repechage," which can be found in your daily newspaper only once every four years -during the Olympics. Repechage is French for a second chance. Well, I sure hope that there's no repechage for beach volleyball in the next Olympics. It was one of the sports added to the Atlanta Games, along with softball. But unlike softball, which provided a great story, beach volleyball only detracted from real volleyball. It got to the point where some of the media started referring to the latter as indoor volleyball. Give me a break. Knowing the Aussies - and with Sydney home to 30 beaches - it's very likely that beach volleyball might reappear again. I hope not. Instead, I wish the Aussies would opt for rugby, Australian Rules Football or even surfing. And I'm sure that if Greg Norman had any input, golf would be introduced. It's the closest that Greg will ever get to seeing his world tour happen. There was a restaurant ad in the paper the other day saying that "sushi rolling is not an Olympic event ... yet!"

Star-Bulletin For the Cal State Northridge athletic department, it was nearly as devastating as the earthquake that rocked the campus in January of 1994. Four men's sports . . . gone. Effective immediately. Volleyball, baseball, soccer the three most popular as well as swimming were eliminated Wednesday. Athletic director Paul Bubb's announcement sliced more than $500,000 in scholarships, salaries and operations costs from a budget estimated to be nearly $800,000 in the red. Nearly 80 roster spots for male athletes were eliminated, resulting in a male-female ratio more reflective of the student population, as mandated by a 1992 agreement with the California chapter of the National Organization for Women. The entire Cal State University system was sued by the state NOW chapter for allegedly violating provisions of Title IX, federal civil rights legislation that guarantees equal opportunity for female and male athletes. The Matadors men's volleyball team competed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation along with the University of Hawaii. CSUN's baseball team won two national championships in Division II and made the Division I playoffs five of the past seven years.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OLYMPIC SPORT OF VOLLEYBALL WAS BORN AT THE YMCA
Ingenuity, concern led to "less strenuous sport for businessmen"
CHICAGO, Sep. 1¾ In sports, as in other endeavors, necessity is often the mother of invention. So it was with one of today's most popular Olympic sports, volleyball. Like basketball before it, volleyball comes with an unusual story and, like basketball, it was invented at the YMCA, a charitable community service organization that has been at the forefront of community service for 150 years. In fact, at the urging of the YMCA in 1957, volleyball became an Olympic sport with the first Olympic volleyball matches played at the 1964 Tokyo games Volleyball - for businessmen only? In 1891, while the newly invented basketball was creating excitement at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Mass., another YMCA instructor, William Morgan, thought it "too strenuous for businessmen." He blended elements of basketball, tennis and handball into a new game he called "mintonette." The first game was played by middle-aged businessmen at Morgan's Holyoke, Mass., YMCA, in winter 1895. Morgan introduced the game using a borrowed tennis net raised to 6 feet, 6 inches - a head taller than the average man. The name "volley ball" was first used in 1896 to describe the back-and-forth manner in which the ball flew over the net. Soon the net was raised to increase the game's difficulty; its current standard height of 8 feet established in 1916.
