Whenever there is a major volcanic eruption in the world, you'll see a slew of newspaper articles and nightly news stories covering the catastrophe, all stressing a familiar set of words violent, raging, awesome. When faced with a spewing volcano, people today share many of the same feelings volcano-observers have had throughout human history: We are in awe of the destructive power of nature, and we are unsettled by the thought that a peaceful mountain can suddenly become an unstoppable destructive force! While scientists have cleared up much of the mystery surrounding volcanoes, our knowledge has not made volcanoes any less amazing. In this edition of

Justification for Inscription:
Report of the 21st Session of the Committee Brief description:
A vast area of primary tropical forest dominated by two spectacular extinct volcanoes, Kahuzi and Biega, the park has a diverse and abundant fauna. One of the last groups of mountain gorillas (consisting of only some 250 individuals) lives at between 2,100 and 2,400 m above sea-level. Threats to the Site:
Grave concern that portions of the park had been deforested and that hunting had been reported there, as well as war and civil strife ravaging the country, led the World Heritage Committee to inscribe the site on the List of World Heritage in Danger The site has been much affected by the influx of refugees. Park facilities had been looted and destroyed, and most of the park staff have fled the area. The park may also be serving as a hideout for large militia groups, as well as for illegal settlers. This has led to fires, increased poaching and the illegal removal and burning of timber. IUCN has received several pleas from the staff of the Park for international aid to rebuild both park-infrastructure and staff morale. State of Conservation Reports: Natural site datasheet from WCMC

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
This article is about volcanoes. For the action movie, see Volcano (movie) . For other meanings of the word eruption, see eruption (disambiguation)

A volcano is a geological landform (usually a mountain ) where magma (rock of the Earth's interior made molten or liquid by extremely high temperatures along with a reduction in pressure and/or the introduction of water or other volatiles) erupts through the surface of the planet . Although there are numerous volcanoes (some very active) on the solar system 's rocky planets and moons, on Earth at least, this phenomenon tends to occur near the boundaries of the continental plates . However, important exceptions exist in hotspot volcanoes Smoking Bromo and Semeru volcanoes on Java in Indonesia The name "volcano" originates from the name of Vulcan , a god of fire in Roman mythology . The study of volcanoes is called vulcanology (or volcanology in some spellings).

Most of the 600plus active volcanoes on Earth are associated with the boundaries Article Mountains of Fire Sidebar One volcanoes of North America

Mountains of Fire by Kathy Svitil No geological phenomenon assails our senses quite like a volcanic eruption. Stay close enough, and you can hear the explosion, see the fire fountaining, smell the gases, feel the ground tremble, taste the ash in your mouth. "I think that is why volcanoes are so cool to grade school kids," says Chris Nye, a volcanologist at the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage. "And scientifically, volcanoes are interesting because they bring you information about the interior of the planet, down to 60 miles or more, and help you study the evolution of the planets, on a human time scale. Mostly in geology you think of processes taking thousands or millions of years."
All volcanoes are born when hot magma rises to the surface, infiltrates a weak spot in the Earth's outer crust, and breaks through. Most of the 600-plus active volcanoes on Earth are associated with the boundaries of the tectonic plates, the seven great plates that carry the oceans and continents. They are especially common in subduction zones, which occur when one plate dips beneath another. As the plate dives into the mantle the layer of hot, flexible rock on which the plates glide it gradually is heated. That releases fluids which heat the overlying rock, producing blobs of molten rock that rise to the surface. The molten rock or magma collects in weak patches of crust, in structures called magma chambers. If the pressure in the magma chamber builds high enough, the magma will erupt. A volcano is born. Location: The Orosi Volcano is the first mountain you see when you drive into Costa Rica from Nicaragua.
Altitude: 1,487 meters (4,879 ft.) You will enjoy the drive. It's take you through the miles of farm and cattle land, made rich by the flow of minerals from the volcanoes. Keep your eyes on the mountainsides, you'll signs of old eruptions everywhere. You'll also find some nice jungle to look at and, in the western part of the forest, thousands of pre-Columbian petroglyphs. The northern wall of the volcano offers hikers a good view of Lake Nicaragua, miles to the north. People who will believe anything believe that Orosi takes its name from a priest who led a party of Indians to the mountain top where they were assaulted by a violent earthquake. "Aha!" said the priest. "The earthquake is sign. There must be silver here." From the depths of the volcano came a powerful, echoing voice replying, "Plata, no; oro, si." ("Silver no, Gold Yes.")
