A YMCA physical education teacher, William G. Morgan, in his attempt to find an indoor team game with a minimal risk of injury, invented the sport of Volleyball in 1895, at the YMCA branch of Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA.  Its initial name was "Mintonette".  Within a short period of time, however, and after an exhibition game took place, it was renamed to Volleyball. Description The aim of both Volleyball and Beach Volleyball games is to pass the ball over the net so that it hits the ground on the opponent's court, while preventing the opposing team from doing the same. There are two Volleyball disciplines: Volleyball and Beach Volleyball. Volleyball competitions are held in indoor courts, by two teams of twelve, each with six players in the game and six on reserve. The competition area for each team measures 9 x 9 metres. Beach volleyball competitions are held in sandy courts, by two teams of two players each. The competition area for each team measures 8 x 8 metres.

There are two types of volleyball, the normal kind played indoors and the more glamorous beach volleyball played outside. Because of the (small) outfits the players wear they often attract headlines for how they look rather than how they play. That's a shame, because beach volleyball can be a thrilling sport to watch as it is very fast moving. Inside, each team has six players with another six on the sidelines. The idea is to get the ball from your side of the court, over a high net, without it touching the ground. It is allowed to be touched three times by a team, but must be hit over the net before a fourth touch or it hits the ground. In beach volleyball, whichever team forces the ball to hit the ground on the other side of the net wins the point. Now that this rule has been adopted indoors too, although in the past only the serving team was able to score points. Who are the British hopes?
There aren't any British volleyball players in Athens.

In when the sport made its Olympic debut at Atlanta, the competition was held at "Atlanta Beach," a man-made sand court that was located over 100 miles from a real coastline.
    Did You Know?
Because the weather can be a big factor in the outcome of a match, the teams switch sides of the court during a match after every five points.
In 2000, controversy arose when the sport's officials mandated that athletes wear skimpier outfits on the court. A recent rule change requires the female competitors to wear bikinis with tight tops and briefer briefs.
Beach volleyball first appeared in the early 1920s in Santa Monica, Calif., as a recreational sport for families.

Mr. Williams has taken the time to answer some questions about the state of women's beach volleyball, the problems around the WPVA and the future of the sport.

Dave, you are the executive director of WPVA. Much of what we have heard about the WPVA / Reece's Agent / Charlie Jackson has been from third parties. From the WPVA's point of view what really happened?

USA Women Qualify for 2000 Olympics
Part 1 Part 2
January 10th, 2000
By Rick Capone Lakeland, Florida (Jan 8, 2000) It came down to one match for the USA Women's National Volleyball team at the Nike Americas'
Volleyball Challenge, the NORCECA Women's Olympic Qualifier. Defeat the Canadian Women's National Team and they would qualify for the Olympics. Lose and, well, they didn't want to think about it. In a closely fought match at The Lakeland Center, in Lakeland, Florida, in front of a very supportive crowd, the USA defeated a very determined Canadian squad and qualified for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia later this year. L eading the w ay for the USA was middle blocker and tournament Most Valuable Player, Danielle Scott . Danielle had an impressive 10 kills, but more importantly, nine key blocks that knocked Canada out of rhythm and turned the match around for the USA in the second game.

Playing volleyball at the beach, which is not the same thing as playing modern beach volleyball, evidently began in Hawaii in 1915, when the Outrigger Beach and Canoe Club set up a court on Waikiki Beach. The main purpose of the club was to promote surfing, but when the waves weren't right, members often played volleyball while waiting for the surf to come up. One of the players was Duke Kahanamoku , the Olympic swimmer and surfing pioneer. Later, as athletic director at the Beach Club in Santa Monica, California, Kahanamoku helped turn beach volleyball from a leisurely activity into a fast-paced, athletic sport. During the early 1920s, college students began playing six-on-six volleyball on beaches in Southern California. A number of courts were built at public and private beaches, especially around Santa Monica. Two private clubs in Santa Monica, the Beach Club and the Swimming Club, began regular competition in 1924, playing every Sunday from July Fourth through Labor Day weekend. On public beaches, groups of families often played three-on-three or four-on-four games, depending on how many players were available.
